From Big Blue View and PFF, Ereck Flowers did not give up a single pressure against Jerry Hughes. Hughes is one of the best pass rushers in the league and Flowers used a variety of methods to stop him (overpowering him when he attempted bull rushes, taking him far to the outside when he went outside, and combining with Pugh to stop a couple of swim moves). Eli was only sacked once yesterday and Flowers returning to the game after the first play and toughing it out on an ankle injury was a huge part of it. This guy is a literal giant and a stud LT already.
giants nailed this pick when all the experts were all over the board in terms of LTs this year (and all over as to whether or not flowers could even play LT)...
I wonder if Beatty will ever really fit back in. IMO, he's always played a bit soft. Maybe it's no coincidence our line has improved this season without him (And enough time to prepare without him).
You may be right. Early but it sure looks like it
And did we really want the Iowa tackle who is playing guard with Wash. instead of Flowers?
Someday someone will write a book and we'll find out.
I know we are paying him a lot, but that doesn't seem to matter at this point so much as making the line dominant.
Agree with JC. Flowers should never be removed from LT except for injury reasons. (Knocks wood)
As big as Flowers, 6'6 315, is Ogden would dwarf him.
Not the smoothest guy in his movements which is why so many here think he's more RT than LT, but he looks more than capable of being a long-term LT.
As for Flowers, yes, it looks like the Giants hit on a good pick here!
He is certainly looking like a bona-fide great pick by Reese & Co. Love the playing hurt stuff too..
But he just went up against one of the best pass rushers in the league, with a gimpy ankle, and totally shut him down. That's an elite LT performance for a vet, never mind a rookie on one bum leg.
Excuse me, Beatty's been on scholarship? He was our best OL last year, get a clue.

would only make the line better. Not throwing a parade for Newhouse merely being okay thus far. They can stand to run the ball better.
WTF?! How does moving a very good, only to get better, LT in the middle of the season for someone who probably is not any better going to make the OL better?
You get as good or better pass protection on the left, and a certified powerhouse run blocker on the right, that's how.
If he was struggling, I could see a temporary move to ORT..I cannot see TC moving him out of OLT..This is in no way a "veteran assumes his old job," as he would never move a franchise piece(unless really struggling) to make way for an established vet who is not as good, imv..
Bringing O'Hara back to replace a Boothe(who seemed to be doing well) is not the same thing..Boothe was never a franchise piece..
What would be the benefit of moving him out of his starting role? And for Beatty? A guy who was average at best? Beatty largest value will be off the bench.
However, the Schwartz signing is not looking great. It's looking like Baas part II. Really wish we would have taken a shot at Iupati (though I haven't seen how he's played yet this year).
I don't know a lot about OT play (maybe B in ALB can chime in, since IIRC, he played OT), but people are saying that Beatty can't play RT.
If that's true, it puts the Giants in a tricky spot. You want to put your 5 best OL on the field, but is it really worth moving Flowers out from LT when he can be there for 5+ years?
We all remember 2010 when they re-inserted O'Hara for a player (Whitfield? Shawn or Stacey Andrews) and the O-line suffered. The situation is slightly different as the player O'Hara was replacing wasn't a young 1st rd pick, but it was still subtraction by addition.
If Beatty CAN move to RT, I actually like the line of:
Flowers - Pugh - Richburg - Schwartz - Beatty
That line is solid enough to keep Eli upright and run some power plays to the left side.
Yes. Why waste all the work, progress and chemistry developed and move a rookie to a new position half way through the season? And remember, Flowers was an LT in college for vast majority of his games.

Big thumbs up to Flowers and the coaches that made the tough decision to hang the rookie out as raw meat. It has paid off so far.
He's certainly not. Apparently he rolled it again after the first play but came back anyway. Article in the post this AM.
I wasn't sad for the pick at all, but I was shitting a brick that we had to start a rookie at LT. I also think Beatty is a ton better than what many give him credit for. That said, Flowers is already a stud, and with a higher ceiling. Moving him out of that LT spot would be nuts. I'd be happy with Beatty on the right side now, even though I think Newhouse is doing a decent job. I wouldn't make the switch right away though anyway, unless Beatty is looking like an animal when he gets back into practice.
If Flowers is better at protecting Eli's blindside, this is no choice at all - keep him there. If Beatty can play on another spot better than anyone else, put him there.

he won't be on the team next year. No more scholarships, and so far Newhouse has done a respectable job. Going forward, when we're looking for an OL, finesse players need not apply.

That's like praising the lead singer of Silverchair for being the best guy in the band.
