WashPost: Are the Giants the team to beat in NFC East?

Gross Blau Oberst : 9/25/2015 2:49 pm
Following up on their article from last week (Don't Laugh, the Redskins can win the NFC East), today the Washington Post flips the coin and says, maybe the Giants are the team to win the NFC East.

I would rather the press discounted the Giants, and the team played with a chip on their shoulder, than to receive the faint praise of the press.

One game at a time
Talk is cheap
Finish!

Are the Giants the team to beat? - ( New Window )
Not a massive stretch if they can get healthy
JonC : 9/25/2015 2:50 pm : link
Dallas injuries and Chip Kelly's ego have opened the door.

The Bills game will be a better barometer.

Let's see Dallas lose one first
wigs in nyc : 9/25/2015 2:59 pm : link
whattaya think?
The Eagles are better than they've shown.
Mike in Long Beach : 9/25/2015 3:00 pm : link
Dallas was the best team but there's just no way they'll be as good without Romo and Bryant (and that's stating the obvious of course).

Washington is a disaster.

Are we the team to beat? No. Can we win the division? I'd say our odds are as good as any other team in the division.
It's less ridiculous than I would have thought a couple of weeks ago
Greg from LI : 9/25/2015 3:01 pm : link
Thought that says more about the weakness of the division than about the Giants
not really
Giantfan in skinland : 9/25/2015 3:03 pm : link
AFC East is lightyears ahead of the nfc east to my eyes. Any of Miami, buffalo, jets, or obviously pats would like the favorites in my eyes if they were in the nfc.
Team to beat? No. Team in contention for best of the worst? Yes.
Victor in CT : 9/25/2015 3:06 pm : link
Don't confuse "chance to win a shit division" with "legitimate contender".

NFC East has gone through more serious injuries.

Regardless, we'll see.
Defintely the team to beat
weeg in the bronx : 9/25/2015 3:09 pm : link
We beat ourselves the first two weeks. That's correctable. We have enough talent in a weak division. stay healthy, win this week (no short order) and all is well.
when you consider we could (if not should) be 3-0,
Del Shofner : 9/25/2015 3:09 pm : link
it's not crazy to consider us a contender. Agree that "team to beat" is a little too strong, though.

The headline is pretty specific. It said team to beat in the NFC East, not the NFL in general. And they have a pretty legit shot with how injured and/or bad the rest of the division is.

Not Miami - did you watch them play the Skins? They're still terrible.

The Jets? Ehhh....they look pretty good thus far but they've only played the Browns and a Colts team that looks to be in total disarray. There's a cap on how good you can be with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB even if the receivers are high quality.
In the end...
RC02XX : 9/25/2015 3:16 pm : link
All that matters is that the Giants make it to the playoffs by winning a weak division...and I'll take that. Once in the playoffs, everyone has a chance. Let's just focus on winning this shit division first.
Hopefully the Giants won't be reading all this positive press
Simms11 : 9/25/2015 3:21 pm : link
and will be chomping at the bit to get back to 500 against the Bills, which will not be easy either. That D is the real deal too.
Eagles offense is a mess
JonC : 9/25/2015 3:23 pm : link
Bradford looks lost and it's all mis-matched parts right now. Their defense has promise but won't hold up over the long haul if the offense blows.
What a difference a day makes

agreed. That's a very tough game to handicap. the Bills can be real dangerous, but also aren't any kind of elite team. Will be interesting to see because a very different Giants team should take the field than took it last night with a number of the walking wounded back. If we can move the ball on them we can win but that will be a tough environment and Rex is a very good defensive mind.

Truest words of the day around here.

Looking forward to it.
yeah, Eagles should get it going
MetsAreBack : 9/25/2015 3:31 pm : link
and if Dallas can hang around until Romo gets back (I'm guessing he only misses 6-7 games)...

Which is to say like the NFC South last year ... somebody;s going to win it at close to 8-8. There's no one team to beat here.

