Go Rangers!
Let's make it 4 in a row.

I'm pumped to see DMc play. Hopefully he can pick his spots wisely on dropping the gloves. Enforcing is fun to watch, but he also needs to eating some minutes and playing good defensive hockey to give the top guys a break.

By most accounts he seems to be I'm the right headspace in that regard, I just don't want to see him do anything that will dissuade AV from dressing him frequently going forward.
The two components to The Rath's
Stufftherun : 10/13/2015 6:47 pm : link
game that he has to focus on is moving his feet and his positional integrity. He tends to get caught flat footed or running out of position for the big hit which leaves him in no man's land.

Let's get 'er done Rath and LGR!!!

I wouldn't recognize Brassard, Glass, Etem, McIlrath, Klein, Boyle, Fast, Lindberg, Miller, Stalberg, Stoll, Yandle and Raanta. Not sure what that means nor why I wouldn't recognize certain players I'd think I would (Brassard for example).

On the other hand I never watch player interviews between periods so maybe I should be surprised how many I would recognize.

And the top line had a sold game - I'll take that effort every night. Nash had playoff luck.

Glass has to fucking sit. No excuse after tonight.

Clean up the mental mistakes and dumb plays - but a solid effort overal IMO.

for the first loss after 3 in a row to start the year. Gonna be a long season. Hope some of you guys can maintain an enjoyment for the games and maintain your mental health while also analyzing every single bad play by every single player, then deciding who is awful or great and who needs to be kicked off the roster. Hope some of you will join me in waiting a little bit (maybe a little more than a little bit) to decide how we look and where we stand.

Shitty game. 0-9 on the PP to start the year. I mean its insane that we have 9 pps in 4 games but I digress. That needs to get better. Doubtful.

Aren't random idiots that come out of the wood work to rant and rave and say dumb crap like they've never seen a game before, and then disappear until the next game thread. Maybe that's what makes it even more weird. It's the same posts every thread but also there's always alot of panic and anxiety for a team that's been consistently good. Haven't won it all but as teams go (especially compared to other Ranges teams over the years) they are really likeable and fun to root for. Of course its part of the fun to analyze the players and the team but it's just more exasperation and worry and complaints about players than you'd think. It's similar of course to the Giants game threads in the way that there's a manic depressive attitude towards every play and every player and every result. A lot of it is just normal fan emotion but sometimes it seems like people are hoping for the chance to flip out
I have to laugh
blueblood'11 : 10/14/2015 7:02 am : link
The Rangers put 41 fucking shots on goal tonight. If not for the fact the goalie was hotter then hot, and the Rangers rang it off the post I believe three times, and Hutchinson had some luck to boot, the outcome would have been much different.

That's hockey Suzyn John Sterling would have said if he were doing the play by play. The only thing that is bothersome is they had so many opportunities on the powers play and couldn't convert. Plus, the officials let the Jets get away with murder. Then again if they had called all the penalties the occurred that they either missed or intentionally let go the Rangers may have had as many as ten maybe more power play chances.

To say the Rangers played a lousy game as the asshole in the Post said this morning is totally off base. They put 41 shots on goal. They were working out there. I thought they really skated well in the second and third periods. If they had won the game they'd be writing a different story line. Bottom line is the Rangers did not have a lot of puck luck last night period. And the power play sucked.
....

Over the course of an 82 game season you'll lose a lot of games where you 'should have' won. Felt like last night was one of them.

I was hoping #27 would be a different player after adjusting to his first season of wearing the "C" on his chest but he looks rather pedestrian and is not the player we saw growing into an elite D man 2 seasons ago. Could the responsibilties of the captaincy be that much of an albatross? His patrner is off to a poor start as well, you wonder how much that might also play into it.
nah, you can't lay all the blame on Girardi
Greg from LI : 10/14/2015 8:24 am : link
McD just hasn't played like the player he was a couple of years ago. He used to be known for his heady play, and now he makes unforced errors all the time. The defensemen as a whole were rather disappointing last night.

Fluffy crawled out of his hole, but didn't regurgitate a Larry Brooks column? I'm perturbed.
....
BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 8:33 am : link
I've criticized his partner plenty, but McDonagh isn't playing nearly as well as he did in 2013-2014. Making poor reads, sloppy with the puck, etc. He used to force turnovers and drive offense by doing so on a consistent basis. The play he made the other night against Columbus where he jumped the neutral zone and intercepted a pass to push play the other way was one he was making frequently.

It's a long season, obviously, and this team has started slowly for a few years now. Just something to keep an eye on.

I haven't liked the performance of the defense outside of Yandle and Klein overall thus far. But it's been less than 5% of the season. Happy with the team as constructed.

