NFT: Blackhawks at Islanders Season/Home Opener

pganut : 10/9/2015 3:11 pm
Welcome back, friends. Tonight, the young, talented team in blue and orange makes the leap to not only a new building and new traditions, but to the realm of being acknowledged as one of the better teams in the league. Speaking with some of you, I am seeing both sheepishness and skepticism, and as well cautious optimism. There's cases to be made for both, but you also have to understand, by many metrics...this is a good team, period. It won't be easy A) against the Champs tonight/tomorrow, who are also coming in hot after dropping their opener and B) because of the injury bug affecting Halak and Hickey, necessitating a Strait appearance as well as Greiss likely playing 2 of the first 3 with an untested FA rookie to also get a game. You know what I say? Bring it. Bring the adversity. Challenges are good. And remember this: you need not panic if there's a stumble out of the gate. It's a looong season.

Turning to the game itself, there's a lot of festivities planned, not the least of which is a tribute to Al Arbour which should touch many folks. The banners are here. The real goal horn is here. The modernized arena is here. The light on the horizon we hoped for through all these years...it's here.

Your probable lines tonight: (F) - Lee-JT-Strome; Nelson-Grabbo-Kulemin; Bailey-Nielsen-Okposo; Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck. (D) - Leddy/Boychuk; de Haan/Hammer; Strait/Zid. As mentioned, Greiss gets the start. Let's hope he runs with it. Let Jaro recover fully before he comes back...we'll need him. Note: L2 and L3 may be flipped during the game.

Some opening night factoids: The Isles will be looking for their third straight Opening Night win, but are 3-7-2 in their last 12 Openers. Overall, the Isles are 11-21-10 on Opening Night (2-4-2 at home). A defenseman has scored the first goal of the season for the Isles in 5 of the last 6 seasons, including Johnny Boychuk last year. Mikhail Grabovski is one of six active players with an Opening Night hat trick.

For those looking for some reassurance, or merely the validation of the positive direction we're headed in, here's some perspective from Dan Rosen at NHL.com:
Quote:
My advice is stop worrying about three years from now if you're an Islanders fan. Embrace the team you have now. It's a playoff contender heading into a new building, a new era. Embrace Tavares and the superstar that he is. Trust Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss. Enjoy watching Nick Leddy, Johnny Boychuk, Travis Hamonic and Calvin de Haan. Watch for the development of Michael Dal Colle and Ryan Pulock. Believe that the defense got better with the addition of Marek Zidlicky. Hope for the best from Kyle Okposo and that he will stay an Islander. Look for more out of Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson. Appreciate Frans Nielsen for being one of the most underrated centers in the NHL. Enjoy the energy the Islanders get from Matt Martin, Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas.

Relax and enjoy being an Islander fan. The team is good and relevant again. Soak it in.

The city is ready for us:

Are you ready? I sure as hell am. Let's Go Islanders!

Your meters may overload
You can rest at the side of the road
You can miss a stride
But nobody gets a free ride
More than high performance
More than just a spark
More than just the bottom line
Or a lucky shot in the dark --
In the long run...

You can do a lot in a lifetime
If you don't burn out too fast
You can make the most of the distance
First you need endurance --
First you've got to last...

Confusion to the Murgos!...

Despite what you'll often hear, they will not be returning. At least not for 25 years. The arena they're building there absolutely can not support a professional sports team. Once it's built, I believe there's talks of the Isles playing 3-5 games that first year and seeing if they can make it a tradition... but even that is unlikely, IMO.

The article below sums it up nicely.

Quote:
Let's spell it out for Islanders fans, area residents, and Mangano: The New York Islanders aren't returning to Nassau. They'll play this year -- and for 24 more -- unless the arena's ceiling caves in, or those 8,000 season ticket holders disappear into a poof of smoke . . . in Brooklyn.

Most recently, Mangano told WFAN.com that he believes "we will see the return of the Islanders at some point." When Mangano trots out such talk, he's skating on thin ice. It's unkind to Islanders fans seeking hope. It's reckless and there's no basis for his comments.

Here's what we do know:

There's far more money to be made in NYC. Sponsorships and tickets are going for higher prices in Brooklyn than they did in Nassau -- and new Coliseum paint won't change that.

The team is about to have new majority owners, who based their valuation and their purchase on a home at Barclays -- not the Coliseum.

Developer Bruce Ratner, who is both majority owner of Barclays and tenant of the Coliseum, apparently is looking to sell his stake in Barclays, according to published reports. That could loosen the connection between the two.

Even when the Uniondale arena is renovated, it won't be built for a major league team -- and it won't come close to Barclays.

That's key. The Lighthouse Project, conceived by Isles owner Charles Wang a decade ago, would've included a $320 million renovated Coliseum. The Barclays Center cost $1 billion. Ratner is spending just $130 million on what amounts to a Coliseum wardrobe change.

