NGT: UCLA Linebacker Myles Jack declares for 2016 Draft

Sy'56 : 10/7/2015 9:02 am
Jack is a junior for the Bruins that is missing this season after tearing up a knee ligament in practice a couple weeks ago.

Coming in to the season he was 1 or 1A among the draft eligible LBs. Real fun player to watch that has all the speed and power you want out of a LB. Think Bobby Wagner when trying to draw up a comparison. He also has played a good amount of RB for the Bruins and some people think he could be a top 100 pick at that position if he focused solely on it.

A lot will depend on his knee rehab and physicals...he will likely be a top 20 pick next spring but he isn't a fit in every scheme. Some believe this is a poor decision on his end but I've seen enough of him to believe he can be a dangerous LB in the league.
Apparently Mora is one of those who believe that Jack
ktinsc : 10/7/2015 9:06 am : link
is making an unwise decision. Unwise for who would be the question for Mora...
If his medicals check out
JonC : 10/7/2015 9:13 am : link
I'd put him in the mix in round 2 or 3. Really like the player for NYG, but also expect NYG to be looking for DE/WR/CB high in the next draft.
Dropping out of school
Csonka : 10/7/2015 9:15 am : link
because he can't play now is a black mark to UCLA in my book. Aren't we supposed to at least pretend they're student athletes and that education means a little something?

Why pretend if it's not true.

And there you have the scholarship football star perspective
JonC : 10/7/2015 10:00 am : link
which of course is proof many of them are immature and take their great fortune for granted. No surprise.

Round 2-3?

I thought he was a first round player.
Carl
JonC : 10/7/2015 10:05 am : link
He is, but his post-knee condition will need to be considered and you can safely wager NYG will be looking at premium positions before LB.

did you like Jack better than Jaylon Smith?

Jaylon to me looks like the perfect linebacker in todays NFL. Fits every scheme
With our

inability to rush the passer this year I'd be pretty stunned if we didn't go DE early and often in next year's draft.

He has a $5 million insurance policy that pays off if he got injured and didn't go in the first round. Why would he not declare? He wins either way.

i would be shocked if he could get an insurance policy like that. Insurance policy against a career ending injury, sure. But not one against a 1 year injury that prevents him from going in the first round, how would you prove he would have gone in the first round otherwise?
amazingly enough, DE is actually more of a need than LB now

JPP's gone next season and the current crew either isn't very good or is very green.

Yep, just have to see which 4-3 DEs potentially fit the NYG mold.

WR and CB are also going to figure in the mix. NYG wanted a WR in the 3rd round last Spring and likely would've picked one ahead of OO.
Pardon my ignorance
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/7/2015 10:39 am : link
but doesn't UCLA play a 3-4? Would this guy even fit here?
Fit is part of the scouting process
JonC : 10/7/2015 10:46 am : link
as Sy indicated. I think Miles would perform at a high level in a 4-3, he's got the AA and instincts. Need to see where scouts think his best fit is, MIKE or WILL in a 4-3, or ultimately in a 3-4.

Mook, Silas Redd did the same thing and he collected when he was not drafted..
Draft
Colin@gbn : 10/7/2015 10:53 am : link
Morning guys: Nice to see a little draft talk. Only 203 days to go. Agree 100% that the Giants top priority heading into the draft will be a DE. Problem as I see is that after a promising start DE is beginning to look a little iffy for 2016. In fact - and i'd love to hear Dave's comments on this- on first blush the 2016 looks like it could have a decent top 10 or so but otherwise looks to be a below average draft. Assume say that the Giants pick 15-25, the only DEs currently in that range look to be Shawn Oakman, who is built like Tarzan but doesn't always play that way, and maybe Ogbah from Oklahoma State, another pretty good athlete but raw like O-O. In fact in our latest mock we had the Giants taking UCLA DT Kenny Clark, because the DE value just wasn't there. However, there could be better value at CB at that point. Ramsay and Hargreaves are likely to be gone but there is a solid second group of CBs including Tre'Davious White of LSU, Clemson redshirt soph Mac Alexander and maybe Va tech's Kendall Fuller if he is healthy. In that sense Myles Jack, if he's healthy, might be an interesting option although he doesn't play a Giants premium position. He's a terrific athlete who could be an all-conference level RB who UCLA used at times this year as a KO returner and nickle back; plus he's versatile in that one could look at him inside as well as outside.

