My router is about 5 years and I'm thinking about replacing it. I called Verizon and was told that I must buy from them and am limited to what they sell meaning I can't buy from anybody else. It took me a long time to get thru to a representative and she didn't seem to be that sharp. Does anybody know what the story is re buying your own router with Fios?
I needed it because my kids don't watch tv, they watch stuff on their laptops (personal tv).
You can buy them and don't need to rent them. Most people spend more on fucking starbucks in a month than the router.

They charge $10 a month. It is bullshit. Tell them to pick it up and get your own. I got a really good one but I dont have the name of it right now.

That was never an option and if that is the case and it is reasonably priced then buy it. Yes, people spend more on other things in a month but why pay $600 in five years when you can spend much less?
I think you can get it cheaper on Amazon or ebay
That said you can use whatever router you want, but you have to ,ale sure the ethernet port is actived the ONT. I know some of the newer installs VZ uses MoCa connections (cable wire) and not ethernet. The VZ modems support Moca, non VZ routers do not.
Various connection options are explained here:

Verizon was full of shit when they told you that you had to rent from them.
When I told them that I had switched and had to return the cable boxes, they told me that they'd give me a free new fast router. I told them too late, they should have done that first, and that their behavior left bad will.
So I guess moral of the story is threaten to drop them and they'll probably give it to you for free.
