In 2003, as the back judge for the San Francisco 49ers–New York Giants Wild Card game, I missed a key pass interference call. It would have offset another penalty and given the Giants one more play to possibly win the game.
If I remember correctly, the penalty on the Giants was illegal man downfield, which was also incorrectly called on Rich Seubert since he was an eligible receiver. Am I remembering it wrong?
The Giants lost that game, sure, but in a vacuum Â
the non-call on the fumble in Green Bay in the NFCCG was a much worse call. There was a lot going on in the scramble after the botched snap. It was a rare situation and it's not surprising a mistake was made. But to have the benefit of replay, use it, see the knee wasn't down the same way all of America saw it...and still rule no fumble? Only time in my life I've truly wondered if the fix was in...
for illegal man downfield, but it wasn't on Seubert (Ian Allen, maybe)- it was on a different lineman. Seubert reported as being eligible.
Green said pass interference wasn't called because the foul happened on the illegal man downfield. They realized immediately after the game it was a mistake.
What is ironic is that if they didn't call a foul because the thinking that the player was ineligible, why did they call a facemask last week on a play that was technically supposed to be dead? We get screwed every which way - especially on Sundays!

no, you've got it. Seubert reported as eligible.

That's what killed me. The play was over as soon as NO recovered the fumble. How do you call that penalty during a dead ball? Argh...this one is still lingering. Sunday can't come fast enough...

Yup. I truly felt the fix was in to get the Packers back to the Super Bowl. That call made no sense. Clear as day fumble. Conclusive.

the GB fumble correctly ruled at first, but didn't they come back after the commercial and say the call had been REVERSED??
Reversed after evidence showed the initial call was correct? It was almost like Leavy decided on his own what the call would be.
I fully believe something underhanded happened that day. Is that the same game with the bogus personal foul roughing the passer taht extended a Packers drive?
RE: I will never forget Collinsworth in that game Â
yeah

it would not have been offset penalties
it was the wrong call
we would have gotten the ball on the 1 yard line
It would've been offsetting penalties. Another lineman was downfield. It would have been a re-try of the FG from the previous spot.
Bad calls against the Giants are almost always on the road. Â
the one who acknowledged Seubert as an eligible receiver. Winter, as the head referee, should have overruled Green, which he did not do. I hated Winter ever since and came to realize what a lousy official he was.
Green made a mistake, yes, but a proper head referee would have consulted and got this right. Winter did not.
guy said "The best thing is, the NFL admitted they made a mistake".
No. The best thing would've been to drag the teams back onto the field and replay the kick, seeing that it was a correctable error and the refs knew about it as soon as they got to the locker room.
I was unusually calm. I was on the phone an hour later with a poster here named Giant Mike. I kept reassuring him that because it was a correctable error, they would replay the kick. He's like, "Fats, the teams are gone from the stadium" and I just kept insisting they would do it the next day or even in Tampa the following week.
is the reason I can't respect Aaron Rodgers or Mike McCarthy to this day. They're both obviously good at what they do, but the refs tried to do everything they could to keep them in that game and they still acted like whiny excuse making bitches afterwards.
is that if the Niner defender just let the OL catch the ball and immediately tackled him, the game is over as time runs out. Pass interference was the only positive outcome possible except maybe an incomplete pass had time still remained on the clock (don't remember).
Once the snap was botched and the holder decided to heave it down the middle of the field (I believe a throw any other place is intentional grounding, and maybe not enough time to get out of bounds to stop clock)....you're looking at a 0.05% chance of winning assuming you can get another play.
How often has pass interference ever been called on a pass to an OL in NFL history? That's a stat I'd be curious to see. Eligible or not, it's something I'd like to know.
He is very correct, though. The one thing that allows me to make some peace with that ending is we never should have even close to that situation in the first place.
In short, that play was not the reason we lost the game.
which makes it seem like he was looking somewhere else. it's impossible to believe that he didn't see the main action of the play, so what is he saying?
he didn't think there was contact? he didn't want to throw the flag on such a big play? what was it?
I know it's not the main point of his article, but full disclosure please
I watched that game at my uncles house and drove the entire hour back home in stony silence. No radio, no music, no post-game show. I was a racecar-in-the-red guns-of-the navarone mushroom cloud layin' motherfucker ready to blow.

Same here. He was a clown then and he still is today.

Very few bad calls against Giants' opponents when the Giants are at home. The Metlife crowd isn't nasty enough.
"Tackling by the helmet"?
I sometimes believe there is more to the game when you see some crazy bad calls, I think they want ratings so to fudge on a few calls on purpose...

It's sort of like Kennedy's security detail saying only one shooter got close enough to get off some shots.
