Played his best game as a pro. Very noticeable out there and considering how most couldn't figure why he was on this team, he did well. For the guys who understands the X's and O's how do you think he played?
Exactly which ones did he miss? He completely held the point on his side and either made the tackle, assisted on it or turned the play back to the inside for someone else to clean up.
view the play of backups. You act like we should have the next LT on the sidelines waiting for an injury to play. Hell, Andy Headen was an amazing LB'er but was a backup because we have All-World LB's starting ahead of him. Herzlich is a backup and that is it. He isn't great but for holy hell, give him some credit as he knows where to be and did make some plays.
if he were great he would be starting. Unga was a joke last night. You want to make judgments, judge him. He was completely lost numerous times. Herzlich does what he can with his limited athleticism and speed.

but Herzlich is a solid football player and a very serviceable OUTSIDE linebacker.
He was awful in the middle, and exposed on most plays but since they moved him to OLB before last season, he has done much better. He sets the edge and makes some plays. He played well last night.

Haters gonna hate. Sigh
Blew contain pretty bad on one late run off left tackle by Hyde in the 4th and made a great play penetrating earlier in the game but missed the tackle for a ~5 yard loss and Hyde ended up reversing field and getting 2-3 yards.
Other than those 2 plays, I was pleasantly surprised by Herzlich and thought he did well at the POA.
Some good with the bad. But that is much better than
It's a consistent habit of his. I do not expect LT from a backup, but pointing out where he falls short as well as where he does ok is normal on this forum. It was one of his better games, especially out on the edge.
why people want to like Herzlich, I really do. But I don't understand how anyone can consider him a true NFL quality LB. People see him involved in a play or two and all of a sudden are posting threads that he played his best game as a pro. In reality he's one of the slowest LBers I've ever seen play and he takes absolutely brutal angles towards the ball. He's not good in coverage and is average (at best) stopping the run. It's a feel good story but he's simply not a good player.
the arguement has never been that he's a good player. He's a contributor on special teams and he's a good backup.
Where's the argument here.? We're lucky to have him. He knows the system, he plays hard, he's a great back up.
The naivete that says we don't have depth ...doesn't get it...Jerry and Newhouse (soon), Reynolds, Herzy, all these guys are less than starters and shouldn't be judged as starters. They are superb back ups who can step in and bring a degree of competency.
The critics want Kennard's back up to be as good as Kennard, by definition that's not happening by cap restraints you don't even want that happening. Now I know that's a concept and the critics can't handle concepts...but you actually couldn't afford to have great backups...not and pay Eli and your real stars..it's always about finite resources and priorities.

Great point! I was pleasantly surprised with his play last night. But you are so right, he is a backup and he did his job.
which Collinsworth highlighted. But, overall, I thought he was pretty bad. He got locked up with a blocker on most plays and was slow getting to ball carriers. Even the plays he made were from taking a good angle; he didn't actually tackle the ball carrier.
I watched him closely and anyone who says he was average or played poorly did not. He made several great plays in the running game where he didn't make the tackle but he pushed the OL or TE who was blocking him into the backfield disrupting the RB. It is evident that he was a poor fit at MLB as he has been effective at SLB. He is really an excellent run defender but he obviously struggles in coverage. He really has turned a corner since his move outside.
Back up and played very well the first half. He was great at setting the edge and made some nice tackles for losses. His weaknesses started to get exposed in the second half when they started throwing the ball more. He also isnt used to the conditioning involved with playing so many downs and I think it showed at the end.
But he had a very good first half. People will never get over his play from a few years ago, but he is solid against the run and a great sT guy which makes him a solid back-up regardless of people thinking every team has six starting caliber LBs.
He played well overall. He's a solid player. Nothing spectacular. He has his weaknesses which is coverage where he looks brutal at times. But on special teams, run defense, and being in position, he is a solid player. The hate for him, Kuhn, and Newhouse is pure idiocy. JT Thomas has been invisible and is just as slow as Herzlich for 4 times the money, yet nothing is said about that. But let's hate on a backup LB/special teamer who makes a mil. Lol. Like I said, pure idiocy.
there is no doubt about that....so he contains the edge by position, not because he overpowers the person in front of him.....
He did make some plays....he chased KAP to the left, and made him throw the ball away.....he made a few plays on runs...he was useless in pass defense, and he missed containing the edge several times...he is what he is.....
Did ok on some plays though.

yea i'm a hater. Watch the game.
HATER
I'm not going to give props to someone for an average performance.
JonC, how many LBs can recover after missing the angle.

Mixed. He got stoned by the TE a few times.

Banks then said, LOL, that he could talk to Herz for 5 minutes and get his issue resolved!! Thanks Carl!!
But he did say, he's a backup special teams player, and you're getting the most out of him that is possible.
But he had a very good first half. People will never get over his play from a few years ago, but he is solid against the run and a great sT guy which makes him a solid back-up regardless of people thinking every team has six starting caliber LBs.