The Eagles have shown lousy. What makes them better? because they lit it up in the pre season and no one schemed them? They have ride themselves of all their proven play makers.
I've said it from well before the season
Matt M. : 9/25/2015 4:18 pm : link
There is no team to beat in this division. It is a mediocre division, which anyone can win. I think as few as 9 wins may even be enough. There is no odds on favorite in my opinion, and that is before Dallas got bit by the injury bug.
First and foremost
Carl in CT : 9/25/2015 4:28 pm : link
Dallas is the team. Dallas is also beating Atlanta this week for all of you that are writing them off. We can all hope but their still the best.
If ever there was a season
steve in ky : 9/25/2015 4:33 pm : link
where the division was wide open this would probably be it.

The Giants one large advantage they have a franchise QB and a head coach who have done it before multiple times. It's nice to have Super Bowl winning experience and knowing what it takes.
If Philly Is Really As Bad As They've Looked ...
Trainmaster : 9/25/2015 4:34 pm : link
the Romo, Bryant, Witten and Gregory injuries have may have opened a door (small door, slightly opened) to allow the Giants to climb back into the the NFC East race.

I think only the NFC East division winner makes the playoffs. Hopefully, the aforementioned injuries can hand Dallas 2 to 4 more losses than they would have otherwise been handed.

No.
Randy in CT : 9/25/2015 4:46 pm : link
But we've shown that we're not that bad in a struggling division. Continue to improve and get healthy and we might make the post season.
And still, let's see the Giants finally beat a philly team
micky : 9/25/2015 4:48 pm : link
plus even with all the injuries the Cowboys have, Giants still don't matchup well vs Dallas OL and that is a factor

The Bills are much better than the Redskins, and we have had trouble with mobile QBs like Taylor.
We have a shot
River Mike : 9/25/2015 5:01 pm : link
in this division. I think we'll get better as the season goes on, both with more experience together and getting some key guys back healthy. In the end we're pretty much a mediocre team with some explosive offense potential that will continue to be inconsistent, and such a team can win the NFC East. The only glaring weakness we have, that is well below mediocre, is lack of pass rush ability, and there's nobody on the horizon to change that.

Perry Fewell had problems with mobile quarterbacks.
I have NO EXCUSES on the injury front to date,
Big Blue '56 : 9/25/2015 5:22 pm : link
as we are pretty much on par with most teams around the league..Dallas and Philly seem to be incurring injuries as we did in '13 and '14..That is very good to see for a change(I don't celebrate injuries to any player save for Mike Vick)..Very good

I see the Bills game as I did with last years 1st game against the Eagles. I think we were 3-2 at the time the Eagles took the Giants to the woodshed.

Good barometer indeed.

The Giants are the best 3 quarter team..
BamaBlue : 9/25/2015 5:31 pm : link
in the NFCE. It's finishing games that seems to be the problem. They Giants (especially the defense) have unraveled in the 4t quarter of each of the 3 games so far...
I think some of the reaction after Washington's game last week
Upstate_Giants_fan : 9/25/2015 5:36 pm : link
overlooked the letdown factor for the Rams after their big victory over Seattle.

As Eric said, Buffalo (especially the D) will be a better barometer.

Love to see the GIants beat them by more than the Pats did ;)

It could be argued that they didn't unravel last night, rather they kept things in front of them to eat up as much time as possible, no?
As of right now, we have the best QB and coaching staff
ArlingtonMike : 9/26/2015 10:47 am : link
If Cruz comes back strong, we'll have the strongest receivers.

Let's get DRC, OO, and EF healthy and we can really make some noise. Not to mention the return of Beatty.

Hey, they are making things interesting and football is fun again. And I got to poke fun at the Redskins fans today by wearing my Giants gear. So let's enjoy for the next 10 days

that the team is unhappy with the 4th quarter of the Washington game.

There is enough bad play in the win for the Giants not to let it go to their heads.

I think Fitzpatrick is 11-3 in September..It's the balance of the season where he flucks up..

I don't know that it is a given that we have the best coaching staff. Dallas has a very good staff. It's their talent that I believe is overrated. I think Coughlin is still the best HC in the division, but the entire staff is open.

I'd take TC over Garrett any day of the week. Coordinators are a toss up.
