deGrom
Stufftherun : 10/10/2015 1:04 am : link
was absolutely fantastic especially when he had to be. Big HR by Murph to get things started and a huge base knock by DW to make it a seemimgly insurmountable lead. Great job by Familia to shut the door and now it's time for Thor to come thundering off that mound. Get greedy and take game 2 boys!
Absolutely fantastic

Clippard couldn't resist causing us stress
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:09 am : link
but Familia is actually damn great.

DeGrom though...holy shit man. Guy is completely cool, calm and collected like its easy. Such a good feeling to take that game.

And of course Captain Fantastic.

For the Met/Ranger fans....not a bad night eh?!?
Guys

HUGE 1-0 lead

This pitching staff is insane
Eric on Li : 10/10/2015 1:12 am : link
Familia and Degrom were after thoughts entering last season. Think about that.

Conforto needs to be starting every day in left from this point forward. Big game for Thor tomorrow. Obviously it's a must win for LA, hopefully Noah took notes on what worked tonight and what didn't (anything in Cuddyers direction).
I'm worried
sshin05 : 10/10/2015 1:15 am : link
about degrom, IF the mets are down, and you bring back degrom on short rest, it will be hard to let degrom go 7 innings.

it's hindsight but the way both pitchers were k'ing ppl, would have it made more sense to start flo instead of tejada?

No because Collins entire rational for Tejada was that he had great numbers against Kershaw. Defense had nothing to do with it. I disagree with that logic but I will say that huge atbat in the 7th was one of the keys to this win.
What a fucking stud performance.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/10/2015 1:19 am : link
Looked Kershaw right in the fucking eye and said "Follow this."
I'd like to see Conforto
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:19 am : link
but I think it was just a particularly awful night for Cuddyer. Would not be surprised in the least to see them go back to him tomorrow. And wouldn't be overly shocked if he had a big hit or two.

And somehow he wasn't even the worst OF tonight.
I don't think they can risk
pjcas18 : 10/10/2015 1:22 am : link
Cuddyer's defense in what just might be another close game with Greinke vs Thor.

I wouldn't say Familia and deGrom were
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:22 am : link
Afterthoughts. They were high upside arm prospects of which we had a ton of. I think at one point we had 20 arms or so throwing 95-100 mph in our system. You could pretty much guarantee one or two were going to work out and it's a sound way to go about building a system actually.

It's already confirmed Conforto is starting tomorrow. Cuddyer will absolutely get other chances in this postseason however.
I don't remember
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:25 am : link
if he really was ever bad this year in the field. Obviously those two misplays were ugly and if not for the domination of Jake, could have been a disaster. But was he bad otherwise this year? Don't think he was.

Props have to go to Grandy as well. Guy was excellent tonight again and has a superb season. Most consistent player on the team and a bounce back to silence the "We shouldn't have signed him" crowd.

People fly off the handle real easy here. Cuddyer maybe made one or two gaffes over the whole season. I can remember two funny throwing errors. He's hardly a huge liability.
Is it confirmed?

Well thanks for your opinion but Cuddyer is better

I would have played
pjcas18 : 10/10/2015 1:30 am : link
Conforto from the beginning. I feel like he gives the team the best chance to win.

And what Cuddyer did defensively in the past is kind of irrelevant, he very easily could have cost the team the game tonight looking like he'd never played OF in his life.

Collins was asked about it prior to the game and said Conforto would get the start against the righty tomorrow. I also think the idea the entire time was to platoon them in the postseason so it's really not a big surprise.
Yeah I just think he had one of those
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:32 am : link
games where he's just bad in every aspect, but we won the game. If they play him again I won't flip out. One of Yoenis, D'Arnaud or Cuddyer could easily have a bounce back game. With a win, no need to panic.
Cuddyer misjudged
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:33 am : link
Two balls in a foreign park that he isn't used to. One bounced out of his glove and the other fooled the entire park including the batter. Yes they were bad but every player has a bad day defensively once in a while.
Not to be a downer
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:34 am : link
But Cespedes has looked awful. On the flip side we are proving we can win without him. He's virtually been an automatic out though. Hope he picks it up tomorrow.
I won't flip
pjcas18 : 10/10/2015 1:35 am : link
out, just probably wouldn't play him unless conforto looks lost.

Familia is a beast. I was concerned with the bullpen, specifically the 7th/8th inning, so I hope Clippard was just a blip tonight and they don't need Familia to pitch more than an inning too often.
wouldn't have expected him to break out against Kershaw anyway

I forgot
NJGiantFan84 : 10/10/2015 1:38 am : link
What it felt like to watch your team win in the post season. Its glorious. Havent felt like this since 2011.

How about David Wright. For all the BS about how he isnt clutch, this should shut em up. Keep it up captain. I couldnt be happier for somebody.

