Source says Brandon Weeden has been informed by #Cowboys coaches the team will start Matt Cassel after the bye week vs #Giants

The Cowboys are suddenly very good in the front seven on defense.

This game is going to be a bitch.
Add another guy to the list..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/13/2015 4:38 pm : link
that people will poo-poo after we win by saying that we are playing a bunch of shitty QB's.

By the end of the year, victories over Taylor, Kap, Cousins (twice), Cassel, Bradford and Winston will be chalked up to getting lucky by playing absolute dreck behind center.

At least Cassel won't have seen any action in some time before facing us.
Yeah..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/13/2015 4:39 pm : link
and all of our division rivals played good last week......

If the Giants got their asses handed to them at home against the Pats, I'm pretty sure this board would be looking to run multiple players and coaches out of town.

2 wins and the Giants have the division all but locked up. Cowboys would drop to 2-4 with Romo still weeks from returning and the Eagles would be 2-5 (or 3-4) but more importantly 0-3 in the division.

Don't care about Cassel... But will Beatty be activated and playing?
Ben in Tampa : 10/13/2015 4:41 pm : link
And can he contribute against Dallas?
There is a reason the Bills gave him up for a 5th
WillieYoung : 10/13/2015 4:41 pm : link
I went to training camp and watched all 4 pre-season games and he didn't throw the ball beyond 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. He's Brandon Weedln light: same arm strength, less accuracy.
Didn't Simms say on Sunday there was no way...
okiegiant : 10/13/2015 4:41 pm : link
Dallas would play Cassel over Weeden?

Weeden has been bad, but I don't know if Cassel is going to be much better.
OK
Bluenatic : 10/13/2015 4:42 pm : link
Cassel was 15-32 for 127 yards and 2 TDs in his one career start against, a 27-16 loss at Arrowhead in 2009.

That is how big the swing is.

If the Giants win the next 2 games on top of the Eagles losing the next week at Carolina on a Sunday night (after the Giants game), there is a chance to go up 3 1/2 games on them and 2 games up on Dallas before they have to play Seattle.

We have to take advantage of this. The problem is I don't see the Giants getting both games here.

I have seen the Giants lose to the Cowboys without Romo, so even that game they are not totally out of the woods.

Cassel played for the Pats
Bob from Massachusetts : 10/13/2015 5:00 pm : link
the year Brady was injured, but not so well since. He certainly has more experience as a starter. I also was impressed by the Cowboys front 7 against the Patriots, and I'm worried about that. I'm worried about everything. It's gotta be tricky to move right into starting with relatively little time working with the rest of the team.

But I swear it seems to me that for the Cowboys Witten just runs out 10 yards, turns around, and the ball is there for a first down. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but after watching that for a decade or so, it seems like anybody could just stand there for a few seconds and then chuck the ball to him. Witten, Weeden, whatever. Drives me crazy.

If they continue to be as injury-riddled as they were by the end of the Niners game, these 2 games won't tell us anything at all.

Sources confirm what @Edwerderespn first reported: Matt Cassel will start against the NYG. The decision was supposed to be kept within.
The cowturds will stil have Witten and Cole Beasley so it really
213374 : 10/13/2015 5:09 pm : link
doesn't matter who is the qb! If you watched the NE-cowturd game did you notice how NE double covered Witten and shut him down? I wonder if Brady realized he was helping the Jints by beating the cowturds?
If they don't have a high functioning Dez Bryant available...
Torrag : 10/13/2015 5:19 pm : link
..we are going to win by more than a TD. If he plays and is effective it's a tough game.
Makes sense for them - Weeden isn't winning
jcn56 : 10/13/2015 5:26 pm : link
and even if Cassel is Weeden-lite, we've got no tape on him, so maybe two weeks to prepare and the element of surprise works to their advantage.

Or, maybe not.

cassell/weeden/romo whoever - it's Whitten that kills the Giants. he is always open against us. also Randall runs hard.
Unfortunately
BlackLight : 10/13/2015 5:27 pm : link
I'm also concerned about Dallas's defense, now that Greg Hardy is back and obviously a force. And I believe Dallas moved him around on the DL against New England.

Chuck Q : 10/13/2015 5:30 pm : link
double teamed or not we don't have the coverage players at LB or safety to shut down Witten like the patriots have.
Cassel is a much more accomplished pro QB than Weeden.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/13/2015 5:30 pm : link
He has won 34 games as a starter, and led two different teams to 10-5 records in that role. (Really 11-5 in New England; Brady left the 2008 opener with the game scoreless.) Belichick and a soft schedule may have carried him in 2008, but he was solid for Todd Haley in 2010 - until that horrific wild card game against Baltimore.

