Thoughts on the schedule and looking ahead

T-Bone : 9/25/2015 2:51 pm
Maybe it's just me but I REALLY like the schedule for the rest of the season and can easily see this team losing only 1 or 2 games the rest of the season if the team can stay somewhat healthy. After the Bills game this Sunday, the only other team that I really don't see the team as having a chance of winning would be NE (and that's at home and so I can see us possibly beating them as well).

But look at the rest of the schedule and pick out a team after NE that 'scares' you?

S.F.? - they travel cross country and are not the same team they were a few years ago or even last year.

Phi.? - only if they get their act together offensively.

Dal.? - I can see us beating them at home, especially without Romo and Dez.

@N.O. and @TB? - yeah right. Both team will be picking high in next years draft and the Saints home-field hasn't been an advantage in years.

The four game stretch of Jets, @Mia, Carolina and @Minny are all very winnable games with the Jets and Miami games most likely being the toughest.

I don't know guys... I see no more than two more losses likely and would be pretty surprised if it's more than three. That would give us an 11-5 record and that should be good enough for at least a wild card spot... if not the division title.

Even during the two heartbreaking losses I was at least happy that the team was WINNING both games going into the 4th quarter and it took the Giants giving the games away in order for both teams to come back and beat them. This team will continue to improve over the course of the season as we get players back (not just Cruz but guys like OO, Flowers and Beatty)... guys get more and more comfortable with the defensive system... and the team as a whole begins to gel. I'm beginning to get very excited about this season... again, provided we have good health.

Good post, T-bone

Personally, I've found the Giants are always infuriating. They play up to teams and down to teams, so projections usually fail. Remember the mind-blowing loss to Washington in the Superbowl year in week 14 or so? So, while your point is well put, I find it very hard to project anything with real security.
Your entire post was good

with the exception of the 1st sentence, which is absolutely insane.

I hear ya Moon and that exact thought crossed my mind while I was typing that post. It's only a three game sample though but it appears to me that this team is getting better and better each week and I'm hoping that they continue to keep improving and not take any major steps back. But I'm in complete agreement with you that it'd be just like this team to lose to both N.O. and Tampa somehow.
We own Kirk Cousins
Mike in Long Beach : 9/25/2015 2:59 pm : link
There is no reason in any universe to be talking about "1 or 2 losses the rest of the year." For 3 straight seasons now the Giants have eaten shitty quarterbacks for breakfast and have been schooled any time they've faced a good one.

Yesterday's win, while fun and encouraging, has done absolutely nothing to prove that trend is going to end.

LOL! How can you like my entire post but think the first sentence was 'insane'? What's insane about it? That the team may only lose two or three more games the rest of the season? Yeah... kind of hard to believe right now... and maybe not even all that likely... but I don't think it's impossible to even consider.
The Giants have the QB edge in many games this season

They don't face Rogers, Peyton, Luck, Ben, Rivers, etc. Only a few games do the Giants face really good QB's.

Well then it appears you actually DON'T agree with my entire post.

We'll see. I know this post is gonna make a lot of eyes roll... but I'm really starting to like the look of this team and if we can somehow generate more of a pass rush, I really like our chances.
I honestly expected the Giants to start off 3-3...
okiegiant : 9/25/2015 3:02 pm : link
and then maybe go on a little run and make a little noise.

I still think they'll be 3-3 after 6, but they're going to have to beat a team I didn't expect(maybe Philly or Buffalo?)and they lost to a team I didn't expect(I had Atlanta as a win).

You just never know...

I purposely didn't include your qualifier about staying healthy because that goes for every team. There is absolutely no way the Giants only lose 2 games the rest of the season. To suggest that is worth calling you out on. Sorry.

This is partly why the only team, besides NE, that really worries me would be the Eagles if they get their act together. Other than that, there are few teams on the schedule who's QB is THAT much better than the won we just faced last night.

Yes a top WR and QB, BUT THAT IS NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH to get this team to 11 wins. if we get to 11 wins we r winning the super bowl!! Again... you're looking at the team as it stands RIGHT NOW. I'm looking at a team that I believe will improve and get better as it gels and, more importantly, as critical players return (like Cruz, Beatty, Flowers and maybe JPP). I've been here long enough to know how these type of posts get received and because of that I thought about not even wasting my time. But for one of the few times this season it's a slow day for me here and while looking over the rest of the schedule I really started thinking to myself 'Hmmm... we could have ourselves a nice lil season here if we continue improving like we seem to do...'.

is the schedule is in the Giants favor this year.

They play a lot of bad teams with bad QB's and don't have a lot of travel. Shoot, they even got a break this week by being home on a short week where they were beat up a little bit. Now you face the Bills(short trip)and have extra days to get healthy.

The big picture is the Giants are playing hard and are possibly getting a little healthy(DRC, maybe Flowers/Cruz back). The division also sucks(and the Cowboys are dropping like flies).

Anything can happen.

Thank you okie! I could be... matter of fact, I probably AM... 100% wrong about my optimism. I can admit that. It was hard for me to type what I typed above because I'm rarely the type to look ahead and do believe in the 'one game at a time' mantra. But I can't help but look at the rest of the schedule and think that things actually look to be setting up for the team very nicely over the next few months. I mean... even the Bye is in a great spot as we play NE at home... have the Bye... then take the train to Wash....and then have a home game against the Jets. We then travel to Miami in late Nov./early Dec (always good for a team who's built to pass) and then go to Minny (probably the toughest road game of the year after the Bills game).

