Giants running game

Tark10 : 10/12/2015 9:54 am
Where is it. Michaels pointed out the Giants can't get the running game going which was allowing the 49rs to keep both safeties back. Seemed strange that Williams was virtually un-used the entire game. Sure happy with the passing game though.
It's been missing

for like 5 years.
the volume wasn't there
giants#1 : 10/12/2015 9:58 am : link
but Jennings/Vereen combined for 70 yards and just 16 carries (~4.4 ypc). That's not a bad average.

Keep in mind that Eli has a lot of freedom to check to run/pass at the LOS based on the D so it's possible (likely) that he was just taking what they were giving him. 4-5 yard passes are just as good as 4-5 yard runs.
Is it just me or
Curtis in VA : 10/12/2015 9:59 am : link
do the opposing teams LB's always have a free shot at the RB as he either gets to the hole or just a couple yards ahead of it. Why are they never blocked?
i was sure it would break out this week
grizz299 : 10/12/2015 10:00 am : link
I wonder if San Fran is actually a good team. They lost the week before but only gave Green Bay 17 points and had the ball twice within Green Bays ten and came away empty each time. Sounds like a game they could have won.
Williams is a guy that needs a ton of touches
robbieballs2003 : 10/12/2015 10:02 am : link
To get into the flow of the game but this wasn't the game for him. He doesn't really fit this OL right now. He is a guy that runs to where the hole is supposed to be but this OL isn't good enough to make that happen consistently.

Jennings is looking just Bell out there. He is so patient and reads his blocks very well to just slip through the first level. He is a much better fit for this current OL.

Vereen is a similar runner to Jennings but I don't know how many rushes you want him taking between the tackles.
We Don't Have An RB

with breakaway speed. There have been holes when a faster back (Wilson) would have been gone. Oh well.

I'm no coach, but the gameplan last night
soz915 : 10/12/2015 10:07 am : link
seemed to be pass first. Given Eli's stats and amount of pass attempts, I have to believe the run game was never going to be the focal point. I distinctively noticed that Andre Williams barely saw the field all game.

But I'm not sure why its seen as such problem, especially last night. Eli was obviously pretty successful gven his stat line plus Vereen and Jennings combined for 12 catches for 107 yards and a TD. When is the last time our RBs were used as such weapons out of the backfield? I'll take it!
Didn't really try
FJ : 10/12/2015 10:09 am : link
When Eli was completing passes at will, there wasn't a strong need for the running game. The Giants did pick up about 5 yards several times when they ran on 1st down, and Jenning also picked up a few 1st downs with his effort. I thought Jennings and Vereen both had very strong games.
According to some people here
superspynyg : 10/12/2015 10:15 am : link
We don't need a running game. We can just through short passes and that's the same. I don't think this, but some do.

Agree completely that Williams is not a good fit right now with this line. He lowers his head and charges forward almost as if bound to follow a script without adjusting to what is actually happening in front of him.
at least
mdc1 : 10/12/2015 10:19 am : link
we don't have the 3 and out offense. Rather see them bleed the defense to death with short throws, move the chains and strike big when available. Vereen is making our team better. If we could just get back Cruz and see what he can do, things could get very interesting for other competitors. It will be very hard for them to defend the field with all of these pass catchers. Should help the running game too. We really need to get Cruz back on the field.

Unfortunately, Jennings is about 3 steps slower than Bell (who isn't).
OL not very good run blocking

especially at the goal line.
We punted twice and had one interception
SLIM_ : 10/12/2015 10:24 am : link
They really couldn't stop the pass. If we converted more in the red zone and maybe played defense, the game wouldn't have been close and we would've run the ball more. We were basically able to pass at will.

Don't forget, we also lost our best blocker at tight end also.

5 new players at each OL position, including
Steve Filipowicz : 10/12/2015 10:30 am : link
Schwartz who barely played last year. Takes a while for an OL to mesh in the run game. Let's just keep plugging away with the run game and, hopefully, in the second half of the season they will start to click.
Hopefully if/when Beatty returns
The_Boss : 10/12/2015 10:36 am : link
And at RT, that'll change. Papa said it last night: after 4 games, teams have enough tape on Newhouse/Flowers to scheme vs our OT's. Flowers has the talent to deal with it better than Newhouse but their play has definitely been noticeably a tick down from what we've seen in the first 3 games.

Eli drove the field at will, even when his starters were out with injuries.

And people are really complaining about the running game? Newsflash: The Giants offense is not geared to the running game.

And sorry to be so snarky but how can people be watching these games and still think the Giants are going to come out running the ball?
The running game has been at best average since Tiki left!
213374 : 10/12/2015 10:49 am : link
Say what you will about Tiki but when he got the ball there was always a chances he could go the distance. The Jints do not have a back with game breaking speed. They seem to be using the short passing game as their run game.

Dialing up Brandon and cohorts...

Brandon you and Ware , Bradshaw and company were only average when you were dominating TOP and intimidating strong teams like Balt. and a host of others.

Shame on you.
I thought running game was okay last night except for

By average you mean like when Jacobs and Ward both rushed for 1000+ yards in 2008? Got it

Take what the defense gives you
djstat : 10/12/2015 11:28 am : link
Eli has freedom to change plays at LOS based onw hat the defense gives. Eli managed that well last night going 41 for 54 (75.9% completion percentage) 441 yards. He took what was there. It resulted in 30 points. BE HAPPY
The running game..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/12/2015 11:31 am : link
is morphing to the Patriots style running game where we use short routes and RB passes to get 4-6 yards.

That can be just as effective as running between the tackles.

One positive is that our RB's are having very few plays stopped for losses this year.
I believe the average was about 4 yards per run
AP in Halfmoon : 10/12/2015 11:33 am : link
That's not awful.
True,
giantgiantfan : 10/12/2015 11:37 am : link
but this is the first time the Giants really used the short passing game to running backs in substitute of their running game. I'm at least happy with that. This line still needs a mauling RT and a better RB 1. 12 passes between Jennings and Vereen for over 100 yards and a TD was pretty effective.
Jennings should carry the ball 70%
SHO'NUFF : 10/12/2015 12:06 pm : link
with 25% Vereen and 5% Andre.
I did like the run to Beckham that got called back
Matt M. : 10/12/2015 12:10 pm : link
and the few delayed runs after Eli faked the WR screen to the other side. We are seeing new wrinkles each week/

Not debating cause, just stating our running game (OL + RBs) failed there pretty bad.

The issue with the running game is in the Redzone.....
Simms11 : 10/12/2015 12:44 pm : link
If you can't run down there, they will have too many defenders in coverage in tight quarters. Makes everything down there more difficult. I think it's one of the reasons for our lack of success in the Redzone. If we scor TDs instead of FGs in the first half, this game does not come down to Eli's 4th quarter heroics, IMO.
I always felt you need maulers at Guard to successfully
Jimmy Googs : 10/12/2015 1:12 pm : link
run at Goal Line defenses. Everybody packed in so close doesn't lend itself for too many creases so someone has to push his guy(s) back into the endzone to get the score.
There seemed to be a lot
PEEJ : 10/12/2015 1:18 pm : link
of tosses to the RBs rather than hand-offs. Have the Giants been doing this much? I just don't recall seeing this so often.

I think it's a function of the offense. For better or worse, the "run game" is these 3-4-5 yard passes that come out quick.
