Why TC appears to be (at least to me) unflappable

Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2015 1:05 pm
From his Jay Fund site:

For the Gala last week Coach was asked, "What's your favorite saying or phrase?" His answer:

"One phrase I constantly use is when someone asks me how I’m doing I’ll say, “Never better.” And what “Never better” means is strength and spirit and no matter what happens you are never going to influence my spirit; it’s always going to be strong - be as forthright and positive as can be."

Not much of a surprise here, but he is really going to be missed imv

at it for a long time, imo..Marv Levy always seemed to maintain his enthusiasm as well
Tom's character is unimpeachable. He is a true leader.

That said I'm of the opinion his eye for talent or his judgement prioritizing talent vs effort may be skewing in a way I'm not sure fosters the Giants best interests on the field. I still wouldn't want any other coach at this time.
At the end of the day

I personally think he is a man of integrity who has a strong moral compass. I believe this plays a strong role in how he approaches life and career. Add a burning desire to win...as a fan, I can't ask for much more in a coach. I've come to truly appreciate how he leads this team.
He's my all time favorite

have to be a strong person to be able to withstand the pressure cooker of being an NFL coach for as long as he has in the biggest market. that is certainly a strength of coughlin. he brings that strength consistently no matter how his team is doing in a game or in a season.
I think we tend to forget or gloss over
Big Blue '56 : 10/7/2015 1:28 pm : link
how hard it has to be to handle 53 unique personalities and try to get them prepared to commit to "combat" each and every week..What a brutal job, imv..

I disagree with your last post. For the most part, athletes are hungry competitors and look forward to winning and playing every week. Yeah, you have some who take a "scholarships" approach and coast along doing the bare minimum, but they are usually called out and cut eventually.

It is not a brutal job - it's a highly paid job with a lot of great perks and after you are done, you can make a pretty damn good living being a speaker, analyst, consultant etc.

lucky to have a class act at coach and QB for as long as we have. Of course, it's not really luck -- it is a function of our ownership and their priorities.

Still, in today's NFL it's pretty damn rare.

2nd best coach in NFL, and 2-0 in big game against the best coach. HOF coach
BB56 I posted this on another thread, seems relevant here as well

Here is something I was pondering earlier
Chris684 : 10/6/2015 11:41 am : link : reply
in regards to Eli and TC.

Is there something to the idea that chaos and pressure brings out the best of both of them? I think by now, most of us who are realistic, realize everything these guys bring to the table day in and day out. But what is it about the two of them that seems to better once they are placed in the pressure cooker.

Obviously it remains to be seen what happens this season but here we go again in an 0-2 hole, everyone on notice, Coughlin can't survive this time, etc. As of this morning, we find ourselves with every opportunity to take this division and get in the tournament and if we do it would be so similar to the storylines of 2007 when TC was left for dead and 2011 bouncing back from the late season failures against Philly/GB in 2010.

Coughlin has his faults as a head coach. At different times he has seemed unreasonably strict, he has had his share of game management blunders (hands team Philly 2010), trouble selecting coordinators and a couple of other gaffes early this season. But back him into a corner and the man is like a cage fighter. His teams seem to feed off of his toughness and resolve. Just when you doubt his teams. Watch out.

Eli, same thing. We've seen him play some of his worst football in quarters 1-3 only to come back brilliantly in the 4th quarter. We've also seen probably his best overall play in the playoffs, on the road, in big games, in the elements and of course in the Super Bowls.

I find it interesting. The more doubt that surrounds the TC/Eli teams, the better they operate. Chaos, underdogs, pressure, they seem to embrace it.
I actually don't share the same view of Coughlin as many here
Vanzetti : 10/7/2015 2:46 pm : link
I think he has been an A+ coach in the postseason, but I think his regular season performance is "meh." Not bad but not great.

But right now, I think the Giants have the perfect formula with Spags and McAdoo. Gilbride always ran a version of the offense Coughlin installed in 2004. McAdoo is running his own offense. In time that will pay big dividends because this offense is much more QB friendly.

I can definitely see this trio staying together for another 4-5 years.

One of my main criticisms of Coughlin is that he has a very spotty track record with selecting his coordinators. I feel very good with McAdoo and Spags by his side.

Fix the time management issues rather than defending poor decisions.
Wow, look at the BBI threads after the Dallas game
JohnB : 10/7/2015 3:15 pm : link
and how TC was pasted far and wide. Two wins later and he can do almost no wrong. Amazing.

For the record,I think TC is one of the best in the game today and will retire as the best in NY Giants' history.

Can we stop with the military BS. Tom was not a "Major" and never served in the military.

I didnt get it when he first arrived and there were times (more than once) where i doubted this mans ability. But....even if this team goes finishes this season 2-14 my opinion of him will not change. The theory that players wont be motivated by him or can't relate to him is flat wrong.

For the record i think this is his last season whatever the outcome....i think we win the East and he tells each and every doubter to line up and kiss his ass again
