Isn't it within the Giants rights to pull the tender if they don't want to deal with any BS from JPP and his agent and they still feel he is not ready?
Even if they don't pull the tender and he signs it can't they still put him on NFI?
I see no place where JPP has leverage. The Giants hold all the power in this.
is what they're trying to position for here leak by leak, that is create a shred to file a grievance with the player's union. That's it.
Sounds about right..Not a Lawyer, but if this ever got to court, I could hear the Judge saying, "wait a minute, you recklessly blew up your hand, endangered others and you want what?"
union files grievance and pushes to get the case in front of a judge or arbitrator for a ruling.
JPP "only" earned about $15M of his rookie contract, off the top of my head, so if they can somehow create an award in the $5-7.5M ballpark, it's a win for his camp.
They're trying to set precedent and timeline and get it on paper, feeding leaks to the media just helps create the public record in this situation. A paper trail, as it were.
You guys completely overstate the risk of a grievence

Pretty sure internet reports are not admissible evidence that an arbitrator would even consider. Even if they were, the fact that JPP hasn't signed his tender makes it a moot point as the Giants can't do anything to block him from getting paid until he does.
just whatever is being compiled behind the scenes that can be used in legal proceedings, the leaks usually have some design to them, even if it's to nudge public opinion, or nudge the team to compromise, etc.
I'm no lawyer but common sense tells me NYG doesn't have much to fear here. But, it is plain JPP's camp is flailing to try and create something to extract some money for their camp and go without pay in 2015.
I don't see what JPP is doing as some underhanded shenanigans
The Giants would love to have JPP back and rushing the passer and helping them win games. What they don't want is someone on the sideline, getting paid 1 million a game, cheering the team on in street clothes.
This have been talked about before, but if JPP had included the Giants in on this whole situation from the get go, signed his tender, reported to camp on Day 1, learned the system, etc... He still wouldn't be playing(on the 6 week NFI List), but does anyone think the Giants wouldn't be paying him from game 1 out of good will? That's their option, that's the kind of things they do, and that's the kind of organization they are. Do the right thing.
But JPP played the whole thing stupid from July 4th and here we are. He has lost any benefit of the doubt, and as far as I can see will now only get a paycheck if he is on the field. At this point, the Giants want a player not a shadow and if they don't get it it's IMHO Bu-Bye.
I don't think the Giants would have paid him the full tender

Always good to see you Stan..Been quite awhile..Anywho, Well stated imv
they wouldn't have paid him from Game 1. JPP offered to report for exactly that and NYG shot it down, otherwise it would've happened.
But, if he had done all the right things, showed up and worked his ass off, if he could take the field in Week 7, NYG would've paid him the ten game checks he'd be eligible for. Imo.

Jon, do you think(we'll never know of course) had JPP let the Giants in on things from the get-go, they might have paid him from game 1 (in Stan's scenario)?

between whatever he earns and the $15M tender, which will probably be at least half of the tender (which is the equivalent of 1/3 the value of his $20M rookie contract ... not exactly peanuts).
I do think the Giants would have been accommodating to JPP (that doesn't meant they'd pay him the full year, but likely more than JPP would have earned on the field) had he been more upfront. JPP approached this with a combative nature from the jump, and now he finds himself in the unenviable position of needing sympathy and leeway and will only get the contractual minimum.
And this is more of the same from JPP. Anyone who thinks the Giants are in on this have to be nuts - if there was any chance the Giants wanted to have JPP join the team in two weeks, do you think it'd be leaked this way? The Giants would be out in front announcing it. Instead, Coughlin gets asked at a fundraiser, and he says point blank he has no idea. More JPP maneuvering.

Ho so? We both agree that he would never have earned the full $15mm no matter how he played it.