As people on Twitter love to remind me: "Glass isn't the reason the Rangers lost last night." Of course he isn't. But Glass (and the fourth line) was on the ice for three separate shifts while the Rangers were down in the third period; including being on the ice down by one with five minutes left in the game in the offensive zone.

By the way, Glass played more than Oscar Lindberg (who played just over 10 minutes). Glass played three minutes less than J.T. Miller, one minute less than Viktor Stalberg and had more ice time than Jarret Stoll. 1-13 in shots. 0-6 in scoring chances.

FWIW
NYerInMA : 10/14/2015 12:07 pm : link
Glass and McIlrath are skating as extras at practice today.
My thought
PaulN : 10/14/2015 12:28 pm : link
Glass and McIlrath played because of the size of the Jets, Glass also played the game before because of the size of the Blue jackets and the fact that they roughed us up a bit. I expect Fast and Boyle to be back against Montreal where better skaters would be the priority.

The other thing is that Fast and Boyle were not off to great starts either, so that is another reason they were benched. I think 2 games is too soon to say anything, but the coach is using it to motivate them I believe. He really wants to get off to a good start this season.

My guess is that he may think that resting players before the playoffs start would be a huge bonus, but you can't do that unless you can afford to do it. The only thing for them to accomplish anymore is winning the cup. They went to the finals, and they won a presidents cup.
My thought's
PaulN : 10/14/2015 12:32 pm : link
On the game was that the goalie played a great game for them. The other big thing is that our power play continues to struggle, I am no longer confused about this now. We simply do not have players that are good on the power play. It is not going to change, I am convinced of that, which is why we need to move Yandle at the trade deadline, he simply does not bring enough to lose all the draft picks he could get us, and we move McIlrath and Skjei into Boyle and Yandles spot next season, in fact we can move Skjei up this season after we trade Yandle, if it happens.
How I wish
PaulN : 10/14/2015 12:34 pm : link
We could move Boyle and move Diaz back on the team, I think he is a better player then Boyle at this point and for a fraction of the cost, but that is never going to happen.
....
BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 12:54 pm : link
Really disagree with you on Yandle, Paul. I think re-signing him is crucial to maximizing this team's window over the next few years.

BTW, Ovechkin was benched for sleeping late and missing a morning skate. I hope they miss the playoffs by a point.

Totally agree that we dont have the right players for the PP, but even more confused at hanging the problem on Yandle. The PP didnt work before Yandle. But when he came over he was the leading PP assist man in the NHL with 24. Year before he had 28 PP assists. Both on bad PHX teams. Yandle produces like Karlsson on the PP, and outproduces Subban (both score more goals). Grossly outproduces Keith. Yandle is the one cornerstone PP player we have.

The problem is everyone else. He needs a point partner with a howitzer. We dont have that. Then you need 1-2 forwards playing below the circle with quick shots and a remorseless shooter mentality. That is simply not what Stepan, Nash et al bring to the table. Finally, you need a big body to park in front of the next (Kreider, Miller, Stalberg could all do that) and you need to set up for more one timers, which is a coaching issue. Just my 2 cents at least.
I'm not blaming Yandle
PaulN : 10/14/2015 1:27 pm : link
Did not mean for it to sound that way. But if he can't fix the power play, then I would not pay him the money it will cost to keep him. I am not a window of opportunity thinking person.

When The King is gone so is his salary of 9 mil, that is a lot of assets, and who is to say we would not have a good goalie to replace him, this window of opportunity is nothing but bullshit.

What we do need is to regain some of the draft picks the asshole threw away. If we don't then we will not sustain winning. Yandle is a good player, I do not dislike him at all. But I also know that we can get a first round draft pick and more then that for him.

he has such a low cap hit that a team would only need about a mil in cap space to add him at the trade deadline, and if they are anxious, you could pull off quite a heist for him.

So essentially I admit that he is a good player, I just think he can be replaced by Brady Skjei, he is not as good offensively, but will be better defensively and he can skate and has good size. We paid a lot for Staal, a lot for Girardi, and will pay a lot for McDonaugh, I can not see us paying a lot for Yandle also.
I do agree with Paul on one point
Greg from LI : 10/14/2015 1:44 pm : link
I don't just assume that the Rangers will go into a tailspin a few years from now when Lundqvist either declines or retires. There are several teams competing at a high level without franchise goalies. Look at last year's final - anyone consider Crawford or Bishop to be a superstar?
....
BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 1:53 pm : link
Paul, McDonagh's locked up until 2019. Also, to your point, the goalies they've drafted (namely the Russian) have apparently been really impressive).

