How badly will losing Kennard hurt this defense?

JD in NC : 10/7/2015 3:18 pm
Kennard has been playing some outstanding football, and there's no doubt he will be missed. Given how well Unga has been performing, would it make sense to slide him into Kennard's spot and keep him on the field with Beason? If so, how big of a drop off do you think there will be?

It's going to hurt...we'll see what Spagnuolo can come up with. Could see more of Unga...or Casillas or even Herzlich.
Does it look like Vernon Davis will play?
BlackLight : 10/7/2015 3:22 pm : link
Coughlin seemed to suggest he would - but I don't know if that was just smoke.

Smoke?
Kennard has been a force but...
raever : 10/7/2015 3:23 pm : link
...the durability questions swirling around him are rearing their ugly head again. This goes well back into his college career. He's never been able to string together an extended run of healthy football.

The good news is we're in a better position talent wise at the position to absorb his loss than we have been for some time. Spags will find a way.
Is he out? It's only Wednesday.

losing kennard hurts big time
GiantsFan84 : 10/7/2015 3:25 pm : link
but luckily SF is a disaster on offense and the defense should be fine for this game without him.

Vernon Davis is totally washed up and it really doesn't matter if he plays much or not.

It was part of his weekly opening statement, where Coughlin does whatever he can to make the opposition sound unbeatable.
What'd I miss?

says it's "day-to-day" but won't say if it is worse or better than the hamstring that kept him out almost a month last year.

of you guys really need to follow the injury reports...

Kennard hurt his hamstring in the Bills game and was pulled. He went for an MRI on Monday.
Aren't we putting the cart ahead of the horse?

There are only two practices each week now. He missed today's. It doesn't sound like he will go tomorrow. If so, he's most likely out.

Right, and he didn't practice today...but it is only Wednesday. The Giants have a poor track record with hamstrings but let's not amputate yet!

No, but hammys being what they are, they will probably be cautious.
Day to day from the Giants medical staff is never a good thing.
Victor in CT : 10/7/2015 3:36 pm : link
This guy is such a tease. He shows so much and then BOOM the injury bug comes. I hope it isn't serious, he's really coming on and Spags knows how to use him.
Eric, until he is ruled out he's not out...
okiegiant : 10/7/2015 3:38 pm : link
He may yet go tomorrow, and even if he doesn't he still has 3 days(kinda all day Sunday).

Coughlin was going to go with Fells before his foot fell off even though he didn't practice.
In any case, I really don't thing Unga would serve as an OLB
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/7/2015 3:39 pm : link
You signed Thomas and Casillas for a reason. I'm sure they'll get some time.
Although having just read the transcript...
okiegiant : 10/7/2015 3:40 pm : link
it doesn't sound promising.
The way Kennard describes the treatment he's getting,
GeofromNJ : 10/7/2015 4:05 pm : link
it seems like it's more than just day to day. I'd be surprised if he plays. He says the decision is up to the trainers, not to him.
Kennard is their best LB by far
Greg from LI : 10/7/2015 4:08 pm : link
The last thing we need is Herzlich on the field for anything other than special teams.
Is he ANOTHER guy that can't stay on the field?
averagejoe : 10/7/2015 4:22 pm : link
Please dear God not another one. I like everything about this kid and he is fast becoming the leader of this defense. The only Giants that stay healthy are the ones that can't play.
On a related note
BlackLight : 10/7/2015 4:25 pm : link
how is that Flowers can basically will himself to practice and play on a bad ankle? It almost sounds like the training staff and the coaches don't get a vote.

He's a throwback.
There's a lasting impression of Herzlich...
Big Blue Blogger : 10/7/2015 4:28 pm : link
...that stems largely from images of him haplessly playing MIKE while he was still regaining his strength and conditioning. He's a decent fill-in on the outside, at least on first and second downs. He's not an NFL starter, and you don't want him anywhere near the field in passing situations; but Kennard is no prize in coverage either, last week's interception notwithstanding.

If the Giants are circling Philly for Kennard's return, I'm fine with it. All hands on deck for that one. As games for him to miss go, this is about as good as it gets.
He's the best player on the defense
Rflairr : 10/7/2015 4:34 pm : link
So what do you think?
Didn't see the game
RinR : 10/7/2015 4:48 pm : link
but from Joey's Game Review write up it sounds like Kennard was very solid.

