This team is in desperate need of a TE

The_Taxman : 9/25/2015 12:27 am
Nice win tonight even though we didn't play a great game the full 60 minutes. Eli and the run defense played well alpng with Randle and Odell. The special teams and pass rush were a train wreck and our TE play is abysmal. There is no excuse for the lack of talent at TE. There has to be someone out there that can give more than Donnell and Cunningham. Around the league teams have multiple threats at TE yet we barely have a #2 in Donnell and a PS player in Cunningham and a banged up #3 in Fells. I really hope we bring in a handful of TEs on Tuesday and pick one to hopefully contribute something to this offense as a blocker, receiver or red zone threat. Even with Cruz back we still need someone as a legit threat in tne middle of the field.
So That's Your Take Away From Tonight's Game?

Awesome!
Like LBs, TEs are not important

In Jerry world.
If the need is that desperate,
81_Great_Dane : 9/25/2015 12:32 am : link
why would they wait until Tuesday to bring guys in for tryouts? They played at home -- they could bring guys in on Saturday, even tomorrow, if they really want to.

Not my only take but one of them, yeah. So I guess you like our TE situation. Awesome!
Donnell scares the hell out of me.
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/25/2015 12:34 am : link
Fells would be my TE before Donnell.
Running back also a problem
Marty866b : 9/25/2015 12:35 am : link
Opponents have little problems stopping our run as we have no runner that they have to worry about the edges. Just straight ahead running plays off tackle or up the middle with no deception. i am happy we didn't run the stretch play tonight but how many carries went for less then 3 yards. Had to be about 80% of them. Jennings and Williams are both 2nd string runners.
He's right though
Sarasota-Phil : 9/25/2015 12:35 am : link
The tight ends were bad. It's hard to watch them knowing they probably wouldn't be the number 3 TE on any other roster.

Either way it was a good win. Hopefully they can get something going now. Hopefully Cruz, Flowers and DRC are ready next week. Back to back wins would be nice!

Donnell is an awful tight end. Just awful.

If the last two games are any indication, Alfred Morris's tenure in Washington looks like it's coming to an end. Sign me up, haven't had that type of workhorse in years
I like Morris
The_Taxman : 9/25/2015 12:43 am : link
But he's the same type of RB we already have. Bruiser up the middle hard type of runner. This team needs a guy who can run off tackle and stretch defenses with their speed.
Agree 100%.
drkenneth : 9/25/2015 12:44 am : link
Eli needs another WR/TE...Also agree that RB needs upgrade.
my least favorite play
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 9/25/2015 12:46 am : link
is that 2 yard pass in the flats to the TEs on 3rd and longs. Just a dangerous and ugly play.
I hope Cruz's return means less Donnell.
bceagle05 : 9/25/2015 12:51 am : link
Right now the staff probably feels they need all the weapons they can find in the passing game.

slightly better than Preston Parker imo. and it's close

Yeah, I really do not grasp the sense of running that play. We don't have that kind of athlete at the TE position.
RB
stretch234 : 9/25/2015 6:15 am : link
The team had a guy perfect for this offense until he broke his neck

As for TE - Donnell is open every time he is in the pattern. Defenses do not hit TE off the line. He is not a good blocker - see 95% of TE

Just hold onto the ball and he is fine for this offense.

When Cruz comes back you will have 3 WR and the RB's who can catch. Donnell will still be open
Are you ready to trade your number one pick
Shadow : 9/25/2015 6:22 am : link
For Graham. They will fill in the TE and linebackers next year.
2016-2017 is the window for this team.
Donnell's got size and athletic abiliity,
Ira : 9/25/2015 6:49 am : link
but he's very mistake prone and he can't block.

blueblood'11 : 9/25/2015 7:04 am : link
Are you an ass or what. Like many here I agree. The tightend position is shaky at best. All he was doing was making an observation on the situation and the fact Jerry Reese continues to ignore the fact that position is more in vogue again then it had been for a few years when the tightends weren't as prevalent as they are now. And a lot of it has to do with Belchick.
We
AcidTest : 9/25/2015 7:42 am : link
basically have no TEs. Fells is a slow, aging, veteran, Donnell is a marginal blocker at best, who drops to many passes, and fumblers. Cunningham is a second year UDFA who is unproven. It's incredible this is the situation.
Fells has played fairly well
bc4life : 9/25/2015 7:42 am : link
up to this point. Donnell's blocking is not good but last night's drop was uncharacteristic. Cunningham is still learning.

We want a TE who can catch but he can't block - everyone bitches.

There are not 5 TE's in the league who do both.

Reed on Wash can't block, Anyone see Ertz trying to block last Sunday, how about Fleener and D. Allen. The next guy J. Graham hits will be his 1st, same for J. Thomas.

It is easier to find a LT than it is a TE that can do both
there's degrees of bad blocking
area junc : 9/25/2015 8:16 am : link
Donnell is one of the worst blockers I've seen. He is terrified of contact and that extends to when he's catching the ball.
Gotta laugh about this.....
Doomster : 9/25/2015 8:21 am : link
We are going to have tryouts, and find someone better than Donnell....I'm sure there are at least a baker's dozen out there......sarcasm/off....

