Does cutting Parker send a message to the team?

Biteymax22 : 9/22/2015 1:10 pm
Going from starter to getting cut is hard to do in the NFL. I know that Parker has been exceptionally bad, but does this send a message to the rest of the team that if you don't produce you may be gone?

Sure.
Wish they'd send that same message

to Mark Ross and others in the front office.

Eric, you sound about as frustrated as anyone here right now.

The anger is just starting to wear off for me personally.

As far as Parker goes, I think they knew they made a mistake and corrected it. It still burns my ass that they couldn't see what even the casual fan saw this pre-season. James Jones deserved a roster spot.

Oh well, Thursday night will be here quickly. We can all hope for another Cousins performance against the Giants like last year. I suspect he has learned from that experience and this will be a much more difficult game.
Yes it does
DavidinBMNY : 9/22/2015 1:18 pm : link
But the move wasn't made for that reason alone.

Parker was on the roster for Cruz. Cruz is getting closer to playing. The DL is banged up and a body is needed.

Given other injuries / depth the choice was Darkwa or Parker.

It shows they really like Darkwa and have faith in Davis. Becky or Vereen My be very active in the slot this week.

any starter who thought their job was secure

is thinking again, so YES.

However, I don't know how cutting a 1st string WR can fix a defensive breakdown on 1st and 10 from Atlanta's own 10 yard line resulting in a 41 yard gain.

Dunno.

The team is 0-2 due to it's own failures.
Tom in NY : 9/22/2015 1:19 pm : link
The message would be worse by not doing anything (i.e. "Everything is fine, keep doing exactly the same thing.").

To be honest, I thought they would do this after Thursday's game, but I'm glad they are showing a higher level of urgency.

From my point of view, if they can get a win on Thursday it will help change the narrative for 10 days. Lose on Thursday, and the "Fire Coughlin" brigade will be out in full force as of 11:30 Thursday evening, and continuing thereafter.
Absolutely.
Matt M. : 9/22/2015 1:21 pm : link
As Dave pointed out, it is for other reasons also. And, I'm sure they wouldn't be making this move if they didn't think either Cruz will play and/or Davis can step up and do at least as much as Parker (not too difficult). But, part of the move is not just to open roster space, but also to put guys on notice. I remember back in 2000, I think, Bashir Levingston was cut after 1 or 2 weeks. He was not a guy who was going to contribute a ton, but it sent a message.

Parker had been a true front line player then the message would be stronger but he is not...he is a journeyman player who got a chance to perform when the regular was out and he did not.

In that sense, the message is clear...you'd better perform when you have the chance or else?

Still, the thing that irks me more than anything is the personnel evaluation that seems to be going on with the Giants. We've seen it before by keeping guys like Brewer around or Mosely and there have been others. At some point, and I know there are late bloomers, but at some point you know if a guy can play or not. To keep him around just because he was a draft pick, even possibly relatively high, makes no sense at all.

The Giants have done this with far too many guys...Sinorice Moss, Jernigan, Barden, the ones I mentioned above and perhaps even still with guys like Hosley.

If I were to be concerned about anything, that would be it.
What's the message?

Would this be news to anyone in the NFL?

Yes, the message is that the coaching staff is awake and that management is concerned.

The other message, which is far worse, is that they are still

If G Davis performs, that will be an indictment of Coughlin. Not good.
Should have cut Randle instead

If a 6th-round pick performs in game 3 of his rookie season, how will that be an indictment of Coughlin?

You could just as well argue that it shows what a great job he is doing, because he has an unheralded rookie up to speed so quickly.
I believe the sending a message thing this is overstated.

This is the NFL, Not For Long. If you don't perform you're toast. That's hardly news to any player.

Everything on this board is an indictment of Coughlin. If a bear shits in the woods and no one is present to observe it, Coughlin is to blame.
Here's what I don't understand
GruningsOnTheHill : 9/22/2015 6:10 pm : link
You have a guy who was a High School All-American, and then excelled at FSU under Bobby Bowden. Think of how many high school WRs there are; how many of those even make it to a Div I program, no less lead the team in receptions in their JR campaign? Though Parker was an UFA, how many guys from Div I even get a whiff of the NFL?

So how does a guy like Parker--still in his 20s--surpass thousands of prospective WRs during his football journey, and then drop six passes in just two games that the average HS player could catch? It's human nature to have a lapse in concentration (or whatever) every once in a while, but how do you account for a professional wide receiver allowing all those passes to carom off his hands and onto the ground?
I think a message was kind of sent to the team
illmatic : 9/22/2015 6:17 pm : link
when final cuts were made and fairly big name guys like Weatherford, Hynoski and McClain were all gone. Didn't seem to do much so I doubt Parker being cut will either. If we're lucky, it'll light a fire under a guy like Randle or Geremy Davis. Especially the latter. They need one or both of them to perform so hopefully it happens.

A "fringe player" who was in the starting lineup. And it's not like it was an emergency promotion. Cruz is coming off a catastrophic knee injury. Having a competent slot receiver to hold the fort sure would have been swell. Instead, we had a guy playing with oven mitts on.
This reminds me of a mid season cut a few years ago..
EricJ : 9/22/2015 6:34 pm : link
I really wish I could remember all of the details. Someone here will for sure. Things were not going well, so Coughlin cut a special teams player. We were all thinking "lol, way to go out on a limb sending a message by cutting a virtual nobody".

seems kinda harsh

I mean they could've just dropped Parker down the depth chart...but the roster spot explanation makes the most sense.

I would have preferred a benching, but I guess only fumblers go to the TC doghouse and drops gets you kicked to the curb. In the end, Parker wasn't helping us win and we're no less a contender than we were before. NEXT MAN UP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE!
If you've got a guy who's not putting out
Bill in UT : 9/22/2015 7:37 pm : link
and you cut him, you send a message to other guys not putting out and hopefully they'll start playing better. But if you have a guy who just sucks and cut him, do you think other guys who just suck are going to become better players? Your going to just make them play tight and make more mistakes. Sending a message can change attitude, it can't change talent. And I never heard any concerns that Parker was slacking off.
This is a bit comical though you have to admit...
Jimmy Googs : 9/22/2015 7:38 pm : link
And not because Parker didn't have a bit of a bulls-eye on his back for poor play as of late (because he did).

Moreso that our roster is so weak in terms of talent, that you can go from incumbent Starter to flat out Released in a week.

What did Graig Nettles say, "in one year he went from Cy Young to Sayonara"
Yep, I think that was his reference to Sparky Lyle.

During the Atlanta game, it seemed like the Giants only had two WRs on the field. If Randle is hurt, play someone who can move. If's he's not hurt, cut him.
yes it says if you're a player who doesn't deserve to be in the NFL

cutting Parker sends this message to me
Jersey55 : 9/23/2015 4:45 pm : link
certain people can screw up royally and cost the team games such as bad coaching decisions or QB brain farts and failing to call a time out to be sure of the right playcalling and nothing happens to those people but someone has to pay the price to seemingly appease the fans it will be a player lower in the pecking order like Parker. Not saying Parker did anything to help himself but the cast of culprits went much higher up the food chain than Parker...

Parker was sacrificed to apease the fans and the media to make a show that the team won't tolerate poor performances and if thats the case there were more poor performances in the first two games to warrant more sacrifices and that includes high dollar players and coaches...
