I don't think it's a coincidence that our run defense is infinitely better when Jon Beason plays tackle football for our team. The first two games - when he was holding a clipboard - were a whole lot different than the second two - when he was barking signals near the line of scrimmage.
Mentally he gets guys lined up correctly. He also hits the line with such force. I'm not sure how many tackles he made but if you watch the game again. When he recognizes run, he shoots the gap with such force and blows up lineman. I recall one specific run where he shot the gap and took on 2 lineman leaving Thomas free to make the tackle. He's also the vocal leader and guys love him. You can tell by watching him interact with his teammates that's he's greatly respected.
I'm not sure Beason makes that goal line play on 3rd down like Unga did.
Agreed - there's no way Beason could have closed that quickly. On the other hand, he might have gotten a quicker start from reading the play. Hard to say.
I'm glad we have both. They seem to be shaping up as a nice platoon, and keeping Beason on a pitch count might help his health. The workload distribution among the LBs seems to be pretty good. I just hope Kennard is OK. The drop-off to Herzlich would be significant, and I don't think they want to reshuffle the lineup to move Thomas to that side.

Herz has been pretty good at SLB when stopping the run. You have to get him out of there in pass coverage, but He'd be ok, IMO, at least on 1st and 2nd downs.
RE: Eric: Beason might have made the play, but differently.

Get Unga some reps in practice at SAM. Herzlich can play SAM if we are expecting the run, but all teams need to do is see him out there and audible to a pass
Since beason is a topic, this info from Art Stapleton cements

It's not like Unga is a coverage demon himself. Dallas victimized the hell out of him, especially on the game winning drive. There's a reason he plays in the middle despite being built like an oversized safety,
and he said as much. He said Spags had told them (and pardon my shitty bad at football explanation) that when the RB shifts his back foot towards the QB then watch for the run to that side he said he noticed it and sent JT but that JT gets credit for making a great jump to the ball and getting there quickly.
It was interesting to hear just how much preparation and attention to subtle details it takes to make a single play.
This football team has apparently taken a complete turnaround since last year. And its largely because, quite simply, the snaps are being filled by tough, physical players.
We aren't getting pushed around anymore.
That gives you margin for error, in games, because regardless of how the ball bounces, if you're winning the physical battle you're probably winning the game.
In fact, we've been leading almost the whole f#cking season and have won the physical battle in all 4 games. Karlos Williams being evaluated for a concussion after facing our run D.
It's not going to be sexy but guys like Nikita Whitlock, Dwayne Harris, Jonathan Casillas, J.T. Thomas, Orleans Darkwa, Will Tye, Owa Odighizuwa - these are the guys running around filling out snaps and they are fast enough, mean enough and tough enough to completely change the look of our team on the field. Herz looks the best I've seen him.
You either beat, or get beat, and right now we are beating people up a lot like we did from 05-08.
We are just flat-out pounding people. And now with 2 impressive showings against the league's toughest fronts - the Rams last year and the Bills this year. This OLine is building a resume.
JB is this year's Pierce (or Chase Blackburn too). Not necessarily the prototypical AA you want at MLB but high football IQ / knowledge of the system and great at directing his D
That mention of pointing to KW reminds me of times AP would shift the whole DL to one side just b4 the snap...and the RB would flow right into the buzzsaw
Also, I'm not sure Beason makes that goal line play on 3rd down like Unga did.

Agree. Beason is smart, but he is not very fast anymore. But he does direct traffic out there.

yes, he's been injured since week 1

"And watching the Giants pre-snap on fourth down: they were doing a lot of pointing. I think Beason told Thomas just b4 snap to cover RB."
Video: Watch Jon Beason point to Karlos Williams while communicating pre-snap with J.T. Thomas. Huge play.
