Baseball - Art Howe
Hockey - Don Cherry (actually liked him!)
Well....
Greg from LI : 10/7/2015 9:34 am : link
Joe Gibbs - no secret that the Skins are my most hated team, but Gibbs is a class act and a tremendous football coach. Only guy to win three titles with three different QBs.

Sparky Anderson - he was one of a kind.

Jim Schoenfeld - the Don Koharski incident and its aftermath was absolutely hilarious.

Gregg Popovich - simply the best. Might be the very best I've ever seen in any sport.

He's been amazing..Wasn't Pop just a GM when he took over? Did he have any coaching experience at the lower levels that you know of?

NFL - Bill Walsh. Yeah, I hate the 9'ers, but he revolutionized the game more than anyone in my football lifetime.

MLB - Sparky Anderson

NBA - Probably Pops.

NHL - Don't know, don't care.

Pop was a Division III head coach and an NBA assistant
Greg from LI : 10/7/2015 10:43 am : link
Then was hired as the Spurs GM, then took the coaching job himself after a few seasons.
I'll play. not necessarily thee most successful, but liked these guys:
Victor in CT : 10/7/2015 10:43 am : link
NFL: Bud Grant. Loved watching those frigid playoff games at the old Bloomington Stadium. Vikes with no coats or gloves. The Great NFL Films recaps.

MLB: Billy Martin. Look past the caricature, he was an old school baseball genius. Pennington's book made me respect him even more.

NHL: John Brophy. Obscure, but colorful, was coach of the Long Island Ducks at my 1st game of any kind in 1969 when I was 5 years old. Later on I learned that he and the Ducks were the inspiration for Slap Shot.

NBA: Cotton Fitzsimmons. Colorful guy, good coach.
Scotty Bowman
pjcas18 : 10/7/2015 10:49 am : link
is probably who I consider the best coach ever, but hard to say when he's had great collections of talent to work with.

but 9 rings as a coach with three different teams is impressive.

also the NHL playoffs were kind of a joke when so many teams made it, but missing the playoffs one time in his entire coaching career is impressive too and that included a stint in Buffalo.

Thanks Greg
the odd thing with Pop was that he was hired as GM in the first place
Greg from LI : 10/7/2015 10:51 am : link
How many teams promote an assistant coach to GM? I can't think of another instance of this.
Gotta put

Neither could I and why I felt it smacked of desperation..:)
Don Cherry is revered in Rochester

Curious why Ted Nolan..I remember when he was highly sought after when he was in Buffalo(?) and I was delighted when we snared him
NFL favorite is probably Marv Levy, or maybe John Madden.

The one who impressed me most was Bill Walsh, but I don't think that was your question.

Other sports? Meh. Sparky Anderson, for sure. Don Zimmer, I guess, though it's colored by all the years he spent in pinstripes after Boston.

Madden could very well be a fave after Lombardi
