Flashback: Tiki Barber

Old Dirty : 10/13/2015 3:56 pm
As many of you have been singing the praises of Shane Vereen lately. Let me remind everyone of what we had in Tiki Barber. I know he had some shitty things to say about Coughlin and Eli, and he's not really looked at in a positive light around here, but he was & still is one of my favorite Giants I've witnessed in my lifetime. He was the majority of our offense for a good number of years. I hope Shane Vereen has this kind of career with the Giants, especially with OBJ at WR.

Vereen was great the other night
BlackLight : 10/13/2015 3:58 pm : link
but even watching him made me appreciate how ridiculous Tiki was coming out of the backfield.
There isn't anyone on this board

that diesn't realize what we had in Tiki..He was our best multi-purpose back ever, imo..

Being a prick is another issue
Tiki was deadly in space...

...Vereen is excellent at getting open, has great hands - but doesn't have the quickness that Tiki did. Barber was an automatic miss on a one-on-one open-field tackler. MAN did he have vision.

And for several years, they thought that was all Barber could be. A situational back. HAD to pair him with another. Ron Dayne. Good God. When they finally gave him a full load, he could do it all like no player the Giants ever had.

Why does any mention of Tiki have to draw this response? Give it a break.
Man was that music annoying.

How do they not include his first TD, a complete reverse of direction in a goal to go situation against Arizona in his first game?
great highlights, thanks for posting

Tiki had great patience and vision the way he waited for his blocks then hit the hole

I'm guessing because many fans consider Barber to be a jerk.
great video highlights
federer70 : 10/13/2015 4:06 pm : link
but they should add some more pre-eli highlights :-) I remember he had a great screen pass he took all the way (think it was with graham or Collins) where he split the defenders. think he also had another td run or punt return td where he split the defenders - he loved to do that and excelled at doing that (and talked about it in interviews). definitely unfortunately we weren't able to win sb vs ravens with him.

Several great examples of Amani and Plax with great blocking downfield too in those clips
Tiki wasn't a burner, but he had better acceleration than people give
Greg from LI : 10/13/2015 4:08 pm : link
him credit for. He also ran with much more power than a lot of people remember - he wasn't a bruiser like Bradshaw, but he was tough to bring down.

He also had a knack for shifting his body just enough to avoid big, crushing hits.
High and tight baby...

look at how he carried the Rock after TC got here. Perfect.
Tiki's first game
Old Dirty : 10/13/2015 4:20 pm : link
Tiki started at HB as a rookie against the Eagles to open the season. Two other rookies started that game. Who can name them both?

It is odd that Barber is one of the only players where his personality gets brought up in every single thread discussing him, though.

That would be like somebody bringing up LT's drug and hooker habits every time he got mentioned, or Strahan forever being connected by fans to the dumb comments he consistently made from 2000 through 2006.

Yes. It's getting so old. And he's not a prick. He made some bad choices and said some stupid things. Let it go. He gave us more joy and any other back we've had for decades.

Was it against the Eagles? Garnes was one. Hilliard was another.
Tiki carried the Giants for a while

I thought his point was to say we shouldn't denigrate the player because we tend to denigrate the guy. It was pro-tiki in a way.

BTW, Tiki got a kick out of my handle on the BBI interview Gary did with him a few years ago. FTW!!!

Tiki was money in the bank on the dump off out of the backfield but there were not too many of those in highlights unfortunately.

Did you notice how many times #17 was downfield blocking for Tiki?

amazing how Plax was burying DB's in many or even most of those clips
I'm still friggin annoyed

that Tiki was taken over Bavaro in the "Top 10" Giants on NFL Network.

Seriously, did any1 say Tiki was the best RB in any1 of his seasons?

No, but yet Steve Walsh said Bavaro was the best TE in the league. Fuqing Steve Walsh sed this! Fuqqqqqqqqqq!

Great highlights. I still gotta credit that stellar offensive line to him having the years he did in the last few years of his career.
Tiki became a great running back later in his career........

and had 200 yard games. I'm not even sure any of our backs have even 200 yards yet, through 5 games.

He ran for 1,200 yards behind the 2003 offensive line. He had a lot of talent.

Right. And he had his monster seasons once those guys like Snee O'Hara and McKenzie came around. Did you see some of the holes he was given? Great shifty runner, it was a match made in heaven.
One aspect of Tiki's game I wish other players emulated

is his reaction to scoring a touchdown. Jog over to the official and hand him the ball. I always found that classy. I forget who said it first but I love this quote; "Act like you've been there before."
I'll never forget his final
giantgiantfan : 10/14/2015 2:52 am : link
regular season game against Washington. Went for over 200 yards and 3 TDs and carried the Giants on his back into the playoffs.
Yes, he had a good OL in front of him.....
Doomster : 10/14/2015 9:04 am : link
But his greatest gift, was the cut back...he could turn nothing into something.....no need to sub this guy...running or receiving, he was a dual threat....

Best RB the Giants have ever had.....

Just wish he kept his mouth shut in his last season, and didn't throw his team under the bus, while trying to advance his new career....
