using Damontre Moore more this year

Andy in Boston : 10/13/2015 10:35 am
Anyone else agree, that the 1st 5 games this year haven't been great from a matchup standpoint for Damontre? His strength isn't matching up against the ground and pound teams...and we've faced 4 of them in the 1st 5 games, with the exception of Atlanta. I would expect to see more of him this week against Philly...and in upcoming games against New Orleans, New England. He got the 2 sacks this past week which is great....I'm hoping we start to see more of it.
Thoughts?

This probably depends heavily on 2 things.

1) Does he shave his chest, and

2) Does he look manly in salmon.

I would expect to see him more against the Eagles.

I think for now he is a situational pass rusher in obvious passing situations as his run defense and play recognition is that bad.
My only concern with Moore is that he is a ticking time bomb
NYGmen58 : 10/13/2015 10:47 am : link
as far as penalties go. Everytime he's on the field he's at risk of committing a personal foul and/or unsportsmanlike conduct.

I agree he should be used more given his speed and pass rush ability but I just hold my breath, as I have a feeling he's going to cost us 15 yards in a bad spot.

Your concerns are shared by the coaches.
If I were the opposing QB I'd just check down to a run
jcn56 : 10/13/2015 10:52 am : link
right at him every single time, he just looks completely overmatched there. That, combined with his habit of committing stupid penalties probably keeps him on the bench more than they'd like.
He actually looked pretty good on Sunday night
djm : 10/13/2015 10:52 am : link
Call them what you will but Moore did manage to land on the qb a couple of times. Sacks are sacks. At least he's active out there. He could be an interesting player as the year progresses.
Those 2 Sacks on
Enoch : 10/13/2015 10:53 am : link
They weren't exactly the kind where the defender gets around a Tackle and takes down the passer 7 yards behind the LOS. Moore just happened to be the closest defender pursuing Kaepernick when he ran out-of-bounds.
Damontre
Old Dirty Beckham : 10/13/2015 10:54 am : link
plays with a lot of fire and intensity but he's the type of player we cant take advantage of right now. He's a great third pass rusher but without the top two guys to take heat off of him he's not nearly as effective as he could be. Coupled with his inability to defend the run there are only so many snaps to give him where he has the opportunity to hit the qb.
I think Philly is another bad matchup
giants#1 : 10/13/2015 11:01 am : link
which makes all 3 divisional opponents bad matchups for him. His strength is rushing the passer and not worrying about anything else and while Philly is an overpowering run team like Dal/Was, they love stretch plays and the read option where gap discipline is vital to the D's success. Gap discipline and holding the POA are probably Moore's biggest weaknesses so I doubt we'll see much more of him unless it's obvious passing situations.

I think the fact Owa has seen significant playing time the last 2 weeks, despite missing part of preseason and the first 3 games due to injury, speaks volumes about the staff's opinion of Moore.

Not to mention his penchant for celebrating every positive play he makes. I just think that this reflects poorly on what his focus should be. There's still a bit of immaturity that I get from his play. I know that he plays with energy, which can be a positive thing, but I think it's also what causes him to play with a lack of discipline. He's always diving for late hits on the runner or on the QB or overcommitting to the pass rush and then losing outside contain responsibilities.
At some point you have to fill out a slip on Moore
ghost718 : 10/13/2015 11:22 am : link
and stick it in Reese's overflowing complaint box.

Jerry got mine about 3 years ago.
Moore is the best pass rusher on the roster
Rjanyg : 10/13/2015 11:48 am : link
I would like to see a 3-4 look from Spags this week vs. the read option with Moore in a 2 point stance just to mix it up a little.
Predictably
JonC : 10/13/2015 12:27 pm : link
Moore plays better standing up and in space, he generally does a good job finding the football and closing on the carrier. Those skills are more like a 3-4 OLB role where he excelled at A&M. He's inconsistent on the line where he's forced to play run first, he's easily engulfed by OL and doesn't disengage well. He wears down, remember TC indicated Moore's weight plunged 20-30 lbs over the course of the 2014 season.

He's also an undisciplined, immature kid who repeats mental mistakes. Combine that with the inability to consistently play run, it earns the penalty machine a seat on the bench.
He's got more than a little Frank Walker to him
Greg from LI : 10/13/2015 12:29 pm : link
Which is not a good thing.

So basically, another square peg in a round hole. Hopefully, the last.
Waiting for Moore

to get a chance at some looping stunts to take advantage of his speed
Wait til next year

He will be playing OLB in a 3-4 somewhere. Meanwhile, he remains a 3rd down specialist.

Eric, why more against Phila? They are a run heavy team, with 2 very good OTs. I would think Phila would run right at Moore every time he is in the game, unless for some reason they are behind by multiple TDs.

Moore is a role player....nothing else at this point. There is a use for him as a speed rusher on 3rd & long or late in games when protecting a lead.

As a football player, Moore reminds me too much of Jaquain (sp?) Williams. Too raw, college production didn't project well to a pro 4-3, etc.

I was thinking the same shit.. He has to take it down a notch. Or TC will be forced to bench him

In other words, he's close to being declared another draft bust. :-)
He is forced into the rotation now

but why can't we keep him as a pass-rushing specialist for the future.

situational changes on the defense..don't think you'll see much of him....lining up over Peters???? A mismatch anyway.

Dead on
Spags needs to bring him off the edge. Even up the AGap.
