He left his feet and almost went into a deliberate summersault...BEFORE contact by the defensive player. Why cant he stay on his feet after the catch?? This seems to contribute to his fumbling problems.

What in the hell was that? Can he see the future?
Well, he clearly saw the hit coming. The flip was just his misguided attempt to protect himself and the ball.
I think he's so concerned about not fucking up that he reflexively does something nutty.

I didn't understand that either ...he sorta went into a pinwheel before any contact. I was like WTF was that?
There was a play in preseason (I think it was very soon after Donnell first got on the field) where he got flipped after a catch, as happened a number of times in 2014. When he got to the sidelines, TC was talking to him and putting his hands out palms down, obviously saying "You've got to stay on the ground."
So the lesson he took from that was . . . next time I'll jump in the air and do a flip before I even get hit.
Crazy.
We definitely need to address tight end in the off-season.
Donnell catching a pass one day and rolling down the field doing one somersault after the next for about ten to yards into the enzone untouched for a touchdown. It's the damndest thing with this guy.
Truth be told. I miss Mark Bavaro. And Kevin Boss. And even the kid from Ohio state who blew out his knee then the Pats picked him up when the Gaints waived him.
I think Jerry Reese is still operating on the assumption he'll stumble across a diamond in the rough. But all he keeps coming up with are plain old rocks.
against Washington, and for one brief moment, it looked like the Giants had solved their TE problem...it just goes to show you, anyone can have that one game in their career, that is a positive aberration...
After that he did nothing....he looks awkward out there...he doesn't look confident....and every time a play involves him, you hold your breath...He just looks too gangly and is not top heavy, to be a good blocker...and obviously, from some plays on the field, he doesn't know the play...
Cunningham looks built more as a blocker....whether that translates to the field, well just have to see....hopefully that knee is not too bad...
It was pretty obvious he thought the defender would go low at his knees,as DB's usually do when a 260 pounder has a head of steem. It's called anticipation.
and he'll also do some bone-headed things. His athleticism is obvious, but refinement is crucial.
With all of the ither issues on the team I really doubt we'll spend premium resources on this position. Boss was a 4th rounder, Ballard and Donnell undrafted, and Bennett a 1-year-prove-it guy (who we should've kept.)

Same thing I was thinking. Seems like he's afraid to get hit low.
we hired him to play TE for us. just like preston parker, he's continuously demonstrated a very low skill level and we keep him out there. i'm done being mad at him. This is on Reese/TC.
I've always been for letting him develop due to his athleticism
I'm quickly reaching the point where I'm done with him. He can't block a lick and he can't catch a cold. Fells isn't the athlete he is, but he's a much better blocker and at least holds on to the football. Donnell's nickname should be "drive killer".
I don't get why people think he's a rare athletic specimen. Even when he's not flipping, his speed is average at best and he looks like an uncoordinated OL running down the field. Being "athletic" usually means you don't trip over your own feet at least once a game.

I think a lot of it has to do with the acrobatic catches that he made last year. His leaping ability is pretty nice for a TE. But I'm not sure how much this will by him time before he's given the ax.

I don't think people realize how big he is.
He's 6'6 270. Having even average speed at that size IS an athletic feat. He also clearly has pretty good vertical leap.

TTH - you are right ... I didn't realize he was that big. Put him at DE (couldn't be worse than what we have),
Here's my question though .... because he is that big and fast (for a TE) - does anybody think the Giants are trying to force the issue with Donnell. He is big and obviously a gifted athlete (doesn't make him a great football player) .... I'm wondering if the Giants Org. are trying will him into a player.
LD hasn't played much football, he doesn't have great football instincts or really know how to protect himself (or the football) when live bullets are flying. Defenders are always aiming for his lower legs, so he tried to evade.
He obviously always wanted to be a tumbler but had to settle for NFL
Were on any other team, I don't think he would sniff the playing field. There's nothing about him, that screams, NFL starter!! Parker gets cut, but he remains a starter. He can't block, can't catch, and can't hold onto the ball. He's just not good... Out of all the TE's, Eli had to play with, he's by far, the worse one.
He has this weird tendency to leave his feet every time a defender tries to hit him below the waist. I know you don't want to get hit in the leg when you're planted but he's just so dopey.

"I caught it! Now, don't fumble, don't fumble, don't fumb--HOLY SHIT SOMERSAULT!!!!!"

Maybe he was gymnast in a previous life ... but, that play left me a bit confused. There was no contact and he was spinning like a top.
flip-donnell show - ( New Window )
runs through and drags 'em. - ( New Window )

No reason to jump there.
He is weird.
Yeah Baby
The Giants Win

He dragged them 20 yards. I want a TE like that too.
