How bad is Odell Beckham hurt?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/12/2015 9:35 am
I felt much better when he came back in the game, but this blurb by Mike Garafolo is disconcerting...not sure if Garafolo is embellishing or not...

Quote:
Odell Beckham limped up the tunnel and toward the home locker room, gripping a game ball tight with one hand and using the other one to wipe away tears with the tips of his glove.

The New York Giants wide receiver grunted and sighed with each stride, with the noises a mixture of pain, celebration, frustration, exasperation and elation.

Beckham had just experienced the highs of scoring another touchdown, recording another 100-yard game and participating in another team victory. He'd also felt the twinge of another hamstring injury, one that appeared to be suffered during a vigorous end-zone celebration that left him limping and sidelined him for much of a tightly contested fourth quarter. (Beckham denied the injury happened during his dance and claimed it happened a few plays earlier.)

but he was also limping REALLY badly on the sideline right before he came in, and he looked fine when came in.

Anyone who's ever played football knows certain guys limp more emphatically than others for whatever reason.

I'd hate to think he hurt it celebrating. If so, ugh.
It's a hammy pull

and those take time to heal and ODB knows it. I think he's pissed because he realizes he's not going to be close to 100% for awhile (and may even miss some games). That, plus the frustration of it being the same injury that has dogged him forever, probably contributed to the emotion he was showing post-game.

Interesting. It could be either, but I'm guessing it was because we won based on this comment in his interview:

"It was definitely a great win and I was a little overwhelmed at the end."
I think its because
mdthedream : 10/12/2015 9:56 am : link
he made a team decision and not a business decision and put his helmet on to help the team win. You could see on the sideline he was struggling with wanting to go out onto the field. I was like put your helmet on the team needs you. So I am sure it was emotional esp seeing it worked out. He is a gamer and you can see he loves to play the game.
When he came into the game, the camera caught him with hands
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/12/2015 9:58 am : link
together praying. I've never seen that happen before and leads me to think he knew he was hurt and hoping it wouldn't get worse or go completely.
I watched him on the sidelines

in front of me at the game. He looked fine as he was sprinting back and forth...trying to convince the trainers to let him back in the game. IMHO he'll be ok for next week.
The thing that is a positive is that
ryanmkeane : 10/12/2015 10:00 am : link
trainers CLEARED him to go back into the game. If they hadn't cleared, we'd be talking about a possible game missed next Monday. More concerning injury to me would be Randle, who seemed to be definitely pissed on the sidelines.

In this case....next week would be, no Beason, no Kennard, no Ayers (another FA that can't stay on the field) and no, Selvie.

Tell you what, if they don't get some guys back on defense, Eagles will have a field day.

I think Beason will be back Monday. You never know with concussions, but it looked like a pretty mild concussion. Like mild enough that 2 years ago he wouldn't have even missed a play. The Docs definitely forced him out (as they should).
Who Knows
ZogZerg : 10/12/2015 10:36 am : link
But why did you feel better because he came back in? It's a hamstring, he came in to be a decoy and try to help win the game. He missed 2 months last year with a hammy. Let's hope it's nothing like that.

Trainers clearing you is based on what you tell them about your injury. So, if a guy wants to go back in, he just tells the trainers what they need to hear

Most of the time he was out, he was running up and down the sideline testing out his legs. He looked fine running, and then went back into the game.

If this was the case he would of been in at the start of the drive, Coughlin said Beckham came up to him every 5 seconds saying he was fine and ready to go and the trainers kept saying no...

So no that is not how it works, a player cant just say he is fine and the trainers let him go in..
Hammys are tricky
Emil : 10/12/2015 10:43 am : link
It's really impossible to say how badly he might be hurt. He probably won't even know himself until he wakes up this morning. If he just felt a "twinge" a they say it could be a very quick turn around. If he felt more of a pull or tear (feels like a series of ripples or shock waves in your hamstring) then it is probably weeks. The fact that he could still run a go route 30 mins after pulling himself from the game gives me optimism. Either way, he's going to spend more time in the training room than on the field this week.

I would agree with this if he didnt run a great route at full speed and with 2 cuts and drew that PI call...