I just really like how this schedule it looking so far. I know it's not popular to think positively about this team lately... but I do.

LOL! It wasn't just the game (although I knew that's how my thread was going to be perceived). Like I said, I was pretty confident that we'd possibly have a good team even after the two losses because we were winning by double digits in both games going into the 4th quarter and it took us giving the game away (particular the Dallas game... where so many things had to go their way in order for them to pull out that win) in order for us to lose.

I knew I was putting myself out there with this thread and it was going to get some of the responses it's gotten so far. But I don't care! I'm really liking this team and am excited to see where it goes.

I agree with T-Bone
Matt M. : 9/25/2015 4:16 pm : link
I had the same thoughts earlier in the week looking at the schedule. Realistically, I don't expect them to lose only 1 or 2 more games. But, I also don't expect them to lose more than 4 more. They honestly should beat at least half of their remaining opponents and could be most of the remainder. I'm sure there will be another game or two that they should have/could have won that ends up being a loss. but, they also are capable of winning just about every game.
i agree T
Les in TO : 9/25/2015 4:22 pm : link
when I posted yesterday that I didn't think an 0-3 start was fatal, notwithstanding the very long odds as the stat showed during the game last night, part of the reason was that I am not scared about the schedule for the season.

the wild card is health. right now it looks like we are getting cruz and DRC back, beason will have another week of practice under his belt to shake off the rust, and hopefully flowers can get back into action.

starting with next week - buffalo has a typical rex team - hard nosed attacking defense with a running focused attack. but their QB is tyrod taylor. not exctly jim Kelly during his prime.
Buffalo is a good test
Matt M. : 9/25/2015 4:26 pm : link
primarily because of their D. It will be a physical game. The real key is if our D stops the run. If they make Buffalo one dimensional, the Giants should really win that game. The Giants also need to not turn the ball over. I honestly think a fairly clean game by the Giants should beat Buffalo.

I said it before the season and hold to it still. The Giants should win 9-10 games. That should be enough to contend for the division.

Depends on the continued development of the hungry young players who are playing every down hard. Our coaching staff is the best it has ever been IMO.

The division is definitely doable...
i've got zero expectations

but that really is a soft schedule
Let's get back to 500 first......

then we can start looking at the schedule with some more enthusiasm. The Bills will be a handful and probably have the best Dline in the sport. If you thought our running was woeful this past week, next weeks game will probably look even worse. Bills are also at home. It will be a very difficult game for us and so let's see if we can climb this ladder one rung at a time, because 1-3 starts become a steeper climb IMO. Need to keep improving. 1 step forward and 2 back won't cut it. I know one game gives renewed enthusiasm, but I want to see how they do first in Buffalo before trying to figure out their record based on the rest of the schedule.
The Giants are a work in progress

still have to prove they can even beat philly or Dallas. Which I feel Philly will get their act together and Giants vs Dallas OL, no matter what, is the difference maker as proven.

Just improve each week and hopefully they can a few more games before seasons end.
can win a few more games

I thought I was an optimist picking 8-10 wins this year.

I do think our schedule is light, especially with Romo out in our next meeting - but recall that a far superior Giants team lost to Dallas with Jon Kitna starting in 2010.

I think there's a lot of mediocrity in the league and particularly on our schedule. With the better QB in most of these match ups, the Giants should come out ahead in some of them. A lot of coin flip games. But this roster just isn't that good for me to think going 11-2 from here is possible. I'd take the under on ten wins. I don't think the Eagles are going to continue being this bad, either.

Even with strong rosters, TC's Giants have had a few clunkers each season.
The only way I'll become a believer is

If the NYG win in Buffalo next week, SF the week after, and most importantly: the MNF'er week 6 in Philly. Sadly, I think we only win the home game vs the Niners in that stretch. 2-4 heading into: Dallas, @ Saints, @ Bucs, Pats isn't going to get it done. We'd be looking at 4-6 after 10.

one more thing, my friend. I'm not one to give much parenting advice, but this short clip taught me a lot about raising a young boy. Consider it.

There really are some miserable people. I will never tell anyone how to be a fan, but some people can't seem to find anything positive.

I couldn't function this way, but to each his own.
a lot of great people over the years

too many miserable populate this place that ruin being a Giant fan for me.
schedule is lacking upper echelon QBs

and that fact makes every game very winnable given we have an 'elite' eli!!! but since the giants have many other issues that won't be resolved this year, the odds are that they mess up a handful of games themselves.

so yes, we could only lose 2 or 3 more games, but more likely will finish with 6-8 losses.
Until this team proves it can beat Philly

there's no reason to believe they can contend for a wild card spot.

either Giants start winning some of these Dallas and Eagle games otherwise everything else is moot.

In that the schedule moving forward is not overwhelming. An I also dont think a loss to the Bill next weekend would be a disaster. The games they need to start winning are the divisional matchups against Philly and Dallas. You usually are not going anywhere if your divisional record is 2-4.
