Eli Manning - QB - NY Giants

SethFromAstoria : 11/2/2015 4:01 am
Wasn't satisfied by the Eli threads we had yesterday, especially on the heels of such a superb performance where the best QB in Giants history nearly was able to make up for a defense that looked so bad it almost seemed like they tried harder to allow TD's than stop them (aside from DRC). I personally enjoyed watching him (and only him) play yesterday for our beloved Giants and feel sympathetic that he gets a L on his record because no one else could even fake caring about the result of the game as much as he did. I am sure most of you feel the same way.

He also has the misfortune of being the only QB to lose a game with 6 TD's and 0 INT's in NFL history, all while having a career day for TD's thrown. Which is fitting because he also moved up the all time list for TD passes and is getting closer to jumping some other All Time greats in yards passing. Ideally the last few remaining holdout Giants fans will see the light and understand his place on the Giants and in the NFL. It's not likely. However there are those milestones coming up to remind everyone a bunch more times. Awesome game and a special appreciation for his level of play on a day when so many Giants so poorly represented the team.

Eli is a very, very good QB with two truly outstanding attributes:

1) He is unbelievably durable.
2) He has played some of his best football on the biggest stage.

He's not Tom Brady, or prime Peyton Manning. He's Eli, and he's great in his own way. But if you start citing statistics as evidence of his greatness, you may have to eat your words the next time he has a five-turnover game.

Yesterday, he threw the ball as well as he ever has, which was great to see. He also had two really bad fumbles - one where the ball simply slipped out of his hand, and another where he saw the pressure coming but failed to protect the ball. (That's on the QB, no matter how bad the blocking is, unless he somehow saw the flag and knew it was a free play.) Neither fumble ultimately led to a turnover, but I think the talk of Eli playing a perfect game is a bit overblown.
Dude is the best Giants QB

of my lifetime. All the people who bitch about him are going to miss him when he's gone. I don't even want to think where we'd be without him. 0-16?

The guy should accumulate 400 tds and 60k yards if he has 4 seasons playing at the level of 2014 Ryan Tannehill. That will place him in the top 5-7 all time at those marks. I don't think you can keep him out of the HOF at that point.
He's terrific.....

people get caught up in calling him "elite", and that's where all the arguements take off.

Best way to describe Eli, is he's a franchise QB.

That says it all. And a champion.

No offense but you managed to miss the whole point and prove that people view him through some sort of critical and unrealistic idea of what he should be. If you could watch that game and point to plays like the fumbles, it just goes to show that there is some idea that other QBs don't have things like that happen. He may gave had a damn near perfect game but here is why it wasn't perfect. It's the way it's been for him his whole career.

Its not even worth the breath. On a day where he comes in top 10 all time in TD passes, throws 6 TDs, completes 75% of his passes, and probably has one of the greatest offensive days in the history of our franchise.... Blogger will still come here and find reasons to put him down.

Same story every week with the same posters. I am tired of hearing how "lucky" Eli is every week. Is he so lucky to be blessed with bad OLine and a terrible set of receiving corps outside OBJ?
You've got BBB pegged all wrong.

Yup. My favorite player ever, Phil Simms, was a bit of a turnover machine for much of his career. Didn't make me love him any less, but I didn't deny he could be sloppy with the football at times.

BTW, another wonderful thing about Eli is that he doesn't give any more of a sh!t about the 6 TDs than I do. The fourth-down heave to Harris showed how completely indifferent Eli is to stats. It could easily have been picked; maybe it should have been. But throwing it up for grabs was the right play, and Eli was happy to risk his QB rating for a chance at a win.

I mentioned the fumbles because they reflect an integral part of Eli's character: he's always trying to make a play, which is the biggest reason he will probably, over the course of any given season, turn the ball over more often than than a game-manager QB - even in a WCO that reduces the opportunities for catastrophe.
Why Does Eli Manning Never Receive Proper Credit?
SethFromAstoria : 11/5/2015 1:04 am : link
New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning was nothing short of amazing last Sunday. He carved up the New Orleans Saints’ defense for 350 yards and six touchdowns. Manning completed 73.2 percent of his passes that game as well. Those are some pretty great numbers for someone who some consider not to be considered elite.

Among all quarterbacks, Manning ranks seventh in passing yards, fourth in touchdown passes, and still has interceptions in single digits. As most Giants’ fans know for all too long, the words “Eli Manning” and “single digit interceptions” don’t go together very often. Manning has clearly changed his play for the better.

In the process, he already broke two records this year, passing Joe Montana in the all time passing yards and touchdowns lists. He’s clearly in elite company on those lists and no analyst can take that away from him. If he keeps this up, he’s on pace for having a career year. Who says that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

What is very strange is that not one major sports network this year has given Manning proper credit. Andy Dalton has received credit for his resurgence and so has Carson Palmer. Everyone was so high on Sam Bradford going into the year. Even though that quickly fizzled out, analysts were already saying he could be among the elite. Cam Newton is getting very high praise for the work he’s doing with the Carolina Panthers as well.

Nothing should be taken away from any of these great players, but credit is due where it is due. One could argue that the Giants are .500, but in reality how much of it is really Manning’s fault? Almost none to be exact. If anything, he’s been keeping the team in games every week. Manning can’t be scolded for his game against the Saints because he showed what kind of firepower he has. The Giants’ defense totally collapsed.

Manning is carrying the Giants right now and hopefully by the end of the season he will get his credit for leading the Giants to the playoffs once again. By the way things seem, if Manning gets a third ring by the end of his career their will still be analysts saying he’s not elite. So it will most likely never stop
