Nikita Whitlock...Our Aaron Donald

Anakim : 10/4/2015 8:18 pm
Maybe not, but he is absolutely fantastic and is similar to Donald as they are both undersized guys, who beat the odds. Sadly and astonishingly, he was the only D-Lineman who had consistent pressure on the QB. He's already shown much more than pass-rushing DT Jay Bromley.

Simply put, he needs to play more on defense. I want to see him in there on third downs.
I think the Giants look to get him into the game in the 4th Quarter
Simms11 : 10/4/2015 8:22 pm : link
because he gives them fresh legs in the pass rush and the oline is probably a little gassed by then. It gives him an advantage. He'd get engulfed by linemen earlier in the game.

Absolutely crossed my mind watching the game today
I too

Love the hustle that this kid is bringing. They even mentioned it in the commentary during the game as soon as he got the sack on Taylor towards the end of the game. This guy might not have the size, but he does have hart and he just loves to play. Now if we can have all 52 other guys on the team leave it all on the field like Whitlock.

weird thing is he has hardly practiced at all with the defense.

Agreed. I've thought about the Donald comparison.
Not the fulltime DT like Donald but
Watson : 10/4/2015 8:29 pm : link
does Donald play 3 way like Whitlock? Whitlock is impressive in his own way.

He's making it count. Don't forget, he recorded 18.5 sacks in a tough ACC. He's no slouch.
5'10" ... yikes.

Got plenty of hustle though - love the guy.
He's probably a better defensive player

than offensive.
according to nfldraftscout

Whitlock is a stronger dude. 43 reps at 225, almost a Mitch Petrus feat
Ms.Traina posted this summer
fame56 : 10/4/2015 8:41 pm : link
that Whitlock absolutely must make the final 53, (along with someone else that I forget at the moment)..

she was spot on with that assessment..this has the potential to be one of the most interesting storylines of this NFL season

wonder how Dallas and Cincinnati feel knowing they cast this guy off
Don't think u want
LauderdaleMatty : 10/4/2015 8:41 pm : link
A guy at 255 in on run downs no matter how tough or big his heart his. That being said the kid looks good at both FB and DT. Nice find.
The Bills got 55 yards or so rushing.
Lurts : 10/4/2015 8:43 pm : link
The DTs did their jobs. Spags is using him as a Q4 quick pass rusher, but I imagine he would be ground down in the run game.

This is a good point. I think the more snaps he gets he could get exposed, but he's been super impressive and could continue to be a nice fit in specific packages.

why is that weird? JPP has arguably gotten worse the more he's practiced with the defense.

I thought the same thing today but also think it's a great weapon to have. You have an o-line that's been battling with our stout DTs all game and at the end of the game, they have to try to block a 5'10 Tasmanian devil. What a nice wrinkle for our defense.
As much as Donald is undersized
Gmen4Life21 : 10/4/2015 9:15 pm : link
He's still got at least 30 pounds (probably more) on Whitlock, and he's over 6 feet tall, Whitlock might be 5'10. I mean he's much smaller than Donald was as a rookie. Also Donald had 9 sacks last year, he had a huge year, I think he won defensive rookie of the year or something. To me the comparison is very faint - but it's an interesting observation.

He's a situational pass rusher. I think his responsibilities are limited to get to the QB. I wouldn't be surprised to see some draw plays right at him.
I love him
Mark from Jersey : 10/4/2015 9:31 pm : link
great player. Constant hustle. Hope he gets 6 sacks a year for the next 8-10 years!

Probably would be, but put him in on third down pass plays and you may have something here.
hustle
area junc : 10/4/2015 10:55 pm : link
not only is he a good pass rusher, he's also good to have on the field late because he flies to the ball like rudy and limits YAC. guys relentless
It will be interesting to see
Jay on the Island : 10/4/2015 11:20 pm : link
what the team does with Whitlock. Will they ask him to put on weight and have him focus on ST and DT? Obviously at his size he would never be a full time DT but as a situational pass rusher he could be very valuable. Another great find by Jerry Reese.

He's fine as a situational pass-rusher at his current weight.
Speaking from experience
B in ALB : 10/4/2015 11:22 pm : link
offensive linemen lose technique as the game enters the final stages of the game. He's actually a really good fit as butts and legs get tired. I like it.
Whitlock
Marty866b : 10/5/2015 12:02 am : link
Is a natural pass rusher from the interior. I think the Giants are going to use him more in that role. He gets some pressure on every play even when double teamed.
Two guys in the NFL play
NJGiantFan84 : 10/5/2015 1:07 am : link
Both ways regularly. JJ Watt and Nikita Whitlock. And JJ doesnt play specials.

I love watching him play. For all of the personnel decisions that were criticized this year, this was a great move.
Not sure
NYGinNC : 10/5/2015 8:54 am : link
how many times I need to tell you guys this, but I watched almost every single snap of his college career, and he is just as good against the run as he is against the pass. He can get under and to the side of the bigger Olineman trying to drive him. Again, look at his actual college production levels and accolades, they blow away all of the other DLs on the team and in most cases were against better competition.

All that can be true, and he's just not going to be put in there full time because he's vastly undersized for this level.
No to full time play
Greg from LI : 10/5/2015 9:08 am : link
But I think they should start putting him in on third and long throughout the game, not just in the fourth quarter. The Giants simply don't have anyone else who gets heat on the QB the way Whitlock does.

Find some videos on him--he routinely took on and beat 2 guys at once in college.

This guy isn't "Rudy". All heart and limited athletics. He's short and strong and talented.
You can't directly compare his production vs college offensive

As a specialist in a defined role. Which is very different from suggesting that he can be a complete DT, any maybe even play a larger number of snaps.

Well the rest of the Dline could stop that draw because they are all just standing at the line of scrimmage. If you can't get a push on pass rush, you better stop the draw and or screen!
