I suppose "any given Sunday" as a response would be bandied about, but besides that. I know San Francisco lost some guys (Gore) and that stellar linebacker who retired outta nowhere.
Anybody familiar with the team?
What's happened there?
Should this game be considered a "gimmie" for the Giants?
Thoughts appreciated -
Lonnnnng time, but the spread for this one confirms it.
Gore is actually the departure that hurts the least because Carlos Hyde is a capable RB. Anyway, any given Sunday yada yada yada - this is a game the Giants absolutely should win. The Niners are a bad football team.
Kap is taking the heat as usual. but they have a horrid Offensive Line. their line looks like ours after we lost our horses. 6 sacks allowed last week. 21 combined yards by RBs.
D is still solid but does not have top shelf talent. Smith's are gone. Fangio's gone. best player is FS Eric Reid who heads best S group in the NFL. Solid kicking game.
all in all, this is a fragile team that will quit early after a cross country fight. start fast and get them pointing fingers
Their offense is godawful. The Giants have stopped every running game so I expect that to continue, and without Vernon Davis they have no receivers who can hurt you.
Kap and Hyde can still beat you though. Cannot overlook the 49ers with 2 huge division games coming up. That, and the way this team usually plays on Sunday/Monday night games makes me weary of this game. With what the 49ers defense did to Eli last year at home, the team NEEDS to remain focused and get over .500 against a weaker opponent.
They will finish as one of the worst 3 teams in the league but there is gamebreaking talent on both sides. I wouldn't want WR Torrey Smith anywhere near my team but he can still knife through a secondary and get the deep ball as fast as any WR in the game. Kaepernick still has a hell of an arm power wise and he can run faster than some RBs. Chances are they will be terrible but there is still ability on this team. Nothing like what we have seen out of some of the worst teams in recent years. There is defensive talent in their front seven as well and S Eric Reid can start on most teams.
If NYG can play to their average level, they win by 8+. But we know that isn't always how it works.
The Giants can't overlook anyone, and I don't think they will. This team has the right mentality.
I'm guessing their showing against the Packers was due both to home field advantage and a sense of desperation in the locker room. Neither will be a factor this weekend.
Carlos Hyde is a beast, though, and CK can still beat you with his feet. Clog the middle and keep the QB in the pocket all afternoon and good things will happen.
Like someone said, there are no gimmes with the Giants.
Their defense will play pretty well so Eli must be sharp like he has been to date.
The giants can just as easily lose (as win) the rest of their games. Stats or logic have never been meaningful entities when this team.
1. They lost 3 straight and need a win. They played GB hard but still fell short. Do they still want to fight to win or have any of them given up?
2. Will the Giants stay hungry? We should. It's too early for our team to start relaxing. We need to keep putting up wins before Romo and Dez return. It's our chance to take the division lead right now.
3. Last year Eli threw 5 picks against them. It was 5 wasn't it?
Good outlook:
1. It's at home and they have a long way to travel to face us.
2. Finally a team to run against (IMHO). Average rushing against them; Vikings = 4.2 yards, Steelers = 3.6 yards, Arizona = 3.6 yards, Packers = 4.9 yards. Plus I hoping they focus on defending the pass more.
3. As others have mentioned, their defense is still stout but their offense is non-existent. We should be able to hold them to nothing.
4. I believe the Giants are still very hungry and improve every week. Arrow still pointed up. Still healthy (no new injuries). They certainly appear to be learning Spags defense. Beason will likely get more snaps that Sunday. Double OO will get more time so he can catch up.
The 49ers are a bad team. As others have said, though, they do have some weapons. And putting 2,500 miles between Colin Kaepernick and the lynch mob back home might be just what he needs. As awful as he has been, CK is still the best athlete on the field when San Francisco has the ball (with Torrey Smith a likely #2). And the Giants are likely to face him without their best linebacker.
This game is a nice opportunity for Steve Spagnuolo to continue rebuilding his reputation, because the 49ers are a team that can be taken apart with a good defensive gameplan. It's no secret what they do well, and what they don't. The Giants will probably attack the right side of the offensive line. Pears and Devey have been awful, and any reshuffle will involve throwing green linemen into the fire. Weakness there goes a long way toward neutralizing Kaepernick, who has made a lot of plays over the years moving to his right.
Specials have to be good again also with no break-downs in coverage. Would also like to see Harris take one to the house.
The Niners still have a few horses that can make our day miserable and so we cannot afford to take any team for granted. Just take care of business and stay away from errors and sloppy play. Lastly, it would be nice to have the ability to feed off the home crowd too. Crowd needs to make their presence felt for once.
If the spread is only 7 i would take the Giants and i'm conservative on this stuff. I think we wallop them.
Kaepernick is taking a beating in the media and some of it is merited - he's not a good QB. But i'm not sure how many QBs in the league would survive behind that OL. What was once a strength during the Harbaugh era, that OL is now maybe the worst in football.
They beat us at home last year! Remember teh 5 INT game by Eli? Same team and hopefully Eli is prepared this time.
You mean minus Borland who retired, Willis and Justin Smith who retired. Aldon smith who is gone.
Same team??
Same uniforms maybe.
This is a good Giants team playing at home against a terrible 49ers team that has to fly across the country. The Giants will win.
Will the Giants win by 30+ points and will the game never be close? Likely not. Will there be mistakes that negative nancies jump on and find reasons to bitch about after the game? Of course.
But the Giants will take care of business and move to 3 and 2.
LOL, i can only assume you are superstitious. Yeah... memories of 2011 and 2012 are permeating that SF locker room this week - talk about motivation!!

True that they've lost some players, however, they still have a fairly decent defense and their safeties are good.
A little under three years ago... - ( New Window )
Against GB, he left a lot of plays on the field. Guys were wide open for TDs on two occasions. Once he threw into the ground and once he ran for a ten yard gain. Make those throws and its 17-17.
Crash down on Hyde, force KP to actually pass and cause some turnovers when he does. IF we put up 20 points, I like our chances.
The bigger fear is our poor Sunday Night Football record. I think Al Michaels has our number...
