How do you cover Gronk?

RForlan789 : 11/14/2015 4:27 am
This is going to be a sad affair on the Giants part. Look at the schedule for Sunday, the universe of football really loves the Eagles. We're going to get embraced by the the likes of the Patriots and then Eagles get Miami. How is this scheduling fair?

Gronk vs this secondary and LBers? yea, ok!
This is getting annoying

The Giants have yet to beat an elite QB since 2012 and meanwhile Mr. Jeese sits with his thumb up his you know what about the linebacker situation!! I am super pissed that I have a dentist appointment during the game but you gotta do what you gotta do, look at the bright side the Giants have an easy schedule after the Pariots game...

Redskins, Jets, Dolphins = Easy wins
Carolina, and Minnesota = So fucking tired of hearing about these two teams. Cam Newton is so fucking overrated it is not even funny, overrated running QB with a garbage arm who is like 12 feet tall. I read on here someone said he was doing things that were never heard of. What about Michael Vick???

Look, Minnesota isn't hard to stop. Mike Wallace? No. All you should be concerned about is that Peterson is on the field. Put 10 guys in the box because you know Teddy Bridgewater can't do anything. I've been up all night, baby! #GOUSA #PrayersForFrance #DontfuckwithAmerica #DontfuckwiththeGiants!
Here's how....

The Patriots offense is designed to attack your weaknesses
blueblood : 11/14/2015 8:01 am : link
They will find ways to attack you even if you were able to take Gronk out of the game.
I'd put
NYG4246 : 11/14/2015 8:20 am : link
DRC on him all day, which will put scrubs hosley and wade on the outside but id rather see DRC on him then Unga...

Maybe double team him with Casillas and Collins, idk though neither one of them are exactly burners.

Dline needs to step up. doesnt matter who covers who if they dont

They won't beat a top QB until they get better defense either. They don't even have to be top 10, but there has to be a better pass rush and coverage has to be better. Then you have a chance, especially when your QB is capable of outstanding efforts week in and week out. Against the average and inexperienced we will always have a chance, but odds diminish greatly when you can't help your team on defense, been a modicum.
With that said, Reese knows what his task is in the offseason.....
Simms11 : 11/14/2015 8:34 am : link
And that's to build a much better defense.

Doomster : 11/14/2015 9:14 am : link
They adjust, as the game progresses....you cover Gronk short, next thing you know he's doing deep seam passes....or they split him outside on someone like Hosley/Mcbride, and he is taking them for a piggy back ride....

Or if you devote too much coverage on him, then Brady goes elsewhere...

This guy is the best TE in the NFL, because he can block also....Spags has to disguise his coverages, and hope for turnovers, because they are not going to stop this offense otherwise...I have seen this offensive line, face injury after injury this season, and yet, they manage to function as a unit....this is the only achilles heel of this offense....Brady is like any other qb....if you can put pressure on him, he will make mistakes....the problem is, this DL has problems creating that......even if they don't get there, make Brady "throw through the trees".....

What a coincidence
Our Offense is designed to attack the enemy weaknesses too

Bring them on. I don't see them talking at all
they respect and likely to some extent fear the Giants

Here is an interesting fact- In Vareen and Merriweather we have two of their recent former players

We undoubtedly have intelligence on everything they do, how they think, how they prepare etc etc
We get the dolphins aND the eagles get the pats too

I really miss Blackburn
So do the Giants

We fell for the fools gold of Beason and let a very solid player walk for peanuts....infuriating for sure

Last time I remember someone stopping Gronk 40yds downfield
it was Blackburn taking the ball from him for a game changing interception

I agree!

Seriously, I think you need to have a mix of a LB & Safety double coverage man, some DRC man on man and zones.

You need to make sure Gronk doesn't kill you; he will hurt you.

