Special Teams

It is unbelievable to be saying this, but Quin is finally earning his keep. First off, through 3 games our coverage of both punts and kickoffs has been very good outside that one return last night. Our return game has been solid with Harris. Wing is doing a very nice job.

But, most important to me was the blocked punt. They obviously saw something there and put in a play. I don't believe Jennings is normally on the field for punts. So, credit needs to go to the coaching staff as much as him for that great individual play.

coverage has impressed me most
amazing what solid specials players will do to make a coach look good
GMenLTS : 9/25/2015 11:57 am : link
Also, all the complaining about trading a 7th rounder for wing sounds might fucking stupid right about now.

He looks like an all pro out there.
1 return TD allowed in 3 games

isn't exactly good. But outside of that play, they've been good. The punt coverage team especially.

I wouldn't go that far. The ATL was definitely better and got way more hang time on his punts. Wing has excelled at pinning them inside the 20 though.

Seriously thought a hold should have been called
BTW is this any indicator that our back end players are
Joey from GlenCove : 9/25/2015 12:01 pm : link
actually getting better?

Idk if you can draw that conclusion
When is the last time
lester : 9/25/2015 12:09 pm : link
a Giant had a return for a TD (Wilson for a kickoff i think) especially on a punt. I think it may have been Hixon but cant recall.
Is Randle really the right guy...
BamaBlue : 9/25/2015 12:11 pm : link
for the hands-team? He made two boners last night -- luckily neither of them cost a possession.

He's a WR, so he better be. Harris is the deep man and I believe Beckham had the "weak" side of the field.
brown
giantfan2000 : 9/25/2015 12:24 pm : link
the short kickoffs toward the end of game were killers for us
I thought the 2nd kick
AP in Halfmoon : 9/25/2015 12:27 pm : link
was over Randle's head. I would call that an error
short kickoffs
giants#1 : 9/25/2015 12:33 pm : link
I think they are done because Brown's leg isn't strong enough to consistently get them out of the end zone (unlike Bosher with ATL who was kicking them out by 10 yards). And when he does attempt to go for the TBs, it's usually much more of a line drive kick so if he only ends up getting it 8-9 yards deep, teams are going to return it with a full head of steam.

These mortar kicks are supposed to be shorter (few yards into the endzone) but with much more hang time allowing the cover unit to get down the field. They've actually worked really well for the most part this year and they've done a good job making plays inside the 20. Unfortunately, they blew the coverage once last night and we saw the result.
They might want to think about their
Enoch : 9/25/2015 12:33 pm : link
formations for Onsides defense, after the two close calls last night. Maybe have more than one guy in the "try to field the kick" position in case the first misses?

The KO return stunk, but we can hope that the team won't keep making the same mistakes that they make late in an early-season game played on 3 days' rest.
The first one was a misplay on Randle's part.
Enoch : 9/25/2015 12:35 pm : link
No reason not to just let that roll out-of-bounds.

The second one was a really good kick.
ST's went in the same direction as the defense,
Doomster : 9/25/2015 12:53 pm : link
in the fourth quarter.....punt return and two onside kicks that weren't fielded cleanly.....in fact, lucky to get both....

Hopefully, just a blip on the radar....

But damn, they made an easy win, look close...
Sorry, my bad,
Doomster : 9/25/2015 12:54 pm : link
it was a kickoff return, not a punt return...
Someone is getting better obviously.
jsuds : 9/25/2015 1:03 pm : link
IMO Harris has a lot to do with it. I expect him to make some big plays for us this year.
ST should be a strength of the team this year
aquidneck : 9/25/2015 1:04 pm : link
We invested heavily in ST in the off-season. Reese and company got a lot if crtitism for bringing in second tier rolevolayer types like Casillas and Thomas. Harris' acquisition was critisized as too expensive for a KR because his role on offense wasn't likely to be more than that of a specialty player. For whatever reason people consistently dismiss his role on the KO and punt defense teams.

Our ST should be a team strength this year.
Quinn has not been the issue
djstat : 9/25/2015 1:21 pm : link
The players have been awful and in some cases a revolving door. NYG made a commitment and brought in special teams type contributers (Harris etc)
With the investment the team has put into STs, if they weren't good,
Devon : 9/25/2015 1:27 pm : link
then Quinn would be in the running for WOAT.

Between signing guys to decent contracts just for STs to keeping players who offer little outside of STs on the roster to playing starters on STs, there's not likely a team that's going as all in on that unit right now as the Giants have decided to.

This just not true. For several years they have signed or drafted guys specifically with returns in mind. Only Wilson ever did anything above average.
You guys there in person,
Randy in CT : 9/25/2015 1:30 pm : link
is Wing kicking it through the roof? He seems to be hitting them high.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 9/25/2015 1:33 pm : link
1) Primarily, it was the blocked punt that made me praise Quinn. that was likely the result of film work and putting that specific player in a position to make a play.

2) The second onside kick was an excellent kick by the Redskins PK. Randle should not have touched the first one.
Jennings
AndyB : 9/25/2015 1:52 pm : link
Rashad Jennings has been on the field in every punt return situation for the Giants this season.

He lines up as the end man in the box, left or right, in a three point, right-handed stance with his head up.

Through film study, the Giants appear to be targeting the "weaker" of the two wings in the punt protection scheme. Last night, it was the Redskins' number 59, Terrance Plummer. Jennings drove Plummer right into the block point, about two feet in front of the punter's foot.

For the Redskins next (and last) punt, Plummer was replaced on the wing by number 89, Derek Carrier.

and pin them inside the 20 is amazing. Weatherford hasn't done that for years. Incredible upgrade.
One wonder if Weatherford was aware just how good
CT Charlie : 9/25/2015 2:23 pm : link
Wing was. It may have made Weatherford's exit slightly easier to swallow.
I thought the Skins were getting a little too close on Wings punts
Simms11 : 9/25/2015 3:08 pm : link
for my comfort. They were not blocked too well, but Wing got the ball off pretty quickly too.

Very Feagles like.
Weatherford was great pinning opponents inside the 20m his first year
Matt M. : 9/26/2015 5:37 pm : link
After that most punts seemed to go out of the end zone on a shorter field.

Defenses usually appear to get close to the punter. He didn't look to be in danger of having most punts blocked.

Thanks. I didn't realize Jennings was one for each PR. But, he was not the end man on either of those 2 punts. He came up the middle. It was reminiscent of a few years ago when they put JPP (?) up the middle on a punt because they saw something to take advantage of.
