Cooley would easily be the #1 TE. However, there is a reason he isn't playing. He is 1 hit away from never playing again and is looking at a high probability of long term effects from too many concussions.
has to be a stunt to motivate the other te's and players on the team. no way we sign a guy who's been out of the league for what - like 3 years? no way.
hurt to bring him in for a look given the performance of our TEs so far.
I wouldn't expect much given that the DC team would've likely kept him if they thought he had anything left in the tank (considering his history with the team) but that organization has blown it on all sorts of stuff so you never know.
LOL!!! IKR! But we def need someone else at TE here... I personally would like Fauria. I understand he has trouble at separating from defenders but he's a big body and know how to make plays.Def worth a look.
fact that we would even bring Cooley in proves how poor our TEs have been. Cooley's last season was 2012, and even that was just eight games. He's had knee and ankle problems, as well as at least one concussion in the NFL, and three in college.
You mean the Giants are tired of Donnell fighting for extra yards Â

I think he would take Cunningham's spot actually.Fells is the most consistent we have and Donnell def did enough this past season to warrant to rope this year.
I think Fells is better than Donnell. He's a better blocker Â

Most likely due diligence.Typical Tuesday..As for knees, ankles and concussion, he's had 3 years to heal/recover..
think Donnell's swan dive somersault really put a sour taste in Coughlin's mouth.
At least last year, most, if not all, of his aerial tactics were either in the act of catching the ball or evading a defender. The somersault on Thursday made absolutely no sense. He caught the ball cleanly and turned up field with no defender immediately in front of him. There was no reason at all to make that move.
I was at small get together at one of the Redskins coaches homes and Chris Cooley was there. He told us he had been working out like crazy and trying to get into a camp but didn't think it would happen. (Arizona came the closest to bringing him in.) He said he figured he would catch on a team that was a contender late in the season that could use a veteran number 2/3.
FWIW he appears to be in great shape. He's really been working his butt off. And he's cool as hell and very personable. Could be a nice addition to the locker room.
RE: You mean the Giants are tired of Donnell fighting for extra yards Â
LOL... yeah I have never seen a TE somersault before contact, ever. The guy is clearly hesitant to be hit/tackled. It's too bad if he would put his head down and punish tacklers he would be a pretty damn good pass catcher. And probably a better blocker.
He also said that he can not join with the Redskins due to some rule established by the league awhile back. Said since he's employed by them in a reporting/news capacity the league won't allow it. Sounded odd but that's what he said. Something to do with teams being able to pay guys unofficially until they need them.
who were on here saying that Bennett was getting too much money and wasn't worth it?
Well I wasn't one of those nice folks, I was said to see him go... however I would be very much lying if I said I didn't think we would have a comparable TE by now.
TE/H-back type player to the 53 (not saying Cooley specifically) dont be surprised if a Defensive Lineman is cut to make room. Ellis could see his second stint come to an end before it really gets going. The coaching staff is serious about using Whitlock on both sides of the football so in essence a signing such as Cooley makes a defensive player expendable. Just a thought.
And likely has some gas left in the tank.
I just remember the guy getting open in the middle of the field and catching the ball...but alas I thought bringing in Herman Moore was going to work.
He's a very talented player, and he's hungry to get another chance. He's also completely healed from his past injuries, according to his press releases, so why not give him a shot? He's 33 years old, so he's not over the hill.
he shies away from it and puts the team at a disadvantage. Whether it's as a ball carrier or blocker. He's skittish when he carries the ball and as an in-line blocker he has absolutely no instincts or feel for the play.
He's the guy in the film room who yes-yesses the coach, watches the film ad nausea, and STILL makes the same mistake over and over again. I just KNOW his PC shakes his head when he watches him play. Crazyness.
It's disappointing because I really root for the guy. Small school kid, good athleticism, seems to work hard but he makes a lot of weird and correctable mistakes for a starting TE on a team in a do-or-die situation.
a good receiver through 3 games. Watching easy passes hit him in between the numbers like last Thursday on 3rd down that would have kept a red zone series alive are incredibly frustrating. This position needs upgrading

He may be terrible, but I read here on bbi that he(s currently #5 in the league in te receptions.
In a passing league, in 2014 there were only 9 TE who had more catches than Donnell.
In 2015 there are 12 TE's with more catches than him. This including the following: J. Reed, J. Graham, G. Olsen, E. Ebron, T. Eifert, C. Clay & J. Cook who struggle blocking a stationary sled.
Like most NFL TE he cant block. He is however, open all the time, and the QB throws to him.
You are not just going to find better out of the blue. Who the hell did Cooley block when he played
It's not like he hasn't shown promise , Donnell could always figure it out again. I think he needs confidence booster and that's why he's still on the team
He has shown flashes this year just not consistency
I mentioned this on a thread over the weekend. Cooley can catch, runs great routes, knows football, but can't block worth a lick. Still a positive addition to this team that drops way too many easy balls.
Cooley, 33, has not played since 2012. Back in the summer, he admitted he was “literally begging’’ his former team, the Redskins, to re-sign him. Cooley co-hosts a Washington, D.C.-based radio show and also does radio work for Redskins broadcasts. He was in the press box at MetLife Stadium for Thursday night’s Giants-Redskins game.

