good thing about a short series is you only need to win 3/5. God forbid they go down 0-2 (I'd personally feel pretty close to "done") they still would only have to win 3 games in a row. I'm not into sports betting but this one seems too close to call. Wouldn't be surprised at any potential result. If I had a gun to my head I'd say Dodgers in 5 but who knows?
Normally Id agree
ZGiants98 : 10/9/2015 3:53 pm : link
But that's where our rotation depth shines this year and we have the serious advantage. They got us in a 1 2 punch but we got them behind that. That's the Dodgers Achilles heal actually.

Certainly wouldn't be ideal to go down 0-2 but I wouldn't be looking for the Mets in the obituaries either if it happened.
Which bullpen do we see more of?

That is who loses IMO.
I agree it's a tossup in my mind...

Yeah, but the Achilies heal really won't come into play in a 5 game series, since at least one of Kershaw/Grienke (possibly both) will pitch twice.

Assuming Kershaw is Kershaw in Game 1, Game 2 will really be the key game - if they can steal that one from Grienke, things will look good. If not - well, that spells big trouble

crazy but 1 big play either way can really color how you feel about a player. Murphy with a huge error or a huge home run and suddenly the entire perception of the player changes.

It would if we were down in the series heading into game 4. They aren't going to pitch Kershaw on short rest in that game unless they have to. Exactly same situation as us with deGrom.
My perception of Murphy won't change no matter which way it goes
Torrag : 10/9/2015 4:06 pm : link
...beacuse for good or ill he can come out tommorrow and flip the script. That's just who he is. He's been a Met long enough to know he isn't going to change.
I think our best bet in a split
ZGiants98 : 10/9/2015 4:09 pm : link
Is winning tonight. Greinke has been every bit as good as Kershaw in 2015 and is the likely Cy Young winner. With nerves and excitement high, we might be able to score a few tonight before everyone settles in. Who knows though.

If Murphy hits a NLCS winning walk off homer your thoughts/memories of him won't be any different than if he commits a series ending error or baserunning mistake? One play can change a players legacy.
Dan I'd think fondly of him...

I feel the exact opposite. I think offering it is a no-brainer. Worst case is overpaying a solid above average regular for 1 season and "block" Herrera. That worst case would mean Murphy would be the first player ever to accept the QO. I think offering it is a no-brainer if the Mets have even semi-normal finances.

I'll risk losing the draft pick compensation...

...in order to have the surety of Murphy's money available for next season's free agent market. Can you imagine if Murphy accepts the QO and we can't pursue Cespedes or other significant players because of it? I don't trust the Wilpons wallet enough to chance it. Flores or Herrera will play 2B, it's time.

There is no realistic scenario where Daniel Murphy's 16 million is what keeps the Mets from keeping Cespedes/replacing him. If somebody said Murphy signed a 1 year extension last month at 12-13 million would anyone be thinking "oh no, Cespedes is walking!". They paid Dillon Gee, Parnell and Blevins 11.4 million this season.
No scenario?
Torrag : 10/9/2015 4:35 pm : link
You're experiences with this ownership must be far different than mine. Plus I just want Murphy gone. I've had my fill of knucklehead baseball. He's a one tool player with a head full of bad baseball wiring. It's past time to show him the door NLCS heroics or not.
Completely agree Dan

The Mets ownership is horrendous but all it takes is backloading Cespedes deal 1 season and that's the difference between Parnell/Gee/Blevins and the Murphy "raise". If Cespedes is allowed to walk, Daniel Murphy will have zero impact on that decision. Personally, I'd love to see Murphy turn down the QO, Mets get a pick and slide in Herrera but I'd also be fine with Murphy at 2b again next year.
Oh

See, you're arguing a point because you don't like hearing the truth in this situation. If Harvey didn't come off TJ surgery and throw more innings than expected, there could be a discussion about all of this and it would be an interesting debate. I'm not saying "See Seth is always right" because they are pitching him in game 3 and I think it's actually a good option regardless of his status. This is exactly what I was talking about in the Ranger thread...I'm not giving you an opinion and telling you I'm always right. I'm telling you that this is what the team has to do and has said they are doing from the very first moment they talked about a playoff rotation. Yet people still feel the urge to complain as though they decided to pitch the guy once (hopefully only need him once anyway) because they don't want him to pitch twice if needed.

