FB/TE James Casey

Big Rick in FL : 10/9/2015 9:59 pm
I saw he was recently released by the Broncos. I haven't seen him play much, but from what I've read he's a pretty good blocker at both FB & TE. Anybody on here have any opinions on him? I'd assume he's a better fit then Will Tye for the Daniel Fells roll. Interested to hear some opinions on him. Thanks!
The only advantage Casey has over Tye is experience

The flip side of that is that he is old.

He's not that old (31) and as far as advantages go, having experience is pretty important one. Whether or not that's his only advantage is hard to say given how little we really know about either of them, but while Tye went undrafted (he wasn't even a priority free agent, as he had to go work out for teams before being signed), Casey was drafted by both the NFL (5th round) and MLB (7th round)

Here is Boylhart's draft profile on Casey...
Quote:
James Casey TE Rice

STRENGTHS
James is multi-talented and might be the best all around athlete in this draft. I believe he has the athletic talent and intelligence to play on either side of the ball and become an impact player. He has excellent hands, runs very good routes and is a leader on the field. He makes players around him better. He can read defenses and understands situational football. James reminds me a lot of Anthony Gonzales (TE Chiefs). He can run routes and catch the ball down field like a WR. He has excellent run-after-catch abilities and is elusive enough to be used on special teams as a punt returner by his college team.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
James has a weakness. I believe he will become weak and immovable if Kryptonite is brought on to the field. I do -- I truly believe that!

TALENT BOARD ROUND 1
Brandon Pettigrew is an excellent blocker who can catch the ball, but has questionable character issues. Chase Coffman is an outstanding receiving TE who may, or may not, develop into a good solid blocker. Ryan Purvis is the most complete TE, but does lack speed down the field. James Casey is the best TE in this draft, bar none. I do not care that he plays for Rice and the competition level might be in question, I'm telling you that James is the best TE because that's what I see on the film. He is strong, fast, has the best hands and can block in space. He can be used as an inline blocker, he has excellent feet and great hands, he's intelligent and a leader. He could be used inside the red zone as a WR because he has the talent and agility to catch the fad route. He could also be used in the middle of the field as a WR in a West Coast Offense system. Because of his strength, his ability to be an excellent in line blocker is very good and he can pass block with the best LT in this draft. The truth is that you don't waste talent like James blocking -- that's just crazy! I would suspect that after the combine, James will be talked about more and more and will move up everyone's boards.

Yeah, I know, he didn't live up to Boylhart's hype, but he is not someone that lacked talent. The problem isn't that Casey is no better than Tye (in all likelihood he's a lot better), the problem is that neither Tye nor Casey really fit the need the Giants have for a TE who can help in the run-game as well as the pass-game. That's what they lost when Fells went down. They already have a pass-catching TE in Donnell.
Whoa did Boylehart overrate Casey....

What Milton wrote re Casey being more a Donnell type of TE than a Fells replacement is true.

Beyond that, Donnell had about as many receptions last year as Casey had in his 6 year career, and JC has a knee.

Pass.
I have always liked him

was pissed when the Eagles got him after he left the Texans.

Not sure what is left in the tank.

catch a football? If yes, then, get him out there!
It's not catching a pass its blocking

That losing Fells has the biggest impact on. He was the best blocking TE. And going into the season there was a lot of concern re OL and needing help.

So sometimes the story is not what happens. Maybe they feel OL has started to gel and they can go more pass catching at TE. Keep in mind Tye was behind Cunnigham. I think Cunningham may return this week.

Or maybe they feel the blocking drop off isn't that drastic with Tye. Both Cunnigham and Tye have barely played although I was surprised how many snap Tye for in his first game.

These 2 kids are young, hopefully hungry and know the syste,. Barring an impact player being available I think I'd rather see what they can do before getting another player at TE.

not sure if you are kidding -- but Whilock is not ideal for a TE the way the Giants use them -- a TE in the Giants system needs to be taller to create size mismatches in coverage
