JPP, Beatty, Cruz, Fells, Ayers

CMicks3110 : 10/5/2015 9:21 am
This team looked pretty good yesterday. I expect to get all 5 of these players back in the next few weeks, Yes, even JPP - who I think will be surprisingly effective - he has a LOT to prove, a LOT of money on the line. I know part of his hand is mangled, but I really don't think its going to be that that huge of a detriment to him. Players play with clubs on their hands and are not that much less effective. I think he can be decent, and he has to be pretty super motivated.

Our weaknesses appear to be pass rush, inside receiver, tight end, and probably defending the intermediate passing game - which would be helped by pass rush. So I think we can actually do something here this season. I kind of hope Jerry does make a trade for a Martellus Bennett type, I think it would do a lot for our offense. But I feel very good about this team, especially with these players coming back.

JPP is not coming back.

Cruz may not be coming back either.

Agree.
I think we can hope that

Ayers, Fells, Beatty, to contribute soon. To a bit lesser extent Cruz, and then who knows about JPP at this point?

Just getting back
BillT : 10/5/2015 9:24 am : link
Ayers and Fells would be enough. I'm not completely pessimistic about Cruz. I think he could be back after the bye.
Fells and Beatty would be a great boost.
Victor in CT : 10/5/2015 9:25 am : link
I really don't like Donnell. Weak player. Fells can block and he can stay on his feet when he gets the ball.

That's your opinion. Not a fact. You have no idea whether he's coming or not.

Beatty back as well, would boost the run game in my opinion.
JPP won't be JPP so it doesn't matter
jvm52106 : 10/5/2015 9:30 am : link
whether you think he will be back or not. Beatty is one addition I think people are downplaying the significance of. He would give this line a much better pass protecting unit and allow Marshall to be a swing guy or BIG TE in running downs. Beatty's addition is big.

Ayers and Fells will solidify things at two positions.

With the way a lot of people on the site look to your words as gospel, you really ought to shy away from such declarations when you really just don't know.
Agree about Cruz and JPP
averagejoe : 10/5/2015 9:31 am : link
not coming back. Don't hold your breath. Sure wish Giants could trade for a vet WR. Maybe Hartline from Browns? There has to be some WR available. Randle is not dependable and Giants can't afford to be thin there.
JPP's not coming back?
Beezer : 10/5/2015 9:31 am : link

Interesting.
What does Hartline give you that Harris doesn't?
Beezer : 10/5/2015 9:33 am : link
I'd rather continue with the use of Vereen, and if we were going to trade, we trade for a TE.

That said, the Giants aren't trading for a TE.

Welker still a conversation this week?
I certainly hope

JPP and Cruz come back and can play by game 8 -- but it's possible that they won't - I don't know how anyone can be sure of either outcome

I know that you've felt all along, with regards to JPP,that this is setting up to be legal battle between the Giants' doctors and JPP's doctors. I understand your point there. The Giants' are holding the tag on him so that they can retain him under the franchise tag next year, placing him on the NFI this year, at which point they can decide whether or not he is capable of playing football. You've also outlined that JPPs camps action are creating a paper trail to prove that he is capable of playing, thus creating the basis for his argument at a potential grievance hearing. So, I get where you are coming from with your thoughts. However, the Giants' have plenty of cap space this year and next, are already saving money on each game he misses, and if this season has a shot to go anywhere, I think JPP can play a pivotal role. From the Giants' point view - Why not take a gamble $7 million gamble on a premiere pass rusher and see what they have? If he plays well, then great, then you know how to value him next off-season. If he plays poorly, then you can say, alright, he's not the same player and move on. But to move the decision to next year, without having seen him play, also has issues, cause then you are devoting another $14 million in franchise tag money towards a complete unknown. Why not know?
We'd be better off scouring the CFL for a DE

than playing JPP this year, or ever again for that matter.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that this defense looks better since he hasn't been on it.

Of course it's my opinion, but I don't think it is that far off.

Cruz was out from August 17 to September 30 with a calf issue that he just re-injured. If he sits out a similar amount of time, we're talking mid-November before he attempts another comeback. The Giants trainers have already demonstrated an inability to properly handle calf injuries (Berhe's multiple premature comeback attempts and eventual surgery and now Cruz's setback).

Regarding JPP, he blew all or parts of 2-3 fingers, fractured his thumb, and had skin grafts on his arms and hand. Pardon me for not being terribly optimistic there.

Too many variables to point the finger (no pun!) at JPP on this one. New defensive additions, new DC.

I think JPP of old would make a great addition to this team, unfortunately, we can't get that guy back. I'm with Eric, we don't see JPP in blue this year, and more than likely ever again.

before you get too giddy about Cruz's recent injection, read what he said about the somewhat controversial platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. He basically said the trainers said "it might not help, but it wouldn't hurt". In other words, it sounded like they were a bit at a loss and decided to at least try it.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chao said the PRP will keep him out 2-6 weeks.

you may be right. You may be wrong. Just saying you're stating an educated guess not a fact.
re: JPP
JonC : 10/5/2015 9:44 am : link
We just have no idea if he can actually play professional football in 2015. Pushing and pulling weight sleds doesn't demonstrate that ability, and the medical pro's have been consistent in stating the time required for the skin grafts to heal was going to create major obstacles for him to play in 2015. Cruz's latest setback is not a good sign when you consider how long he's already been out. It looks like he's going to miss half this season or more.

Ayers, Beatty, and Fells should return on time, and are needed.
i'm not expecting cruz back for a while
CMicks3110 : 10/5/2015 9:44 am : link
but i don think he'll play this season. And if it's only downt he stretch, and we can remain in the hunt until then, well, we all know what can happen when a team gets hot.

wrong about Fells, too bad. MBennett even more of a possibility. I say trade a conditional 5th.

coming back.....

Cruz may be back, but the guy coming back will not be the Cruz we expect....

Would like to see another receiver picked up....when Harris gets nicked, he can't play ST's....

Beatty? How long to get into football shape? And where do you play him? LT or RT?

Hard to believe that we miss Fells....that's the state of our TE situation...

Ayers is a situational pass rusher....yes, we need him...hopefully he will be ready....

Good to see OO and Moore out there.....we need to know what these guys can do, instead of speculating about it...
Just not going to know how effective JPP can be

They did see JPP a few weeks ago. They told him to go home.
With Beatty, the devil is in the details
Bob in Newburgh : 10/5/2015 10:13 am : link
I do not believe he improves the RT position. Probably you gain some pass protection, lose some run blocking.

He probably improves the LT position, so the question is whether rookie Flowers (playing only LT a few years now) can make a seamless transition to RT.

Some lineman have trouble shifting sides, others do not.

Fells was a nice player
Vanzetti : 10/5/2015 11:14 am : link
but one man's injury is another man's opportunity.

Tye and Cunningham have more upside as receivers than Fells.
Fells is most likely done we found out early this morning:

Cruz is now likely to be out a while. Fells, prior to this thread being started, was a possible Ir candidate thanks to unexpected surgery. JPP is nowhere near ready to come back. Are people really taking unfounded reports, likely put out by his agent, that he is ready seriously. On Friday Coughlin put those to rest saying there is no new news about JPP.