Browns CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu took out an insurance policy and just received over 3 million because he fell to the 7th round due to his severe knee injury.
thanks for that info guys
MookGiants : 10/7/2015 10:57 am : link
odd, I guess I could see it more for guys who go crashing down to the 7th round or out of the draft entirely.

So does Jack sit there at the end of the first round and pray a team doesn't take him?
Colin
JonC : 10/7/2015 11:00 am : link
Good to see you jumping in. The Clemson CB jumped out at times versus ND, will keep an eye on him.

Have you dug into potential UFA DEs yet?
Gotta give kudos to Cardale
old man : 10/7/2015 11:56 am : link
At least he's saying what we have all believed.
At best it's now Athlete-Student. This will upset the NCAA a little.
Best case scenario for him
Jimmy Meatballs : 10/7/2015 11:57 am : link
Is to go the first pick of the second round :)
Maybe we will need to boaden the focus
Reb8thVA : 10/7/2015 12:28 pm : link
from picking a DE to addressing the larger problem, improving the pass rush. Maybe that means picking a LB that can blitz or a DT. I hate having o use another top pick on a WR but its looking like a need again.
Sy & Colin...
Reb8thVA : 10/7/2015 12:30 pm : link
Any thoughts on Shaq Lawson DE from Clemson?
Reb
JonC : 10/7/2015 12:33 pm : link
The problem with that is they haven't done very well picking those edge players. Perhaps Kennard signals a change in fortunes, but I'd wager they wind up targeting a WR or CB if no DE is there.
I wasn't necessarily focused on the first round....
Reb8thVA : 10/7/2015 12:37 pm : link
if the draft is light on DEs maybe we need to think differently about improving the pass rush.
Reb
JonC : 10/7/2015 12:40 pm : link
I think NYG agrees with you, they liked Kennard as an edge rusher as well as Moore to stand up at the LOS outside the DE.
The knee injury was early enough that...
Torrag : 10/7/2015 12:41 pm : link
...he should be ready to particiapte in pre draft events such as the Combine or Pro Days. That will deteremine his draft status. If his rehab progresses on schedule I think he's going in the late first round area.
DE will likely be in the mix
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/7/2015 12:45 pm : link
but CB, WR and OT will likely be equally important come draft time. Really need a keeper in one of those spots.

What will Amukumara ask for? If its top tier money, I don;t think he;s worth it, he's a notch below.

Will Beatty return?

Will Cruz and Randle be here?

The season has to play out and we could see players develop, what if OO and Wynn end up being a terrific duo by year's end.

Hey Jim
JonC : 10/7/2015 12:48 pm : link
Yep, need to see their decision on JPP, Beatty and Prince, but DE, WR, and CB are all significant needs.

At DE especially we're poorer than we've been in many years.

Safety is right there too
beatrixkiddo : 10/7/2015 2:40 pm : link
I hope they resign both Randle and Prince, both are still so young and have so much upside. I'd love a Dynamic Safety to pair with Collins, Merriwether has been a pleasant surprise but I'd love a true Coverage Safety.

If the talent isn't there for a DL, I would love to see them add a LB. Beason isn't going to last forever, Kennard is very solid, and J.T Thomas has been good, but if you can grab a game changing athlete there you do it, be it a MLB or OLB, Thomas and Kennard can always play MLB if they need too.

WR might be a need if Cruz doesn't show anything this year, and if Randle isn't re-signed. I like Sterling Shepard from Oklahoma as a possible slot option for this team, he has good hands, quick feet and finds ways to get open. Reminds me a little of steve smith, but with more toughness and an extra gear. Wonder where he goes in the draft.
I think OT has moved down the priorities list a ways
Torrag : 10/7/2015 2:43 pm : link
Between Beatty and Hart our RT of the future could be on the roster and LT is set.

You might be correct. A lot of it depends on Beatty and Schwartz's health.

If Cruz doesn't get better soon WR might be a huge priority with Randle unlikely to get a contract imo.

If I had to bet at this way-too-soon stage Id say the first three picks are DL, DL, and WR...maybe not in that order.
Number one priority
BigBlueCane : 10/7/2015 5:08 pm : link
will change between now and draft day.

That being said, dropping out of college, where at least he had a modicum of structure, probably isn't going to do him any favors.
If jack is there and healthy you sprint to the podium and take him
GiantsFan84 : 10/7/2015 6:42 pm : link
if you are picking in the middle of the round. He is fantastic with coverage skills you do not see out of linebackers. He is a true 3 down backer and those days of getting eaten alive by RBs and TEs will immediately come to an end. He is the defensive answer to a lot of the mismatch problem players offenses throw at you these days.