Greg, I don't view this as some inevitably crash to a bottom five team in a few years - rather, I view it as a peak window (now) with a slowly declining probability. Not that there is no shot of winning a Cup, but that the highest probability is short-term. I don't follow basketball all that closely, but I think the Mavs a few years back were an example of a team that won outside of the perceived 'peak window'. To phrase it a bit differently, if I was told the Rangers were going to win the Cup in the next five years, I'd bet it were this season or next.

And like others have mentioned in previous threads, Buchnevich/Skjei surpassing expectations could keep that probability higher than I expect over the next few years.
Rangers organization has also been really good
Deej : 10/14/2015 2:01 pm : link
the consistent stream of young blood has been amazing. Maybe not superstars, but good to very good players. The NHL vets rave about how good of a finishing school the AHL team has become. And we've also had some guys make the NCAA to NY direct leap very successfully. Bodes well for the future.

I don't just assume that the Rangers will go into a tailspin a few years from now when Lundqvist either declines or retires. There are several teams competing at a high level without franchise goalies. Look at last year's final - anyone consider Crawford or Bishop to be a superstar?

Nobody said nosedive, but we'll have gone well over a decade without a top 10 draft pick and every offseason we'll continue to have cap casualties as the younger players earn their paydays. And at this point we have very little in the pipeline, at least relative to what other teams have coming.

Is it impossible to win a Cup? No... but there is no honor in doing what the Wings (must say -they are off to a great start again somehow) or Flyers are doing. There is nothing wrong with an on-the-fly rebuild which appears to be what Boston is doing right now, just two seasons off a Presidents Trophy
First of all, they have a probable top 6 winger
Greg from LI : 10/14/2015 2:13 pm : link
and potential top pairing defenseman in the pipeline, so it's not exactly barren. Second of all, they have several very good young players 25 or younger - Stepan, Kreider, Miller, Hayes, Lindberg, McDonagh. No, they probably won't be able to keep them all, but they'll get assets in return for them in a deal.
....
BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 2:22 pm : link
On the flip side, their best forward (Nash) and best player (Lundqvist) are both over 30. I expect Lundqvist to age gracefully, but my thinking is that it's unlikely the Rangers are going to be the best team in the league for the rest of the decade - which they were last year in the regular season (and I expect them to be up there this year as well).
I think Nash is a goner this offseason
MetsAreBack : 10/14/2015 2:31 pm : link
I don't see any other way to try and keep this group together as long as possible.

What Greg described as far as pipeline and youth isn't something 20 other teams in this league can't also say, and in many cases their young talent is better considering all the top draft picks.

Anyway... we're 4 games into an exciting season and we all agree this year at least, we can contend. So I guess we see how this season goes and go from there. I do think its paramount we re-sign Yandle. My understanding is none of these younger D-men is particularly 'offensive' back there and we'll lose Boyle too. We'd be left with 6 D with minimal offensive game.
Nash has a NTC or NMC
Deej : 10/14/2015 2:36 pm : link
I dont hate Sather like some do, but we're really handcuffed by the NTCs and NMCs that have been given out, or in Nash's case traded for.

BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 2:40 pm : link
Nash's NTC turned into a limited NMC this off-season. He had to give a list of ten teams he'd be willing to go to on July 1st.
Agree
PaulN : 10/14/2015 2:55 pm : link
Let's hope this is the year, and I am open to signing Yandle, but do you guys know how much it may cost us, he could get 8 mil per season, his defensive numbers are not bad like some think, that is what I think he will cost at minimum, do you guys want to give Yandle 8 - 9 mil per season for 5 plus seasons, if you say yes then we have to agree to disagree, but if you think we can get him cheaper, then I hope you guys are right, but think about what you are saying we should sign.
Plus
PaulN : 10/14/2015 2:58 pm : link
If we do trade him, I think he could get us a 1st and 2nd rounder. So do you trade him for a 1st and 2nd, or do you sign him to a 6 year/50 mil contract. I say trade him. Unless my numbers are off, that is what I think anyway.

Chicago, Tampa, Montreal, Islanders, Penguins, Flyers, Blue Jackets, Caps, Kings, Ducks, Bruins.

That's 11 very dicey and/or overextended trade partners.

I guess I didn't mean "how do we not have the players?" but rather, "how do you think the players we have shouldn't be able to do the job? And why can't the guys we have fill these roles you are claiming we are missing?"

There have been many, many maaaaany teams throughout the years with working PP's that don't have players who are nearly as ideal for any and all the roles needed for a good PP.