The Giants did announce it, back in September. It was reported then that they would revisit in October. Now its October and he is coming back in for an eval. This isn't maneuvering. Its stating facts.
but that the amount he will ultimately earn (if more than zero) was compromised by his poor judgement.
Assuming you mean his poor judgement after blowing off his finger, that is yet to be proven. If he starts earning full game checks on or before week 7 he then he played it right.
I missed an announcement where the Giants stated he's coming back?
Link it please - all I saw was where JPP turned up and they said they both agreed he's not ready yet, and they'll discuss again later.
As for him playing it right if he gets half the season - that implies there's no chance the Giants would have paid him for rehab time. We'll never know - but JPP's team never gave the Giants the chance. Knowing their past history of paying guys to rehab (Chad Jones, the offer to Steve Smith knowing he'd be on the bench year 1 and possibly never able to play again), he overplayed his hand.
if not more than he earned in the single season with the Eagles. He was being paid for the first year, with the Giants medical staff telling him he likely wouldn't play. He didn't like that news, and opted for the Eagles, where he got onto the field sooner and was quickly done. Not only would he have made more money, there's a chance he would have prolonged his career.
And the point with Jones wasn't how much, but the fact that the Giants paid him when they didn't need to. The Giants have historically been pro player in these instances, with numerous examples. JPP turned down top flight medical care in an attempt to hide the severity of his injury, and likely cost himself both from a medical and a financial perspective.
He's really giving the middle finger to the folks who said he wouldn't be fired up to play again. When he's blowing up ball carriers and exploding into QBs again he can thumb his nose at the haters. I think he'd rather be skinned alive then never be able to fire off the ball again. Once that fuse is lit it's pretty hard to extinguish it.
Simply sublime. You win the Internet for the day :)
extremely fairly. Even generously. If Steve Smith had listened to their advice his career might have had some longevity. Chad Jones was paid and medically taken care of far beyond their contractual obligations to do so. These are facts not in dispute.
That said to suggest JPP got lesser medical attention because he didn't use the Giants resources isn't fair nor likely accurate. He handled this situation poorly in many regards but he's a young man with an experienced sports agent and the resources to get the care he needed.
If the folks above (who mentioned a mal-practice suit) have a legit concern ... I wouldn't let him in the stadium if I were the Giants.
If you aren't going to rescind the tag you have no choice but to let him in and sign the tender. You can then nfi him if you think he can't play and go through the grievance process if it happens.
Giants have not rescinded the tag. They will let him in and they will let him play if they think he is capable.
RE: Saying jpp turned down top flight medical care
After seeing JPP's hand at the beginning of Sept, there were some reports that some of their medical people wanted to stay far away and see how healing continued letting the doctors in FL continue to guide.
Giants never announced JPP would return in six weeks
That's misleading and a bit disingenuous. They let it be known JPP would return in six weeks for a second round of exams, which would be in roughly two weeks from now.

Unbelievable ... all this because of 4th of July fireworks. I can't believe it came to this (can't believe the whole thing happened - first of all) .... I am NOT pissed at JPP but, it might be wise for the Giants to just let him go. Even if we were on some kind of run to the SB (we are not) ... he rendered him self useless. It is a shame - for both sides.
And I don't see what's confusing about this situation.
The situation is fucked, both sides are dealing with it, but long term, all both sides want is for him to be productive on the field ASAP.
Giants saw his hand, weren't very pleased, said come back in mid October for an exam. He's coming back a little early for an exam than planned. I'd think this is a good thing as compared to the status quo.
I don't see where the contract manuveuring is other than JPP wanting to play sooner than the Giants do, because the team wants him to be somewhat worth his salary (considering they can roll the space over).
so this is pretty much just an issue of when both sides will agree JPP can play. I'm sure there's something the Giants could do to make JPP assume risk to protect themselves from culpability if they['re that worried about that whole aspect, but I doubt it will come to that.
I have no idea when he'll come back. My random guess is that if the team still refuses to play him, they'll tell him to come back week 10.
We need a pass rush. We aren't paying him. It costs nothing to keep him around until the Giants feel like playing him (and paying him).
People seem to be making this way deeper than it is.

How do these leaks provide any leverage at all? I dont get it.
Are they going to go to the arbitrater and say "Its on the internet, it must be true!"

is this in response to one of my posts?
Put out a couple of work out videos?
Letting it be known that he will be visiting the team, even once admitting that he is not yet ready to go.
This is not some machiavellian effort here, this is status quo in the twitter age
He has never once stated or implied that the Giants have done anything wrong
I just don't see that happening.

I don't think so
ron, I did say if he were able to take the field in Week 7. I'd agree he blew any chance he had for NYG to show an adundance of goodwill towards him.
To be honest, the Giants probably prefer that he has remained unsigned all this time. It has afforded them much more flexibility.

Nice post Stan and good to see you.
B in ALB... a masterpiece.
If that happened, the Giants could be on the hook for knowingly sending him on the field just to win games.
There is just too much risk to the Giants to bring him back this season, in my layman's opinion.
That said to suggest JPP got lesser medical attention because he didn't use the Giants resources isn't fair nor likely accurate. He handled this situation poorly in many regards but he's a young man with an experienced sports agent and the resources to get the care he needed.
