best returner in giants history?

mirwin : 10/28/2015 8:35 pm
after seeing dwayne harris and remembering the last return we ha was dave wilson in 2012 i thought about this.

a few come to mind dixon, megett, hixon, and wilson

some others brian mitchell, darius reynaud, and i guess for fun jason sehorn were not too good at returning the rock.

Who do you think was the best as a returner ?
Leon Bright

ex-Canadian football player who never fair caught a punt
Dave Meggett

is my favorite.
Emlen Tunnel

Not my favorite ...

because he is a demented, psychopath who is in jail for a VERY, VERY long time ... but ... I would say Meggett was the best returner for the NYG ... 89 - 94 . ... He had so many punt returns for TDs ... and several KO returns for TDs in the time he played here.
David Wilson was exclusively a KR
David in LA : 10/28/2015 8:57 pm : link
IMO he was the best KR. As for PR? I'd have to say Meggett, and then Hixon.
Freddie Mitchell
BigBlueDownTheShore : 10/28/2015 8:57 pm : link
Best return man to wear our uniform, but didn't do so well as Giant.

Freddie Mitchell looked great against the Eagles ;)
I always glance at Mike in West Palm Beach

Anyway, I'm going Dave Meggett.
Brian Mitchell was definitely the worst

The question was returner not human being. I don't recall major issues while he was a Giant. He was a key part of the success under Parcells
Clarence Childs has to be in the discussion.
yatqb : 10/28/2015 9:01 pm : link
Meggett was great. By the time I saw Tunnell, I don't think he was returning kicks any more, but I was young then, so can't be sure.

^^^ right here. The most fearless punt returner ever. LIke PEEJ said he never had a fair catch. He would catch that ball and would get blasted.

That being said, I think Meggett had more of a spectacular career returning kicks.
God that Reynaud trade was awful in hindsight
jgambrosio : 10/28/2015 9:11 pm : link
and we all had such high hopes. Didn't we get Sage Rosenfels in that deal too?

It's too bad Dixon wasn't such a dipshit and hurt his knee. Loved the promise he showed.

Never saw Tunnell so have to go with Meggett as fucked up as he is.

David Wilson was the Giants best kick returner EVER? REALLY?!?

Man that has to be the stupidest thing i have read on any forum anywhere ever.
Wilson obviously didn't have the longevity
David in LA : 10/28/2015 9:22 pm : link
but he was a threat to break one every time. Before his first KO return for a TD, he was very very close to busting a few more. I was born in the mid 80's. I can only speak to what I was exposed to.

Maybe not the best,

I understand. He was my favorite player back in the day and it sucks that he ended up being a low life serving a life term (I think). But when it comes to the best returner he wins hands down.
In my life time
ron mexico : 10/28/2015 9:43 pm : link
Wilson had the most ability. Too bad he didn't get a chance to find out.
Yeah, Meggett was the best anyone born in the 80s has seen...
an_idol_mind : 10/28/2015 9:43 pm : link
And I hope somebody comes along to totally take his place in that regard because the only time I ever want to hear his name again is when listing people who are guaranteed to rot in Hell.
How does not calling for a fair catch

Probably has to be Emlen Tunnel but I remember Rocky Thompson

Yeah he was fearless but I don't see that as making him the best at returning the ball.
I dunno
mrvax : 10/28/2015 10:03 pm : link
but Wilson just needed a little block and it was game over. The kid could fly and he was shifty. It's a damn shame the Oline was horrific when he did have a chance at RB.

At least we got to see what he could do during his amazing KO returns. It was a good pick gone bad. I hope he has a great career doing something a lot safer.
Emlen Tunell. We can debate the best of the rest.
Ivan15 : 10/28/2015 10:04 pm : link
Historically, the kick returner and punt returner were not always the same.

Clarence Childs was a really good kickoff returner. His stride made it look like he could accelerate through a hole at any time.

Wilson could have been the best if he played a couple of more years.

Meggett was a very good punt returner. His kickoff returns were not as memorable.
I never saw Tunell play
AP in Halfmoon : 10/28/2015 10:14 pm : link
but Meggett has more TDs and better stats in much less time. Tunell did it for 11 years which in itself is impressive

Leon Bright - I remember one hit he took, I believe it was against Dallas. I don't remember the exact details, he either got leveled before the ball got to him, or it was a rare fair catch that the Dallas player ran right threw him. Nasty hit, a youtube search came up with nothing.

Meggett for punts
Dixon for kicks
Yeah Meggett was a tremendous punt returner
Greg from LI : 10/29/2015 1:02 am : link
But only a fair kick returner. Dixon was probably the best kick returner, or maybe Willie Ponder.
Amani deserves to be in the discussion
Rico : 10/29/2015 1:02 am : link
Before he cracked the lineup as a receiver, he was a really good punt returner for a couple years, one of our best ever.
Jason Sehorn

Willie Ponder (that one year)

only because he's my cousin

but speaking of Jason Sehorn. I sat two seats from him at the Eagles x Panthers game Sunday night. very cool guy.
David Wilson

Played one full year and set the single season record for KO returns. Meggett is a scumbag as a person but the best at PR in my memory.

mgreenie03 : 10/29/2015 7:27 am : link
for a short time he was pretty good. The KO return vs NE was huge even in a loss. He had a nice return vs Dallas a few yrs ago as well.

Meggett was still my favorite
Link - ( New Window )
Hixon was great
Essex : 10/29/2015 8:06 am : link
. . . Meggett was good, but I feel that Hixon and Wilson were better, if only for the short times they handled the duties.
what, no love for Ron Dixon

Wilson could have been but I don't think he did it long enough
Curtis in VA : 10/29/2015 8:18 am : link
to be considered, very unfortunately.

Has to be Dave Meggett. And to not choose him because of his personal issues is like someone asking the question of who was the best linebacker or RB in Giants history and not choosing Lawrence Taylor or Tiki Barber.

And who took one of the most vicious hits I've ever seen on a return (I think it was Detroit, 1982).
Rocky Thompson
yalebowl : 10/29/2015 8:30 am : link
He returned to kickoffs for touchdowns. He should have never been a number 1 draft choice. But he was a decent enough running back on some very awful Giant teams in the 70s. Because of his speed he was drafted to be a WR and kick returner. Total waste of a number one pick as he could have been drafted in a much later round.

Tough call between Tunnell & Meggett.
truebluelarry : 10/29/2015 9:09 am : link
Aside from numerous returns for touchdowns, they were both reliable (good ball security) and consistent (gaining positive yards even when not taking the ball back all the way.)

I recall Ron Dixon as not being a very good returner, and was often in Jim Fassel's dog house for not reading coverage or following blocks, his primary instinct was to run diagonally in a straight line. He was incredibly fast, as his two returns in the 2000 post season attest, but he never realized his full potential (that is true for him as a receiver as well.)
Meggett

Yeah probably Meggett with
Jimmy Googs : 10/29/2015 9:44 am : link
Tunnell close behind.

Meggett was actually somewhat of weapon when the Giants had a good team but didn't score all that much...
punt returner
Les in TO : 10/29/2015 10:23 am : link
Meggett and it's not even close. Toomer was solid as a punt returner in his rookie season, but DM was the man year in year out.

Kick returner - I think Harris will end up being the best, but right now there's no one that really stands out like meggett on punts. In modern times, Wilson and Ponder both had solid seasons in 2012 and 2004 respectively.
Agree with TBL here..