Donnell is open because of the system he plays in, not because of any discernible talent.
He is also 25th in yards for TEs this year.
Three games this year doesn't entirely negate all of last year. Â
He hasn't played well, obviously, and they're right to look for alternatives, but it's silly to re-write history and say he was never good when they got 60 catches and 600 yards out of him last season at nearly 10 yards a catch.
He's clearly a wr in a tight ends body. Remember Ramses? Tell Donnell to shed about 20-30 pounds make him a wr and that's it. He cannot block and that experiment is over. He had some nice blocks but the inconsistency is killing this team. My hope is Cunningham makes an appearance and shows us what he has, if not, time to search this offseason
about how Donnell was improving his skills of protecting the ball and particularly not leaving his feet when running after the catch? I recall the article spoke of how the coaches were all over him to refrain from doing this.
I think he has done it in each of these first 3 games...
A desperate move by a GM and coach who have to win.
The fact that all Reese could provide at TE to start training camp was a 4th round athlete who never did a thing in college (or the pros), a former QB from Grambling (and not from the Eddie Robinson glory years either), a veteran castoff who is their best all around TE and a rookie from a DII school (no disrespect as I played for a DII team that plays Southern Conn State each year) is alarming to say the least. Not 1 legit NFL player in the group. So now Cooley is the answer?
At this rate, they might as well try to bring in Mark Bavaro or even Bob Tucker.
think Donnell's swan dive somersault really put a sour taste in Coughlin's mouth.
He just tripped on his ... chinstrap?
I am not crazy about Donnell, he looks really clumsy, and looked even more inept on that play, but, to be fair, I think what happened there is he saw the contact coming and dove.
He wanted to keep both hands on the ball and hug it to his trunk (given his fumbling issues last year) and also instinctively lowered his head to absorb the contact which resulted in the somersault.
I wouldn't expect much given that the DC team would've likely kept him if they thought he had anything left in the tank (considering his history with the team) but that organization has blown it on all sorts of stuff so you never know.

In his case, they'll see if he has anything left in the tank and place him on speed dial
I think he would take Cunningham's spot actually.Fells is the most consistent we have and Donnell def did enough this past season to warrant to rope this year.

Donnell btw, is going nowhere
Another Reese missed signing !
Besides, he couldn't be worse than what we have at the position.
They are trying to get younger, with a few key veteran leaders. 33 year olds that have been out of the league for several years need not apply.
Or DE, which is where he really belonged.
It is like trying to motivate a piece of dog shit into being a diamond.
FWIW he appears to be in great shape. He's really been working his butt off. And he's cool as hell and very personable. Could be a nice addition to the locker room.

Why is Danny Kannell coming to town?
Well I wasn't one of those nice folks, I was said to see him go... however I would be very much lying if I said I didn't think we would have a comparable TE by now.
Ummm, yes?
I just remember the guy getting open in the middle of the field and catching the ball...but alas I thought bringing in Herman Moore was going to work.
Pretty common motivational tactic - if it's not this, then I'd actually be worried.
Do you not remember when the Giants signed ancient Brandon Stokely because Cruz dropped some passes?
Yes he isn't a great in line blocker. He was used more like an H Back as Eric said.
Split him wide.
He's the guy in the film room who yes-yesses the coach, watches the film ad nausea, and STILL makes the same mistake over and over again. I just KNOW his PC shakes his head when he watches him play. Crazyness.

Cooley - due diligence but highly doubtful
Every TE on the roster right now would at best be a #3 TE on every other team.
Hate watching us squander the last 3 or 4 years with Eli at the helm because our front office is just incompetent.
He may be terrible, but I read here on bbi that he(s currently #5 in the league in te receptions.
I'll be here all week, ladies and gentlemen
This sucks. He should be able to catch and put the ball away & block decent by now.

Not so much - ( New Window )
Bennett 2012 - ( New Window )
lol..that was beyond bizzare! Did he think he was going into the end zone? I would love to see somebody ask him why he did that...
I think he has done it in each of these first 3 games...

That's easy. Because they keep confusing it with the LB position ...