If he was just out there running straight then i would agree he was just out there as a decoy, but he was running his routes with the intent of getting the ball..
as I said in the Kennard thread
ColHowPepper : 10/12/2015 10:45 am : link
last week, you have to give the "benefit of the doubt" to the hamstring injury, i.e., what Rich in L.A. said

When you have a chronic weakness, as OBJ seems to, you can "manage" the injury when you're running and can predict and modulate the way your leg extends (greater or lesser) and the way you plant your foot so that you're not exacerbating the injured area (high/low, biceps femoris (outside main of the three), semi tendinosus (inside/toward groin main of the three), or semimembranosus (inside and smallest of the three). When he trotted back on the field and ran pattern, he may already have been managing it so that it appeared he was running normally. just my speculation, so fwiw

Also, stress on the muscle is cumulative during its workload, so he may well have tweaked it earlier in the game, or on the cut back left when he outraced the DB to the endzone, and then more on the dance, when he wasn't thinking about it.

hamstrings are perverse bitches, stern mistresses

Odell and Giants have to be smart and conservative here even if there is a short-term price to be paid
The Giants are 3-2
jvm52106 : 10/12/2015 10:45 am : link
and this division is up for the taking. To me, if Beason, Kennard or Ayers are going to be out again the Giants have to risk making a move and give up a draft pick. You play to win now and this team could go on a roll the second half of the season if we can get guys back but you can't let yourself slide into a hole (see Dallas) waiting for the guys to return.

We need some help on defense. If Beckham is out that will hurt but we can still get by scheme wise with other players. Defensively we are too thin and missing talent to rely on scheme. We need a player or two. They don't have to be all-pros but they do need to be healthy down in down out contributors who will hold the fort down until we get some guys back.

Teams like New Orleans, Detroit, Miami, Oakland, Houston, St. Louis, Kansas City and Jacksonville would be willing to part with some players since their seasons are over already.
Whatever the real answer to the question may be,
Beezer : 10/12/2015 10:46 am : link
I don't believe we will be treated to that. Which imo is the way it ought to be.

There's absolutely no reason for the Giants coaching staff, or OBJ himself, to talk ad nauseum about "how bad" the hammy is.

I know I sound like the "get off my lawn" fan, but not everything is positive about this new age of all-info, all-the-time. Belichick knows this and plays things close to the vest, and with good reason.

The evidence is right there, at the very end of last night's game.

With a very key matchup and an extra day of rest and treatments, I'm hoping the Giants say next to nothing about the hammy, and that when they do, the commentary is vague and optimistic.

If 13 is on the field a week from tonight, at one level or another, if he can contribute on offense - and even ONLY as a decoy - sign me up.

Whatever the reason for the tears
Kyle in NY : 10/12/2015 10:58 am : link
the guy clearly cares a ton for his team. And despite some of the other things he'll do that aren't so wise, I'll always respect a player that cares like that.

Heal up, we need that guy. What a player.
Emil,
ColHowPepper : 10/12/2015 11:01 am : link
agree with what you say, and it's plain to see you know from where you speak (ripples and shock waves, dreaded sensation, and can be accompanied by excruciating pain, depending on the severity of the injury).

The twinge, while it might be minor, can be a bellweather of developing strain that has to be managed smartly.
CHP, agreed
JonC : 10/12/2015 11:09 am : link
He's a tremendous football player who cares desperately about winning, but that hammy needs to be treated with caution.

He had hamstring problems in college but played through them...there were reports that he barely practiced and then played in the games...

I would be shocked if he is not in uniform Monday night..
I want to believe it isn't bad
Matt M. : 10/12/2015 11:29 am : link
Because if he felt it a few plays before the TD and then made that cut and acceleration, his hammy wasn't in very bad shape. Then, watching him run on the sidelines it seemed like he was in pretty good shape. Likewise, when he returned and drew that PI call, he was moving pretty well and freely. Then again, it is a hamstring and he has a history, so who knows.
Youth
Canton : 10/12/2015 11:32 am : link
You can only play through them for so long before father time catches up and the injury takes longer to heal,or at worse, become more severe with each occurrence.

I'm concerned.

Yea but when he was sitting next to Randle right before our last drive and got up to walk, he was limping really badly. 5 mins later he's out there helping us win.