LB Devon Kennard is becoming a problem. You can’t throw on him, you can’t run on him and he loves him a little contact. Defensive head honcho Steve Spagnuolo has deployed Kennard everywhere and the dynamic second-year LB is delivering, breaking up 3 passes intended for TE Charles Clay, one of which was intercepted late in the 1st quarter as the LB was lined up one-on-one against Clay down the sideline. The field position resulted in an easy 2-play, 32-yard TD drive. Kennard was back at it on the next series, rushing up the A gap to knock down a Tyrod Taylor offering at the line of scrimmage and forcing a punt. Kennard did get beaten on a TD pass by RB Karlos Williams on the same route he picked off earlier in the game, but #59 stopped 3 drives on his own early.
Kennard may not be an ace in coverage
Greg from LI : 10/7/2015 4:53 pm : link
But Herzlich would never, ever be able to pull off a play like Kennard's interception.
WTH?
short lease : 10/7/2015 5:19 pm : link
Count me in as another who missed this .... let him sit now. Better to have him around towards the end of the season.
Greg: Not sure I agree with you there.

Herzlich actually has terrific hands for a linebacker. He picked off 12 passes at BC, and one of his victims was (Hokie Trash!) Tyrod Taylor. I guess you can say Herzlich would never be in position to make that play, but Kennard was actually beaten for a first down. He took advantage of Clay not securing the catch. Fantastic play, and a superb recovery, but not exactly great coverage.
Unga is probably the choice ....

Maybe as fast as Kennard (with very good hands); good ballhawk.

He is, but what do you want.
giantgiantfan : 10/7/2015 7:29 pm : link
You can't play on a bum hamstring. Maybe if its mild, but even then you'll suck. I pulled hamstring playing goalie in hockey 2 weeks ago and with no sub I stayed in, but it was a joke trying to play on one leg.

Let him rest and unleash him on Philly. As others have stated a bad 49ers team @home is the time for him to be out. Hopefully these Giants don't play to level of their opponent in this one. This should be a two score victory.

I missed the Kennard injury
mrvax : 10/7/2015 7:54 pm : link
also. I usually just come to this forum. If I see it, I see it.

Sucks that he's out. The Giants having a linebacker that can cover a TE is very unusual and very needed. I wonder if Kennard is 100%, if he'd be able to stay with an aging Jason Witten?

If so, that would be fantastic.
Wow, slow down....

Kennard has made some plays, and he has given up some plays also...let's wait until the end of the season before we anoint him....even Larry Donnell caught 3 td's one afternoon...

Gimme a break doomie. Yeah Kennard isn't yet an All Pro or Pro Bowler but if he continued to play +/- at the level he has through the 1st quarter season, he would be. He's been playing great, and not just last week. Losing him for a game or few will hurt, definitely.
You guys!

I said before the season started that he had potential....JW had potential too....last season he made a few plays and missed some....

I said he had to stay on the field and play against better competition than he did last year.....

What he has done in four games is not all pro material.....let him play a full season, and see what he does....I hope he does improve as the season goes on.....I hope he can stay on the field....

BBI gets excited when one of our linebackers makes a play, because they have been too few and far between....

When Beason came he he made some plays, and compared to what our other linebackers were doing, he looked great....but he was just making plays an average linebacker should make.....something our other linebackers couldn't do.....

Herzlich is the SAM backup
JonC : 10/8/2015 11:01 am : link
figure he gets the nod and for them to use more extra safety looks taking Herz off the field on passing downs, as often as they can get the matchup.

Unga is the MIKE on passing downs where they seem to not like Beason as the matchup.
Losing Kennard hurts
JonC : 10/8/2015 11:04 am : link
he's easily been their best edge defender and pass rusher through four games. But, this defense should be able to contain SF enough for Eli and the offense to hang 20+ on them for a victory.

You are comparing Kennard's play this year with Jacquain Williams? Seriously? I think you like talking more than you actually like watching football with your eyes open!
BlueLou,
Doomster : 10/8/2015 6:27 pm : link
where does it say that I am comparing him to JW?

All I said was, JW was supposedly the next wunderkind at linebacker and failed.....

Some on this board are making this guy out to be something he isn't......his play thus far, has been average, for a linebacker.....but average for a Giant linebacker is leaps and bounds, over what we have been trotting out on the field the last few years....he made a good play, taking the ball away from Clay, as they both hit the ground.....he was beaten badly by Williams on the TD pass.....yes, he will have growing pains...he is a work in progress.....he also has problems staying on the field.....hopefully the hammy comes around and he grows into the linebacker we want him to be.....but he's not there yet, like some think....

Kennard broke up 3 passes on 3rd downs to stop drives and rushed inside and batted down a pass on another 3rd down. He was a force on Sunday, recognizing that isn't a bad thing.

I recall he was picked on in the passing game versus San Fran last season so lets not have a repeat.
