NFT: Knicks chat: Enzo, very positive NY Post story on Williams

Quote:
Turnovers and inconsistent defense could linger as issues once the regular season commences Oct. 28 in Milwaukee. In July, a source close to Karl lamented Williams’ low basketball IQ and expressed concern he could master Jackson’s convoluted scheme.
But Anthony saw signs of this Williams explosion when they scrimmaged informally in September and the LA product arrived in superb shape.
“I don’t think I’m surprised,’’ Anthony said. “You guys don’t see what we’ve seen throughout training camp, practice. It’s paying off. He came into camp in great condition and shape. Coming here really challenged him to see how good a shape he can get in.’’
Fisher loves Williams’ ability to play multiple positions and believes if nurtured, Williams will soar at the Garden like never before.
“We believe if we can make him feel comfortable here and that he’s valued not just as a basketball player but as a man and that we’re behind him 100 percent, we can create a program around him that will help him be at his best,’’ Fisher said.

The other point from this is that all of the Knicks except Vujacic are flying nearly blind when it comes to the triangle. Let's see how they look 15 games into the season, assuming that they learn it.

George Karl doesn't like a guy? Shocker!

I think Williams will be fine off the bench as an instant offense type. Grant will get those second-teamers a ton of easy buckets.
The low BBIQ is obvious

I dont know whether that gets better. Sure hope it does. But even w/o it he can be a somewhat useful player. He's a very good athlete. You have to at least account for him out there.
like I said in the other thread

I really hope I'm wrong. But this guy has done nothing thus far to convince anyone he can rebound, shoot, pass, dribble, or play defense at an acceptable level. If he could do just ONE of those things well it would be a different story. Usually when you make an attempt at an "under the radar" upside signing the player has shown some sort of projectable skill or talent that will improve in a better situation. I'm just not seeing it with this guy. And the contract is an obvious bet on this guy realizing whatever potential he might have, but the player option doesn't lock in the upside.
He shot pretty well last game -

8 for 12 from the field, 2 for 2 from 3 point range. However, he also had 6 turnovers. What I see is a guy who is the most athletic player on the Knicks and can sometimes score in bunches, but is inconsistent. I also agree that he could rebound better given his size and energy level. He doesn't always seem to know what to do next on the floor. All that said, I think he is playing his way on to the second team as Melo's backup. I thought it would be Early, but he hasn't impressed me all that much so far.
Williams is a chucker a la JR

But sometimes a guy like that can be a good sixth man, providing instant offense.

Like people have said, these type of underachieving guys generally don't work out. But I think it was worth a 5 million dollar flyer or whatever it was
Another really positive article on Williams...

this on a blog.

My view of him is that he isn't stupid athletically, kinda in the middle, but that he has fallen behind coaching-wise. He really seems committed to catching up. He has the double challenge of making up for all of the coaching that didn't take, and learning the triangle at the same time. And if he does, it really sounds to me as if the Knicks would likely get a discount to keep him, even if it meant renegotiating his player option price.

In my optimal scenario, he anchors the second team scoring-wise and limits Melo's minutes, and can even step in once in a while if Melo misses a game. But we will have to see how he progresses.

Underachieving guys come in four types.
manh george : 10/13/2015 11:22 pm : link
1) Players whose talent doesn't translate to the pros.

2) Players who do not have the drive.

3) Players who don;t have the maturity and never will,

4) Players who need to grow up, and eventually do.

There are only a few in the fourth category. There are some signs that this is where Williams fits, but only time will tell. At the very least, he spent an awful lot of the off-season in the gym, a positive sign.
Some players

are just so athletically gifted they can get by through HS, and College but when they hit the pro's it doesn't work. Some recognize it and some don't.

Marbury was always a mystery to me because he was very successful at times.
Marbury had a specific quirk.
manh george : 10/13/2015 11:45 pm : link
Larry Brown saw it. Marbury had all of the ball-handling skills of a point guard, but no spacial sense, so he didn't know how to properly set up his teammates. Maybe he could have overcome that, but he seemed too stubborn to put in the time and effort.
