Defensive End

The_Taxman : 10/9/2015 6:39 pm
With Ayers and Selvie out, I think we need to sign a DE. This team is beyond thin at so many positions but DE is imperative in a Spags system. How are we going to get away with having 2 DEs for any amount of time? Not to mention we have 2 reliable WRs with any experience/NFL talent, and barely one TE. With all the cap room we have our lack of depth is appalling. I realize there's not much out there to sign but make a trade. Do something.

Will slide over Jenkins and use Kuhn at DT. I don't like it, but that's how it will go. Jenkins has been very good at the rotational role at DT with Hank and Bromley. But fact is, they're thin at DE and they probably aren't comfortable starting Odiggy there quite yet.
It's Too Bad Kennard Is Out Too
Trainmaster : 10/9/2015 6:43 pm : link
We might have seen more 3-4 Hybrid or even pure 3-4 looks.
Ayers, Selvie and Kennard will be back...

hopefully. So why sign someone off the street who doesn't know the system and probably wouldn't play?

won't happen, it's friday.
mirwin : 10/9/2015 6:51 pm : link
they would have Saturday to learn anything. Any impact would be minuscule. Bringing up Brad Bars, Hughes, or even James Morris would've been the better move. But it's far too late, they would've had to by like Thursday for anything to actually happen.

have four guys on the roster right now - not counting Selvie and Ayers - who play defensive end.

had quite a few snaps last week.
This team has ten defensive linemen on the active roster...

...plus Bars and Hughes on the practice squad, Ellis on the speed-dial shuttle and Pierre-Paul under franchise tender. You want to sign a DE off the street to fill in? Who? Why?
We fans tend to want to DO SOMETHING.
81_Great_Dane : 10/9/2015 7:45 pm : link
And when the GM doesn't do something, we tend to pop off with REESE IS AN IDIOT and WHY IS OUR GM ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL? stuff. I've done it myself. But I try not to do it anymore

The pros are faced with the complexities of doing something. The GM has to think about the cap. The coaching staff has to think about integrating a guy into the system. Then there's the question of whether a guy you might want to sign is in shape, and whether he can pass a physical, and the value of signing a marginal player to fill a short-term need. Remember how bad it was when the Giants had to play street free agents at linebacker late in the season about 10 years ago? In mid-season, when you sign a street free agent, you generally get someone who plays like a street free agent.

So sometimes we fans need to remind ourselves: Don't just do something, stand there!

Just for fun though, here are a few intriguing DE names...

...on other teams' practice squads:

Michael Catapano (Princeton), Jets via Chiefs
Lavar Edwards (LSU), Cowboys via Titans/Bears
Larry Webster (Bloomsburg), Lions

Slim pickings out there, honestly.
But if you sign a guy of the PS,
81_Great_Dane : 10/9/2015 7:58 pm : link
you have to keep him on the 53 for the rest of the season, right?

So that's a pretty significant commitment, especially considering the # of injuries the Giants have had. They really haven't had the luxury of stashing prospects on the inactive list.
Takes two to make a trade
JonC : 10/9/2015 9:32 pm : link
And when you're the desperate one, you overpay.

OO will make an impact, next man up and hold the fort, there's no trade coming.
There could be some 3-4 Hybrid action with the active players
Ivan15 : 10/9/2015 9:42 pm : link
Odi and Moore could have some skills that we haven't seen yet. Jenkins and Hankins could both play DE in a 3-4.
Trade whom? For whom?
Jimmy Googs : 10/10/2015 7:25 am : link
As much as I agree we need one, I think we have a bigger problem finding someone to give up versus obtaining. And don't even think about giving up a pick.

Take a look at the injury list, we need every healthy body left to get thru a game these days, and are ridiculously thin at WE, TE and Secondary to boot.

But I don't disagree we should be looking if we keep winning and some teams keep losing.
81_Great_Dane: No, you don't have to commit for the full season.

Nope, more like three-four weeks. You can actually waive him earlier, but he still gets three pay checks.

Jenkins is as much of a DE as I am an astronaut. If you are comfortable with Wynn,Moore, and Owa more power to you. I wish I was that confident.
I agree that Jenkins in no way should be considered a DE
BlueHurricane : 10/10/2015 12:27 pm : link
He is terrible there.

Jared Allen was gotten for a 6th round pick which is essentially nothing. Even the current version of Allen would be our best or 2nd best DE.