Yes, Donnell is not the answer, but you are not going to get anything off the street, that is better....
We would have to due a trade somewhere at this point
USAF NYG Fan : 9/25/2015 8:36 am : link
to get a competent TE now. True that it's even harder to find someone that can catch and block. Problem is that Donnell can't seem to do either.

Why does the man keep leaving his feet? He jumps for catches when he doesn't need to. What the hell was that somersault for? He slips and almost cost an interception. Dropped 2 more catches. Shades of Parker.

Well okay, fine, but most of those guys do the running, catching and scoring things much better than our TE's do.
Fells > Donnell
arcarsenal : 9/25/2015 9:59 am : link
LD is such a dopey player. Everything he does is awkward. He leaves his feet every time he gets tackled and either tumbles or loses the football when he hits the ground. He has terrible hands. I don't know why he even gets as many opportunities as he does. He's bad.
Not a Donnell fan
giantsfan227B : 9/25/2015 10:00 am : link
Would rather see Fells. Coughlin though is adamant that the TE be a good blocker. Not sure who ends up better in that dept.

I think that's a very good takeaway, actually.

We did very well with the short passing game last night with our wide receivers, but we could've had them pose more of a deep threat of our tight ends sucked up defenders in the 10-20 yard range.

I don't think your negative comments are wrong, but I disagree with your overarching idea that he's bad. I'm very disappointed to see he doesn't seem to have improved those awkward aspects of his game at all, but there's no doubt he's big, strong and does a good job finding soft spots in zone defense. He can also out muscle a defender for a ball in man-to-man coverage.

If he doesn't fix the bad parts of his game that you alluded to, I agree on going with Fells.. but the ceiling is higher with Donnell, IMO.

last night really such a train wreck? I saw Cousins pressured fairly often in the 2nd half. He was running for his life on a few plays. PFF recorded 20 hurries yesterday, an improvement over 6 hurries last week against ATL.

The impending FA TE I would pursue
Emil : 9/25/2015 11:56 am : link
is the Dwayne Allen. 6'3" 265, good blocker, good hands, can play that FB/TE role MacAdoo wants.

That's harsh. How can u say special teams were abysmal when you make every FG, block a punt, and give them bad starting positions all night? Yes, I recall the return but the game was over by then. Also, Fells is not the #3 TE. No reason to call him a moron. That's amateurish

Boss and Ballard were fairly mediocre athletes who could catch and block. They just were not fast.

The last TE we had that could run, catch and block was Shockey. He was also not a good blocker when he came into the league but he improved a lot in this over the few years he was here. Blocking can be taught and coached.

3 plays at TE stood out
Torrag : 9/25/2015 10:54 pm : link
Eli throws a poor pass behind Fells that he makes an incredible catch on. Eli then throws a worse pass to a wide open Donnell that goes incomplete. Eli then throws a nice ball to Donnell who appeared to want to jump for some reason as the ball appeared and dropped an easy gainer. On a night when Eli played good ball hitting the TE wasn't his strongest area.

Yeah Martellus Bennet never played here? I guess anyway we finally figured out the Adrien Robinson just didn't have IT, and blaming and dumping Pope was a mistake, finally.

What makes you think they see firing Pope as a mistake?
I am saying I see it.

Not "they."

Pope developed no-namers left and right, not to mention Bennet who was a "fail" with the Cowboys.
Donnell plays football but is not a football player
Stupendamatic : 9/26/2015 6:11 am : link
He can make a crazy catch for a touchdown but can't seem to run with the ball in his hands without either fumbling or falling forward. Is he top heavy? I don't get it.

Pope was not on board with McAdoo's offense. Had to go.

Giants haven't invested anything at all in the position since he left though. Donnell and Cunningham both undrafted FAs and Fells came to us after sitting out a whole season when he was one of the Patriots' last cuts.
Still not sure why they didn't make a play for Scott Chandler.

Exactly. We've been trying the Antonio Gates method- find a great athlete and see if you can turn him into a great TE. People forget that Donnell was tied for 9th in receptions by a TE last season. So far this season, he's tied for 5th.

We screwed up letting Bennett walk, granted, but let's not act like Donnell was a disaster last season. He was a project- uninvited to the Combine and signed as a UDFA- as a receiving tight end.
One thing I don't get
ThreePoints : 9/26/2015 8:15 am : link
How can NFL coaches not teach a TE how to block? How is that not part of your job description as a TE? Shouldn't guys come into the league thinking, "OK, I need to improve my blocking."
and enough with Fells

made a good catch on Thursday but is a career mediocrity who is now 32. I am sure the team gritted its teeth and kept him but no happily. His only virtue on a rebuilding team is that it won't cost much to cut him.

That may be his only value beyond this season, but the focus should be on his ability to help us win games in the present.

He's a competent veteran presence. That's where his value comes from.

Donnell (despite the buffoonery) is #5 in the league in TE receptions? Guess that's why he's our starter and where his value comes from...