My associative memory keeps trying to trick me into drawing parallels that aren't there between two situations that shouldn't be connected... but as a Yankee fan, I keep thinking about last year's loss in the same light as I think Edgar Martinez's double in 1995.

The players are taking the LIRR to home games, leaving in the morning for early skate and staying in a hotel for their rest time before the games.
BUT...............are they taking the train home after games at night? Will we be commuting alongside the boys?

Very very well done my friend...as per usual.

I think L1 will work well, especially if JT shoots more. Lee needs to set up his office and get comfy.

Very strong 3 lines. Obviously the 4th is strong and very important against teams like CHI.

Hamonic back makes it a very very strong top 4. But the problem is.....lol.

More than just a shot in the dark...in the long run!!
thanks and here's to an enjoyable season

2 of my feelings on the start of the season

it would make me feel a whole lot better if they had 1 more NOW player; one the that was a goal scoring threat. or even a power play specialist type that can ignite the PP unit. maybe someone steps up to be that player. I just think Tavares needs to play with more of a goal scorer than a play maker. Maybe Strome can surprise and get close to 30 goals.

i have a feeling if the right trade comes up KO is a goner. with the talent, depth and upcoming expiring contracts he may have priced himself out of the islanders future salary structure. he wants to be paid as the 2nd highest paid forward on the team and I'm not sure he is that. or is going to be that.

Ryan Strome's performance prior to the trade deadline this year (so about 70% of the season) is going to go a long way in determining what the Islanders are willing to pay Okposo.
I feel strongly
pganut : 10/9/2015 5:02 pm : link
That the "NOW" player is Strome. He has all the hallmarks (junior career as evidence) of having elite playmaker talent. I think this is the year he takes the leap, and I have no problem predicting that he'll be an all star within the next 2 seasons, this one included. It isn't a stretch to think that a full year of L1 cohesion will result in some very lofty numbers for all 3.

He has the talent to do so

I believe if he shoots more this year, it's a real possibility. If guys like Boyes and PAP can pot 20+ riding shotgun with JT, I think Strome brings more than they do/did.

I'm still not buying him as a 1st line winger on a team that some have picked to challenge for the conference finals. I hope I'm wrong. I think he's a good player but I'm just not sure of him as a 1st line player just yet.

5j...remember, he bet on himself coming into last season after refusing the Isles' QO. He felt if he showed he's part of the solution, he'd get rewarded. And he went out and did just that, and remember, wasn't paired with JT out of the gate. I think he's very much a key component of L1 and as JayB points out, has shown a willingness to get to the dirty areas and also has a deft touch on deflections. I believe Lee knows how good he has it to pair with JT and Stromer and now that he's comfortable with his role as well as his contract, we see him also take that big step this season. Nice to have a skilled line who are 25-25-22 in age respectively. I'll buy you the beer of your choice if we don't see at least 25 goals from Lee this year.

Well, you and I are in the camp that he improves upon his 14-15

I believe he scores at least 25, emphasis on at least. He wasn't moved full time to JT's wing till February. A full year with 2 stellar linemates should mean a big uptick. I think there are certainly folks who don't have as much belief in his abilities.

Personally, Im not a fan of bringing back almost the same exact team. The change in backup goaltending looks like a positive so far but other than that we replaced 1 old offensive dman with another old offensive dman. I dont like guys becoming buddy buddy and comfortable. I wanted petrov playing, i wanted pulock playing and I wouldnt have minded a trade of okposo, bailey or frans. Hopefully they just gotta get going and playing a tough team doesnt help. Time will tell

Almost, a couple of times. KO needs to earn the big dollars he wants.
KO
Fish : 10/9/2015 10:11 pm : link
needs to bury that.
Well, I'm excited to see what we can do in the OT
pganut : 10/9/2015 10:13 pm : link
But also scared shitless of what CHI might trot out there...Toews, Kane, Teruvainen, Panarin...some serious talent there.
Strome better not lose Kane agaiin.

Grab a point in a hard forught game. Not the optimal outcome, but a start to build on. There was a lot of good, but certainly a lot to improve on. Eighty one more to go, boys.
But it is funny how the NHLN wants to fellate Toews
pganut : 10/9/2015 10:21 pm : link
It was a Kane pass deflected in by Boychuk, but if they feel Toews scored, not much to say.
Battled back twice.

I can't wait to see the power play percentages in OT. I'll bet there's goals on 75% of the OT power plays.

They were not over matched at all. I didn't think Chicago really had any good chances the whole 3rd period

Suck it.
Not a fan of this 3-on-3
MetsAreBack : 10/10/2015 12:10 am : link
It's better than the shoot out but at least in shootout a team didn't get an equivalent to a regulation win as the Hawks got tonight and Tampa did last night

Looking forward to a fun series boys. May we meet in May and not late April please Lets both have a little fun first please

similarities from this team to last seasons team. Similar mistakes, breakdowns, shots wide of net and most important, had a good period and still losing.

