Coughlin's Corner: Sunday Night matchup vs. 49ers

FYI.
The Coughlin Corner: Sunday Night matchup vs. 49ers - ( New Window )
Clearly my favorite Q and A..
Big Blue '56 : 10/9/2015 8:37 am : link
A few things of interest:

1-The meeting with the officials beforehand is great stuff..

2-"If you think about the phrase we’ve been using – ‘So what? Now what?’ - it applies to whatever last week was, it’s over. Now the idea is to keep going, to continue, to develop, to embrace any challenge that comes your way. And they’re all very specific, but they’re all very different.”

3-coin toss and take the ball again?

Coughlin: “Probably not. Probably not, although you have to understand that everything in this game is so calculated. When you defer, what you really want to have happen is score at the end of the first half, score at the beginning of the third quarter. That’s incredible how important that is.”

Why it took him so long to "get this" I find hard to understand, imv
Should say,

clearly my favorite Q and A each week..He opens up more, imo
Part of the coin toss question was cut off when I copied it..

I find it fascinating that he's always received and now all the sudden he always defers.

he has made several radical changes this year that have worked well - to my eye, the new practice schedule has = more gameday intensity. we've out-energized everyone so far

meeting with officials on the field:

He didn't mention one important issue that is asked at every HS and college game. The referee always asks the HC if all players are legally equipped with all safety equipment and if there are any special tape or wrap jobs they need to look at and rule on.

Maybe they don't do that at NFL games, but it's done at both HS and the college level. If the HC answers that all are legally equipped and they later notice a violation, it results in an unsportsmanlike call on the bench.

I'm a little curious to know if he just didn't mention or if they don't ask the question.
I've said all along, the one "beef" I had with

TC was his opting not to defer if he won the toss

I like deferring. Scoring a TD to start the second half could really change the momentum of the game.

One constant about Coughlin is that he is always looking to improve and adapt. For all the talk about how much of a hard-ass and how stuck in his ways he is, the 2015 Coughlin is very different from the 2004 or even 2010 Coughlin.
Definitely check out the video in that article

We’ve only had four starts inside our 20. Our opponents have had 18. That’s a big difference, a big field position impact.

interesting question and whether bench is given USConduct penalty. If the question is posed, I'm guessing it would most often relate to arm/wrist casts and wraps, or any protruding metal.

Your question is obligatory prior to the start of every HS soccer match: "will your players be legally and properly equipped at kickoff?" (the legal and proper pertain to two different classes of violations). The first violation results in a caution (yellow card) to the coach; each subsequent caution goes to the player. This of course has quite a different impact in soccer than in American football (a player's second caution for whatever reason and he is sent off and the team has to play a man down).
I've always been a fan of deferring

Mostly because the advantage of knowing you get the ball to start the second half. That's a nice advantage but I like TC's idea to score at the end of first half AND beginning of 2nd.

Response from Pat Hanlon:

1) The head trainer submits a list of any players who have casts to the officials prior to the game.

2) The uniform and equipment is standard. There is a poster in every locker room detailing the uniform. If a player is not in compliance with the uniform, he can be removed from the game until he is (depending on the nature of the issue), or if the issue is appearance, the player is warned via the equipment staff and/or fined.

In other words, the staff in charge of those respective areas handles the communication with the officiating crew.

thanks to you and Pat.

I've often wondered if the procedure was the same or different.

Actually, I only know about D3, D2 and HS. I don't know if the procedure is the same in D1.

We ask that question in the pregame conference in high school girls' softball. It has always been emphasized in our preseason clinics that it is for liability reasons. The idea is that if an injury occurs due to a violation of this, you have shifted the blame to the coach who has made the promise. We do pre-game inspect that the bats are legal and all helmets meet all requirements. (The most common violation is helmets missing chin straps that have generally fallen off in the equipment bag. This is easily remedied.)

A violation, and the coach is ejected since he or she has let it be known that all are properly equipped.