You got your snide comment in as though I was shitting on your opinion, because either it bothers you when I say anything, or it bothers you that you and many other Met fans are pissing into the wind and getting angry at the team as though there was a choice and they screwed it up. As others have said, he can only pitch once this series and it sets up ideally with him going Game 3 at home, first playoff game in Citi in a pivotal game and he can be unavailable after that because he can't pitch again anyway. It's amazing that on the radio, the whole day was filled with callers trying to argue something that is not debatable.
I think there's a 90% chance
ZGiants98 : 10/9/2015 5:04 pm : link
Murphy turns it down and we get the first round pick.

1.) He's a family man and needs to think about his long term security
2.) His value only goes down a year from now one year older
3.) He's in his prime of his career right now and might have the added hype of a good playoff series
4.) He's probably the best 2B/3B on the market.

But like Dan said, if the worst case scenario is having a 2.5 WAR player around that can play multiple positions for another year, Im pretty damn good with that too. There will be injuries and Herrera will still get his chances.

All career numbers are SSS, but if your going go with that he should bat lower like flip cuddy with him. Murphy #4, i'm not happy about that.
Duda is 1-10 vs Kershaw

I think that's why Terry essentially flipped them. Flo is 3-6 on the bench. Not sure I like that but where do you play him?

Duda hitting 7th in front of Tejada. He's one of our best players, he's been hot, and he's hit lefties this year. You can't go off a handful of abats against kershaw as a barometer.

I agree on that premise but this is Kershaw, not just another lefty. Frankly, I dont think it matters if your lefty or righty with Kershaw, he'll get you out most likely.

Totally agree, Dan. At least a 90% chance he signs elsewhere and if he does come back, you get Murphy for another year without making a huge financial commitment.

That's a win-win situation

Tejada has good numbers against Kershaw. Collins has long eyed Tejada starting this game combined with all the back/strep stuff with Flores. Id personally rather have Flores at SS in this game. He's owned lefties this year. Not happy with the lineup at all but whatever.
Murphy has to play
ZGiants98 : 10/9/2015 5:34 pm : link
and he actually has very little split over his career (.271 against lefties for his career.) I just hate him hitting 4th. Call me old fashion but I want our big bopper there and thats Duda.

Hit .239 in the regular season for Jays with a 697 OPS

0-9 in postseason

What an awful deal for Toronto. Mets dodged a bullet not getting this guy.
I really like that lineup
Eric on Li : 10/9/2015 5:42 pm : link
Would prefer Flores but that's minor. Wright is best in the 2 hole not trying to do too much and Cespedes should get him some pitches to hit. Murphy consistently being the toughest out makes him a good fit to be the guy who comes up if they try to pitch around Yoenis.

Duda/TdA/Cuddyer in the back half all have boom/bust potential, but are where they should be because none have been consistent enough.

Yep. Well, not sure cost them the SERIES, but that was a brutally bad call.

If HOU/KC score holds up, home team will be 0-6 so far. Hopefully that continues in LA tonight...
Murph
SethFromAstoria : 10/9/2015 5:52 pm : link
Is a joke on the basepaths and in the field but those dumb plays are way more rare than his consistency at the plate. I'm not aiming my point at anyone in particular but the heavy criticism towards Murphy is particularly weird this season. He's by far and away the most consistent hitter on the team when it comes to putting balls in play, not striking out and clutch hits. He was very good in the second half as the team made the push towards first place. Not a well rounded player at all but there's really no one you want in the box with a RISP than Murph, because he just never strikes out.

Murph is not someone worth locking up long term
Eric on Li : 10/9/2015 5:55 pm : link
but no reason he couldn't do well in the Kelly Johnson role next year. He'd be expensive but it's better than losing him for nothing.

Yes his defense sucks. Yes his baseball IQ is terrible and his baserunning sucks. But he knows how to hit and he does it in the clutch. I'm fine with losing for a 1st round pick if someone else offers him a better contract but losing him for nothing would be stupid.
With apologies to Shakespeare!

Huge. Tulo sucks. Product of Coors. Old and deteriorating rapidly.
I'd argue Cespedes

has been just as streaky as anyone. So far he's come here and been ice cold, raging hot, then cold to end the year again. He also has a reputation for being very streaky before ever coming here.