Weeden has a career record of 5-19. I don't care how bad the Browns were. He's now 0-4 with Dallas.

On the plus side, Cassel has done nothing since 2010, and has lost three jobs to fairly tepid competition. Saying that he is more accomplished than Brandon Weeden is fairly faint praise, and his meager accomplishments are rapidly fading into history.
Who they play at QB is almost irrelevant,
j_rud : 10/13/2015 5:42 pm : link
Neither will win the game for them if it's on the line like Romo can and has. If Dallas does manage to win it will be because their front 7, which as Eric pointed out has seen a serious boost with the return of Hardy and McClain, keeps the Giants under 17 points. To me that's almost like the magic number. A Cassel (or Weeden, for that matter)led offense is going to struggle to put up over 20 points unless they get serious help (turnovers, good field position via special teams) from the opposition. IMO if they score 20 they win.

Also, this Dallas/extra week-New York/short week scheduling thing is absolute bullshit.

We don't have big dogs
DavidinBMNY : 10/13/2015 6:31 pm : link
But our dogs have been playing to contain running qbs. While Cassel has to be more mobile then Weeden, he's not going to heat you with his legs like the guys we just played. So we should be less concerned with boxing him in and throw a few more punches at him.

Same applies to Houston's coach (a demonstrable, uncouth idiot, IMO). Chip Kelly too.

No he will not. At best he will be practicing with the team at that point (and it will be interesting to learn what position he is practicing at). Unless there is an injury to an OL, I wouldn't expect him to be added to the 53 man roster until week nine or so.
Cassel sucks
pjcas18 : 10/13/2015 10:25 pm : link
if Dez is still out the Giants should control the Cowboys offense.

Cassel is probably better than Weeden, but he's not a good quarterback.
Dallas D
stretch234 : 10/14/2015 12:14 am : link
I am less worried about their D. The Giants just had a game plan against Buffalo who has better players at all levels of the D and moved the ball

E. Flowers is better than M. Cannon

Quick pass again and beat to death the RB' out of the backfield. I have always worried about the Dallas offense and getting them off the field.

Lets get through Philly first

We almost beat these guys in Dallas when they had Romo and at least some Dez along with that vaunted offensive line. Remember we had ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING OFFENSE that game. Again that was with Romo, some Dez, and no fucking offense.

I don't care about them right now though. I pumped for Philly and I wish I didn't have to wait until Monday. We've got a chance to put Philly 2 games out and watch EDP go nuclear chubmarine.

In 2010, three of the eight highest passer ratings in the NFL belonged to these luminaries:
Michael Vick 100.2
Josh Freeman 95.9
Matt Cassel 93.0

Entering 2011, fans of the Eagles, Bucs and Chiefs envisioned a glorious future. By 2012, all three QBs had crashed and burned.

to be fair the cowboys are more injured than the giants ever have been, including one very important part. a top 5 qb.
So what happened to this?
rptl530 : 10/14/2015 8:14 am : link
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke highly of Brandon Weeden on Sept. 22 as the quarterback prepares to enter the starting lineup for the injured Tony Romo. Jones stated it's "a thing of beauty" when the veteran backup throws the football.

And this....."Frankly, you won't see a more gifted passer," Jones said.

I will admit though....

The Cowboys are missing their starting QB. That's an incredibly difficult injury for any team to overcome. (Keep in mind, though: they picked Weeden as the backup to Romo, who has never been mistaken for an Eli-style Iron Man, and they are living with the consequences of that choice.)

Once you get past Romo, their injury situation isn't really that bad. Bryant will be back soon - maybe as early as the Giant game. Gregory has already declared himself fit, and I don't think they were counting on him for a big contribution this year anyway, though he seemed to be surpassing expectations before the ankle. Knee injuries knocked out one member of their running-back-by-committee, plus one very good cornerback.

By comparison, the Giants have played the whole season without their starting left tackle, their franchise DE, and their star slot receiver who is being paid like a #1. The actual #1 and #2 receivers both pulled hamstrings on Sunday. The #2 TE suffered a likely career-ending infection, and #3 is nursing a bad knee. Both starting DEs (after subtracting the aforementioned franchise player) have been out for weeks. Three of their four best linebackers are questionable or worse for Monday's game. Two of their top three safeties were signed off the street to replace three promising young players on IR.

Qualitatively, Dallas is more hobbled by injuries - simply because a franchise QB trumps everything else, and because the Cowboys are so dependent on Romo and Bryant. Quantitatively, the Giants are a medical mess. The silver lining is that seven or eight of their injuries are week-to-week, so reinforcements could be on the way, with Beatty's return on the horizon as well.
