He's in his final year and will be unrestricted free agent. He has established himself as a top corner. Has anything been said if they are actively trying to resign this guy? Seems to me with them saving 900k per week from JPP that this should be a Top priority for our GM
However, you can safely wager his agent is eyeballing the area between what Maxwell signed for in Philly and the level above him ($10-12M per, at least). That's a tough price even for a very good, ascending CB.
If Prince can make it through the season healthy, he will have all the leverage. But he has to realize that anything can happen in the next eleven games (plus the playoffs and Super Bowl).
If I was a betting man, I would bet that a deal will be done before the end of the season (assuming he doesn't shave his chest or eat by himself).
Given how pass happy the NFL is these days and how Prince has shown to be an excellent (not outstanding) corner, when Prince's agent says:
I'd be inclined to do so.
A team's salary cap isn't ruined by plus players who don't measure up to their bigtime salaries, it's ruined by plus players with bigtime salaries who either can't stay on the field or who turn out to be JAGs.
It's not only about having enough cap space, injuries in the past are part of the decision, as are other factors.
Offer him a fair contract or let him walk..Hankins when he is eligible, deserves the big bucks if he continues to ascend..Not guys in the secondary..And Prince has been an injury waiting to happen, imv
It's harder to find good CBs than it is to find good DTs. Ergo the Giants history of using first round picks on corners and second round pick on defensive tackles.
For that reason I believe the Giants will be willing to overpay for Prince, but they won't overpay for Hankins. It would be different if Hankins was a force as an interior pass-rusher, but I think last year's stats were more the aberration than a future indicator. Hankins will play out his four years with the team and then hit the market. And once he is a free agent, it becomes likely that he won't be back. Think Linval Joseph.
You don't let your Draft picks go like that, you pay em.
Doesn't matter anyway .... 2007, 2011, and now 2015. Time for another Superbowl Gentlemen (and Ladies).
And, by time 2019 rolls around we will be set with 2 shiny brand new corners.
Definitely don't pay him tier 1 $$$ Jerry Reach.
He's still doing well against the run, but is not getting the push in pass rush situations that he did a year ago. The guy had 7 sacks from the DT position; that's pretty impressive, but he's not doing it this year yet!
You can't put a huge % of your cap in the hands of just a couple of players, especially when you are already paying a franchise qb.....that just leaves less for the rest of the supporting cast.....
That's why GM's get the big bucks.....
Take a look at the Patriot's cap salaries....who is the most valuable player on that team? And he is isn't the highest paid(ave. salary)...he isn't even the second highest paid....our qb is getting paid more than twice as much, as the next highest paid player....a huge discrepancy in salaries....this is why drafting is so important...locking up several players for 4 years, at low salaries to help manage the cap.....but sooner or later, if those guys excel, they have to be paid, or you must have a backup plan in place......
The GM can become your team's MVP....I mentioned in another post, what happened when Vereen signed with the Giants...BB signed Lewis, at 1/4 what we paid Vereen, and he is as good, if not better, than Vereen....deals like that don't happen every day......but the Pats have a knack for going out and getting guys that can produce on the field, and not pay a lot for them....
That's why these guys have agents, separates emotion from things. Agent gets to be the dick and get the guy the money...for a fee of course. I would not expect this no matter how likable the Prince is.
This headline got my attention a few days ago. Upon reading, he's apparently "only" looking to rent, not to buy, but you figure there's at least a lease. And that his wife likes NYC living.

Mods?
At the same time, though, he should either get Prince into a second contract for a song or let him walk because he's not worth overpaying.
The team already needs some pass rushers in the offseason. It's going to be awfully hard to build a better defense if Reese also needs to address a new hole in the secondary.
If Reese drafts someone not worth a second contract, he sucks.
If Reese drafts someone worth a second contract, but another team throws ridiculous money at the draftee, he sucks.
Prince will likely command big dollars. Reese can either pay it, or let him walk. 'fair market value' is a meaningless term. there's a few FA who will get way more than fair market value. Prince is likely one of them. there's a notch down, where teams won't pay big dollars until they show something more (or continue to show). these guys go with a short term deal. Or you go with a guy who is OK to good, and recognizes he's not going to get a premium deal, so he accepts a darn good deal. After that you have backups who are either happy to have any deal or fighting for a good backup deal or hoping they can convince a team to consider them one tier up.
any way you look at it, at a premier position such as CB, expect to overpay for any one who starts. You have to really overpay to keep a good one or to lure a good one away from another team.
He isn't a top 10 guy.
If Prince wants the big bucks, he needs to come back strong from this injury and finish out the year on a high note. A pick six in the Super Bowl will go a long way towards getting him that deal!
