NFT: Playboy to Drop Nudity in Their Magazine?

gidiefor : Mod : 10/13/2015 3:34 pm
Holy cr@p! What is the world coming to? They say they can't compete with internet porn and their subscribership has gone from over 5 million to 800 thousand with the prevalence of the internet.

NYT Article linked below
Link - ( New Window )
And now it will go from 800.000
Section331 : 10/13/2015 3:35 pm : link
to about 8.
prolly only subscribed to by

waiting room offices
So they are trying to compete
ron mexico : 10/13/2015 3:37 pm : link
with GQ and Esquire now?
Its amazing that anyone would think this is a good investment
MetsAreBack : 10/13/2015 3:38 pm : link

Yes the Internet killed their business model. This just in - the Internet has also killed the magazine industry... oh and by the way - you dont have differentiated content to deliver on top of it.

Clearly the screws a little loose in the Hefner household.
The day porn became free on the internet

this day was inevitable
so they're banking on people actually reading it for the articles?

So does gidiefor. Must have forgotten this was posted this morning.
While they may lose some long-time subscribers,....
Bluenatic : 10/13/2015 3:45 pm : link
...this is a move that makes sense for their business. Playboy can't compete with real pornography, but they still have value as a men's lifestyle brand. If they invest in editorial quality and double-down on their web and TV properties (not to mention licensing), they could still have a pretty healthy business moving forward. Competitors like GQ, Esquire and Men's Journal can't be happy about this development.
I only read the articles
giant24 : 10/13/2015 3:46 pm : link
anyway so no big deal.
Apparently the magazine
ron mexico : 10/13/2015 3:47 pm : link
is basically considered an advertising expense for the brand (the bunny) which gets put on tons of products overseas
If all they had was the magazine...
Gary from The East End : Admin : 10/13/2015 4:06 pm : link
... they'd have gone out of business years ago. It's the brand that has value and they're trying to make it more generally available.

I think it's a good move

They already have tbe brand recognition. Keep that going, make your image sexy instead of nudity. There's 51% of the world out there that they've barely touched in their target audience.
There's a lot of magazines out there that already do 'sexy'.

Crowded market to jump into.

That's fine but i fail to see what they're doing to build the brand value. Seems like they're just slowly impairing it. Better to sell now and monetize that brand value if this is honestly the best (they) can come up with.