Degrom, enough said. But ill expand anyway. Outpitched Kershaw in LA when Kershaw was very good. Not an easy task. We got ourselves one.

And as much as some people love to Hate Murph, he is a solid baseball player. He is at his best when it matters most. I hope we re-sign him. You dont find guys like him as easily as people think. Ill take the mistakes as long as he keeps coming up big in the clutch. He crushed that ball.
That's Baseball, Susan!
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/10/2015 1:38 am : link
@Buster_ESPN
In regular season, Kershaw has allowed only eight HRs to LH hitters in 483 at bats since start of '13. Postseason: 3 in last 3 starts
Super win.
Phil in Joisey : 10/10/2015 1:39 am : link
deGrom was fabulous.
Cuddyer to play against a righty? No freakin' way! By the way those two gift doubles that Conforto would have caught really jacked up deGrom's pitch count.
yeah Cespedes
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:39 am : link
is in one of those Super Slumps where not only are you not getting hits, you look so bad it appears like you're not trying.

He did almost hit a wallscraper though.
Outside of the deGrom performance...
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:39 am : link
I am SO impressed and proud of these hitters and the way they battled Kershaw especially in the 7th. We've seen what our hitters are like when they are slumping and they are flailing away at everything. Not tonight. Great atbat after great atbat, fouling off good pitches and not swinging at anything outside of the zone with a questionable stikezone to boot. Wright got the hit but it would have never happened without Duda,Tejada, and Granderson. Great bunt by deGrom too.

He did miss a HR by six feet. But he had some poor at bats. He isnt great against lefties. Coincidence that his performance subsided around the time Uribe went down?
Pedro is great on the postgame show

Great analysis. Says Degrom is going to get better. Awesome when he was laughing at the Dodgers on the replay.
If Syndergaard repeats
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:44 am : link
this performance and outduels Greinke the earth might shake. The world is finally getting a taste of what we've been so excited for.
The break
SethFromAstoria : 10/10/2015 1:49 am : link
on Kershaw's breaking balls is the most amazing I've seen I think. The velocity and sudden snap of those pitches is just nuts and seems literally impossible to hit.

He doesnt even need to outduel him. Just ieep it close, go 7 and get into that Dodger bullpen. ill be happy with a chance to win the game in the later innings. Because we go home 1-1 at worst.

When I see it live I am yelling at them to lay off those. Then when they slow it down you see how nasty it is and how it appears to be a strike most times before dropping out. His motion is so odd also. Must drive batters nuts

Yeah I wasn't saying what we needed to do to win. I was saying what a performance like that would do for his perception. Im pretty sure the whole world just witnessed deGrom out dominate Kershaw. Would be crazy if Syndergaard did it to Greinke too.

Great win!!!...a few observations
Torrag : 10/10/2015 1:54 am : link
Having a professional like Granderson on this club is a tremendous asset. You get a QAB every time no matter the circumstances.

Wright is The Captain. Fiery barking at the ump over his ridiculous zone yet cool and clutch under pressure.

The umps strike zone tonight was a joke but at least he called a consistently shitty game for both clubs.

As expected Murphy is the X Factor. A clutch HR and of all things unpredicted a pick it play defensive gem at 1st base. You never know what this pea brain will do day to day but he was worth his weight in gold tonight.

As for the Dodgers Mattingly 'spit the bit' tonight not Kershaw. When you have the 'best pitcher in baseball' battling with a reasonable pitch count you let him sink or swim on his stuff and his nerve. Don't tell me Kershaw's past difficulties in the post season wasn't a factor either. It was clearly in his managers mind or he would have pitched to Wright who he had handled well after the early walk.

It was a bad decision to start Cuddyer over Conforto. Why? You can expect a low scoring contest with this pitching matchup where defense will be at a premium. Cuddyer is a JAG fielder while Conforto has been stellar on D since he came up. Second reason...Cuddyer has been a lousy hitter for most of this season and hasn't had a pulse at the plate in months. Lefty rigthy matchup be damned this is the kind of decion where you throw 'the book' out the window. Tejada I could at least argue for as he's a better glove than Flores but not Cuddyer. DeGrom did an incredible job when Cuddyer choked and put his pitcher under unnecessary pressure.

We can put a hammer lock on this series if Noah and our club can capitalize on the opportunity they've given themselves in game 2. Let's Go Mets!!!
Now
ZGiants98 : 10/10/2015 1:55 am : link
even more pressure is on the Dodgers. They are in an absolute must win now tomorrow. Meanwhile Thor can come out free and easy.
I read Mattingly lifted
pjcas18 : 10/10/2015 2:00 am : link
Kershaw in part because if the Dodgers lost game1 and he needs to bring Kershaw back for game 4 he didn't think he could if he left him in for more pitches.

TC already pretty much said because of the workload deGrom isn't coming back game 4 if needed.

no clue if that makes sense or not, but that's apparently some people's rationale.
