@Andy_Benoit: 49ers Film: Kaepernick’s WRs losing patience with him. See it in body language of Boldin and Smith. QB blowing too many routine pocket plays

@Andy_Benoit: 49ers Film: Kaepernick did not make many plays with his legs. If that’s going to be the case, then theoretically, why have him out there?

@Andy_Benoit: 49ers Film: Kaepernick success on read-option. Ball deception defeated unblocked Packers, who by design were slow-playing it.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: 49ers did not do enough to help WR’s. Too much isolation. Aside from shallow crossers, there weren’t man-beater concepts.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: 49ers had some success with crossing routes that naturally defeated Packers man coverage concepts.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: Vernon Davis was out this game, that hurt. 49ers have been built around multi-TE packages this yr, they didn’t have that dimension.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: Packers OL very sturdy in pass pro. 49ers have struggled to generate activity with a four-man rush this season.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: Besides bust on Jones 36 yds, 49ers back seven was sound in coverage, very heavy on basic zone concepts.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: 49ers early on defended Packers run game well with just a 6-man box. Their DL won.

@Andy_Benoit: 49ers Film: Wilhoite and Bowman both looked good vs. the run.

The Giants gave Schichtle Mickey Mantle's locker at Yankee Stadium...it may have been too much for him...

One of his teammates at Wichita State would have wanted the spotlight:

"From 1954 to 1959 I went to maybe 15 games. People in the neighborhood would take me or give us the tickets. I didn't go to the overtime game in 1958, but I remember being with a bunch of kids that day who went out to Lake Hopatcong, which was frozen over. They went ice skating, but I sat in the car listening to the game. When the Giants lost, I died.''

As an all-Missouri Valley Conference linebacker at Wichita State, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round for the 1964 season.

''Four other guys on our team got drafted,'' he said. ''Henry Schichtle, a quarterback, was drafted by the Giants, I was sick. I thought, why couldn't it be me?''

The 1964 Giants went 2-10-2 and was the start of the Dark Ages
Steve Filipowicz : 10/10/2015 10:55 am : link
Rosey Grier (named after FDR) was traded for John LoVetere, who hurt his leg and retired after the 1965 season while Grierplayed as part of the Rams Fearsome Foursome.

Sam Huff was traded for Andy Stynchula and Dick James, neither one of whom evere did much with the Giants.

It was an old team with most of its stars in their early to mid 30s with few good young players to take their place.

However, it did have a rookie who turned out to be a great player: Homer Jones at WR, who IIRC still holds the NFL record for Yard Per Catch.
Also had the greatest Giants KR IMO in Clarence Childs.

Back then there was no Free Agency so that if you didn't draft well you were doomed to mediocrity or worse for a long time. Giants began a long stretch of poor drafting.

BTW forgot to mention that
Steve Filipowicz : 10/10/2015 10:59 am : link
Rosey Grier was one of those brave men who subdued Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy's assassin, and wrested the gun from him. A great Giant, a brave man to help subdue an armed gunman while being unarmed and a great American.

Rosey Grier was one of those brave men who subdued Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy's assassin, and wrested the gun from him. A great Giant, a brave man to help subdue an armed gunman while being unarmed and a great American.

Not to mention the "minister" who counseled the killer during his trial in '94

still have no idea how you do this, but it's fabulous.
The Grier trade after the 1962 season could have been a plus

If two things happened:

(1) LoVetere who made the Pro Bowl in 1963 had a severe knee injury in 1964. He made a couple of comeback efforts in 65 and 66 but was finished.

(2) With the draft choice the Giants received from the Rams in the trade the Giants selected Matt Snell FB from Ohio State in 1964 in the fourth round. He signed with the Jets instead and became one of the top FB's in the AFL.

If LoVetere stays healthy and the Giants sign Snell then the trade looks a lot better. Keep in mind that Grier only played three years in LA, retiring after the 1966 season.

Also if the Giants had signed Snell, no need to take a FB at the top of the 1965 draft...

The Giants made a lot of bad trades after 1961...but this one could have turned out to be something more...

True re '65 draft. Maybe we take Butkus or Sayers
Correct myself

Grier played four years in LA 63-66 not three but my premise still stands...

Another point, the second best player in the Huff trade was a lineman by the name of George Seals that the Giants drafted with their other fourth round selection in 1964. Seals went to the Bears were he started at G then later at DT into the 70's...given their needs on the line Seals would have helped the Giants.

So the trade was Huff and Seals to Washingtin for Stynchula, Dick James and a 1965 fifth round draft choice that the Giants used on a P named Frank Lambert...one justification for the trade the Giants wanted to get younger on defense...the Giants ability to evaluate young talent was slipping however...

The Giants thought they had two promising young LB's in Bill Winter and Jerry Hillebrand. Winter had gone from being a 18th round draft choice to a starter at LLB in 62-63...Hillebrand as a part time player intercepted 5 passes in 1963...no Giant LB has matched that total since...there was also a redshirt LB named Lou Slaby and Louis Guy who played capably when Tom Scott was injured in the 1963 Championship game with the Bears...

The problem was Winter had a bad knee and was never the same during the 64 season. He retired prematurely before the 65 season, Hillebrand was injured in the 64 preseason and was not suited to be a MLB something the Giants tried to make him into...

After leaving the Giants Hillebrand was a solid OLB in St. Louis and Pittsburgh...the Giants had trouble evaluating their LB's...as a rookie Olen Underwood of Texas started at OLB in 1965 then was waived and went to be a starting LB in the AFL, Ken Avery started as a rookie in 1967 and again in 1968, the Giants waived him and he became a starter with the Bengals for several years, Ed Weisacosky waived by the Giamts contributed with the Dolphins and Patriots...Henry Davis sent to Pittsburgh after spending two years in NY was a part of the early Steelers revival...

Even the LB's the Giants traded away brought a good value...Bill Swain one year off a serious knee injury was part of the trade that brought the Giants SS Bruce Maher, a third and fourth round draft picks, Tommy Crutcher after two years in NY brought a third round pick from the Rams...

Finally back to Schichtle, his Giant regular season career consisted of ten games active, one game played, no pass attempts, .although he was with the Giants and competed in two training camps...he was part of the less than memorable Gary Wood, Bob Timberlake, John Torok competition in 1965 that caused the Giants to trade for Earl Morrall before training camp was over. He later was in the Falcons camp and the CFL.