All good if you really don't think so but I don't really agree...which is why it's the single most confusing thing about the Rangers teams over the last many years. Different coaches, different players, different strategies, different formations...nothing seems to matter. It is insanely weird.
.
BrettNYG10 : 10/14/2015 5:04 pm : link
I'm with Seth - no reason this can't be a top ten unit. AZ and NJ were 7th and 8th last year.
Anyone else
SethFromAstoria : 10/14/2015 5:20 pm : link
think that based on the fact that we have a good coach who clearly knows how to build rosters that are really good, it seems very unlikely that he is the only person on earth who doesn't recognize that he has 2 better options to play than Glass. And therefore perhaps its possible, if not likely, that the reason he plays and plays as much as he does, is to try to get any other team to bite and trade us anything, any asset for him? I think it makes sense that they are trying to get anything for him before they put him through waivers. Otherwise it makes no sense more because of the depth we have than anything, that he continues to see ice.
Seth I'd be more open to that scenario...
Torrag : 10/14/2015 5:22 pm : link
...if he hadn't been the worst player in the NHL last year and got ice time from AV then as well. But I hope you're right cuz he's a fuckin' sled.
right
SethFromAstoria : 10/14/2015 5:28 pm : link
but last year we didn't have 2 guys sitting there in the press box waiting to play. And again he really was not at all bad in the playoffs. This year though, I find it completely impossible to believe that the organization trades Hagelin and would be ok with Etem not playing in favor of Glass. THere has to be some sort of understanding that they sent Diaz down, Diaz gave them a month to find him a role, and Glass is superfluous and pointless but they want to try to get even a 7th rounder for him. Thats what makes sense to me anyway.
Speaking of Etem
MetsAreBack : 10/14/2015 5:31 pm : link
are there rules for how long he can sit in a press box without getting exposed to waivers? The guy has splinters in his ass by now (*note: I doubt he ever becomes much for us, we did that trade i guess for the forward draft pick - but i'd rather see what the kid has or doesnt have than roll #15 out there)
He was bad in the playoffs
Torrag : 10/14/2015 5:31 pm : link
He looked slightly better because he was so fucking ridiculously bad in the regular season that there was nowhere to go but up.
That scenario is just wishful thinking
Deej : 10/14/2015 5:35 pm : link
Glass is playing because AV thinks that he gives us the best chance to win (not necessarily in a specific game; could be long term that we'll need him at some point and you need to keep him game ready etc.). Simplest explanation.

I respect AV a lot as a coach. But he just seems to have a massive blind spot for Glass. Or more likely, the purported value of the grit (and leadership??) qualities Glass brings to the table. AV gets that Glass is a possession sink -- he has said so and has made other comments suggesting that he understand that having the puck is very important (rather than a dump & chase or "it's only the results that matter" ethos). I think the GM should step in soon. Etem needs reps too.
MAB
SethFromAstoria : 10/14/2015 5:37 pm : link
but Etem really can be good. He really has a lot of assets as a player. I think the only reason they'd trade him is because there is no room. I still think they'd be dumb to not try him out there because maybe with this team, in this system, he could live up to potential more ala Brassard.

Agreed about Glass in the playoffs but watching the games, he was effective at doing what he is capable of doing. Maybe it looked better than it was because he was ineffective in nearly every other game but he didn't look like a bad player in the playoffs for a 4th line guy. Even contributed to some offensive zone plays.

Anyway, I bet he's gone within the next few weeks.

From your lips to Gorton's ears...
Glass was better in the playoffs
MetsAreBack : 10/14/2015 5:41 pm : link
but he still weighed down our 4th line which ended up far worse offensively than it produced in 2014. Certainly the 3rd lines inexperience and unproductive play didnt help either but the bottom line is we were a 2 line scoring team last April/May and we dont have the lottery picks on those top two lines to beat the best teams in the league that way.

Need to get back to rolling 4 scoring lines. The good news is we have the assets this year to get that done - just need to play the right players.

I'm hopeful on Etem too but he never produced much for Anaheim (yes, I know he's young) and the GM/Coach did not have great things to say about him this pre-season ('average showing' ... etc) - hopefully just motivational speak here, but its possible we bought a turd.
AV loves Fast
SethFromAstoria : 10/14/2015 5:41 pm : link
he has said so many many times and plays him like he does. AV doesn't think Glass is better than Fast nor is he better for the team. THere's zero possibility of that being true in my mind. He may be a bit stubborn but he's seen Fast and Glass play...there isn't even a conversation there.
How do you guys feel about Tanner Glass?

I just realized they didn't penalize him. That is not funny but it's very funny at the same time.

THe NHL is amazing at doing exactly the wrong thing at the most opportune times. WHen someone from Dallas asks the refs and the league how they could miss something so egregious when the puck is right there and the guy is 4 feet from the boards, how can they answer that with a straight face?
