NFT: How Sad - 11 Yr old Boy Shoots 8 yr old Girl

Bob in Vt : 10/8/2015 3:36 pm
The incident started when the boy asked to see the girl's puppy.

When she said no, the boy got a gun and shot her dead, according to the sheriff. The boy used his father's 12-gauge shotgun, which he got from an unlocked closet.

The registered gun owner
Dave in PA : 10/8/2015 5:25 pm : link
Should be sentenced for involuntary manslaughter or something similar due to gross negligence. I don't even know what to do with this psychotic kid, there's no easy answer. What a horrifying thing for this girl and her parents and other family members. Fucking hell

in upstate NY, over the past year, a youngster accidentally killed another youngster. The father was charged with a crime for having a gun improperly stored. I don't think he did jail time, but he did suffer some consequences. In his case, he had the gun in one area, and the bullets hidden in another area, so he thought it was good enough, but the kid was able to retrieve both and load the weapon.

The problem is not the gun. it's the improper storing of it.

The problems are many and the gun is absolutely one of them. One of the other key problems is this relentless paranoia that has captured the minds of our citizens. The incessant need to own a gun to fend off the imaginary intruder or government man or zombie apocalypse. We are all less safe on average for every gun owned precisely because people are stupid or lazy or brazen and don't take the exceeding caution to keep them locked away and completely inaccessible.

How do we end the fear mongering that is ever present?
The parent is definitely at fault
Bleedin Blue : 10/8/2015 6:29 pm : link
and should be held accountable ! Wtf are these people thinking leaving a loaded weapon around the house not locked up!

That stupid bitch mother in Sandy Hook learned her lesson the hard way! Her son killed her, unfortunately he didn't stop there!

I own four handguns, all are unloaded, and locked in a safe which only I know the combo to. I'm retired PO that's why I have 4 handguns.

There should be mandatory safety courses and background checks universally for anyone wanting to own a gun. I understand this doesn't apply to long guns and shotguns, but there has to be a middle ground with common sense.

If the 11 year old got the keys to his dad's car

Headhunter, senseless is the right adjective! I'm just appalled at the lack of common sense when you see how easy it is to acquire a gun, legally and illegally! There has to be a system nation wide to weed out the emotionally disturbed and idiots.
I have no answers
Headhunter : 10/8/2015 7:06 pm : link
none, but I will continue to get involved in gun threads knowing not a thing is going to change. If nothing changed after Sandy Hook, a mad man could go into a maternity ward with an AK and kill all the babies and nothing still will change, but we will be making the same arguments for and against

I sort of disagree with this. I think it's a solution dances around the problem. Sure, he is guilty of child endangerment, but this won't do anything to address the real problem. The gun.

Except that short of a wholesale repeal of the 2nd amendment, and some sort of program to successfully get 300+ millions gun back out of circulation, "the problem" won't be rectified.

I know. Let's do nothing! It's working like a charm now. We only have to bury a few kids a week. That's acceptable loss for a ghoul like Wayne Lapierre and his army gun-loving lunatics...

He's a sociopath. You don't bully and eventually murder someone by accident. I'll bet they find dead animals buried somewhere in the area.

all gun deaths are terrible as individuals have motivation to do these acts with an object that does not fire itself. The news media will frame specific stories to run an agenda. I wonder why they don't run stories about 8 deaths daily in Chicago? It's called propaganda and selective in its application.
Is anybody else getting really fucking tired of this shit?

done by the blast from the shotgun. Maybe I am wrong but I really doubt that he expected the result that he got. I heard on the radio that they are conssidering charging the 11 year old as an adult. What a horror story for everyone involved.

And I don't doubt for a second that things have not improved over the last couple of years. Nothing to see here.

And who really puts much stock into the Harvard/UCLA study that concluded:

"For 15 year olds to 24 year olds, the firearm homicide rate in the United States was 42.7 times higher than in the other countries."

Nonsense! Gimme my guns!

B... How does that graph pan out per capita?
Completely the fault of the parents
Bockman : 10/8/2015 10:21 pm : link
for not storing the firearms and ammo properly.

But of course the BBI Liberal Brigade will blame the usual suspects.
Laws should be in place for the prosecution of those who willingly
Knineteen : 10/8/2015 10:30 pm : link
or negligently provide access to weapons, where a crime is committed...something similar to the Felony Murder Rule.

Obviously these tragedies can't always been prevented, but it's not unreasonable to put heat on those who are too cavalier with their gun ownership.

The US is #1 in gun ownership per capita in the world... Something like 112 per 100 citizens. Beating countries like Serbia and Yemen considerably.

If you're oddly referencing a "developed country" argument I will happily bow out because that is the height of absurdity.

But you definitely get the benefit of the doubt. No question. So there it is.

One thing that is encouraging is that the rate of

I would have no problem if we were to restrict semi-auto and larger round capacity weapons but at least there is improvements.