Look no further than the moron behind the bench.

Why should it be any different than last year? Chicago gained an extra guy making it a 4-3, not a 3 on 2

Some thoughts on my experience last night.
Mike in Long Beach : 10/10/2015 11:07 am : link
I was in section 209, so the upper deck.

During intermission it was MORE crowded than the coliseum and more chaotic. As bad as the coliseum could get, the bathroom lines and the food lines were all distinct and obvious. But last night, there was a liquor bar right next to the bathroom which is just unbelievably silly. The halls are very tight, and all the lines to sort of merge into each other... amidst the chaos of people trying to get by, too. This led to two separate fights breaking out between strangers within 10 feet of me. It was ugly.

The crowd was late arriving and quiet in the first period, but was roaring in the 2nd and 3rd. Unfortunately, much of our enthusiasm was lost in the high ceilings. No matter how loud we get, this place will never rock like the barn.

I say all this with the caveat that I did not go in there wanting to hate the place. I want to love this building, but I just don't right now.

Some positives... I will say, the staff at Barclays is way better than any other stadium/arena in the New York area. You walk and people great you "Welome to Barclay's" and they actually smile. You don't really get that anywhere else. The people who work the concessions are oddly nice and chipper too.

Also, the pre-game experience is going to be better here, and I don't mean because as a New Yorker I have a shorter commute. The area around Barclay's is lively and all about the Islanders prior to the game. If you ever try and make it to a game, definitely make an attempt to get in an hour early if you can. Tons of restaurants and bars filled with die hards chanting Let's Go Islanders.

The logistics are going to be worked out eventually, but I'm very skeptical if the place will ever be as energetic as the coliseum. Perhaps there are things they can do with the acoustics to better bounce the roar back down to the ice, but even if there is, I highly doubt this is a priority.

Overall, it's hockey. It's the Islanders. It's great. But there are elements missing that I had taken for granted. They simply don't make 'em like the coliseum anymore.
One last thing
Mike in Long Beach : 10/10/2015 11:12 am : link
This may sound petty, but I swear once you experience it you'll agree. I'm going to bust my ass hard leaving my seat at some point this year. There's very little room to walk by the fans sharing the row with you when you need a beer or a bathroom break... and that's OK.

The problem is that the cup holders are essentially on the ground. The seat in front of you is much lower than I'm used to, and that's great for viewing the game of course, but the cupholders are attached to that same seat. They are at foot level. I nearly fell 3 times by tripping over the damn things.

Again, I know it sounds silly, but you'll see it when you get there. I liken it to trying to walk barefoot on a beach where there are a lot of broken shells. You have to be very careful with each step.
I just did a quick google and I see I'm not the only one, lol...
Mike in Long Beach : 10/10/2015 11:15 am : link
For a Nets game...

There are cup holders on the floor of the aisle in front of each seat, and the seat backs of the next row are ankle high. With 20 seats to a row it makes for a lot of precarious shuffling.

These nosebleed seats on the sideline actually afford a very good view of the court, but you are more likely to suffer the nosebleed from falling over several rows while carrying food and drinks and trying to edge back to your seat without tripping over the cup holders.

While not ideal situation wang and ratner made something work. Worse case would have been none of us ever seeing a live islanders game again if they moved to Quebec or KC. With that in mind we accept Barclays.
Brooklyn islanders

Brought out all the a listers for opening night. Some anthem from Alexa ray Joel. Rumor is they asked eddie money but he was playing at the bar at resorts world and wouldn't cancel so they picked her up on the way over
Rangers fans are so clever!!

Too bad that can't take the team to the next level! But hey, you always have the "we made it further than you" consolation prize to hang your hat on. Kudos!!
These new arenas
theold5j : 10/10/2015 12:11 pm : link
Are not built for acoustics so no new building will be as loud as an old one. The ceilings are so high. Well just have to deal with that. It will be loud, just not NVMC loud.

Oh I totally agree. Like I said, at the end of the day I'm watching islanders games. Ultimately I'm going to be happy. Just sharing my experience. All I really care about at the end of the day is a win.

I wouldn't even bother. Look at who's commenting. Fluffy? Who's next, Stealing Society? The castoffs from the Rangers threads come here because they're ignored over there, so no reason not to treat them the same here. And Brooklynders? That's cute; no really, it is. One game in and some are already scraping bottom on their wit-meter. At least show some regular season form.

This is spot on. I'm all for a good trolling session from the quality Ranger fans over there (a bit of an oxymoron, but they do exist). But you said it perfectly. This guy's ignored over there, so he comes over here to display the type of intellect that rendered him invisible over there.

I also don't get the Brooklynder thing. Is it bad to play in Brooklyn? I think it's pretty cool.
Also note...

Tonight's game thread has already been posted. Feel free to post updates as lineups are announced. I gotta run for most of the afternoon, off to coach my sons in their football game. Hoping to make it to 2-0 on our season...later!