The Patriots
CMicks3110 : 11/14/2015 10:42 am : link
OL is in shambles, I think Gronk is going to be asked to block quite a bit. They have Bryan Stork as there starting RT tomorrow. Enough said.
Let me put you inthe right Zen frame of mind
EVERY4YEARS : 11/14/2015 10:43 am : link
So you can make your butter popcorn and enjoy the game

1- The Patriots have beaten nobodies and have not been tested
2- They don't need the win- We do
3- We will out hit them- we are more physical

4- their oline is banged up and QB immobile
5- Spags knows this and he will turn up the blitz

6- We will win the turnover battle and we are at home
7- Their HC and QB respect us and fear us, we don't fear them at all- we will play loose and pummel them

8- Our offense is as good as theirs if not better- since we have a good oline we can protect our QB and run the ball
they cannot do either......they totally depend on a quick release, that will lead to turnovers (hits after catch)

This will be a blowout something like 38-17 but will be the Pats licking their wounds- not us

Enjoy the spectacle
I'm already having nightmares...
jnoble : 11/14/2015 11:46 am : link
..of one of our LBs running in vein trying to catch up to a wide open Gronk who is about to score (again)
Well sure
EVERY4YEARS : 11/14/2015 11:51 am : link
maybe that scenario will happen to allow the PATs to score 14
of the 17 I'm giving them

If we score 38 WHO CARES!!!!!
Its unfair that NYG play the Pats and Eagles play Miami...
Jimmy Googs : 11/14/2015 12:17 pm : link
You realize we both switch off in December and play the other team right?

Not sure what that has to do with question of your thread by the way.

But the best way to deal with Gronk is have Markus Kuhn land on him after the first play and break his leg or foot. Gronk will be out injured and Kuhn will be thrown out of game and suspended...which also improves our chances.

No one on the Giants can cover Gronk
pjcas18 : 11/14/2015 12:20 pm : link
I think Kam Chancellor is the kind of player you need and he couldn't even do it well.

What you need to do is disrupt him off the line, mess up the timing and gang tackle.

Break his leg?
EVERY4YEARS : 11/14/2015 12:33 pm : link
better question is how do you stop OBJ

I'd be willing to be that the Patriots fan sites are asking that question. It doesn't matter if the big threat is actually big or more diminutive.

We have a big threat also, who generally needs a double team to keep in check. He catches a lot of passes, generally for 1st downs, and particularly when we need a third down conversion; hence our 3rd down conversions are up this year. He also stretches the field, probably better than their "big guy".

Set those two guys aside (theirs and ours), then who is left to cause damage. I'd be willing to bet that it is a draw, with maybe a slight edge to us for a better OL, and an edge (slight or otherwise) to them for a better pass rush.

So maybe it just comes down to the QB who has the better day. Our guy has had better days in the last 5 years. So let's see. Talk is cheap, play the game.

Oh, and one other thing. It's a home game. Can our fans be loud enough to make a difference when TB goes audible? OK fans, that's where you can actually make a difference...
The difference between
pjcas18 : 11/14/2015 1:16 pm : link
stopping OBJ and stopping Gronk is let's say you succeed, on the Giants then you have what? Randle, Vereen, and a couple UDFA TE's?

On the Patriots you have Edelman, Ammendola, LaFell, and whoever replaces Lewis (White or Bolden).

so if you consider the Patriots typical game plan (take away one thing you're good at) and they do take away OBJ (not saying they can) then the Giants are forced to rely on others - and that hasn't worked out too well.

While on the Pats side, it has.

It will be interesting to see how each team approaches it on D and how the offenses respond.
Antonio Allen - a Jets S on IR since pre-season, had some success
Bob in Newburgh : 11/14/2015 1:18 pm : link
in prior years.

6'1" 210 decent athlete with CB cover skills and good ball awareness.

Normal S speed, not fast enough to play CB in anything other than dire emergency.

One of those strange situations where a player who was not good enough to be a regular starter in normal situations had the number of an All-Pro.

Not sure who was covering him:

Antonio Allen's career vs NE (Gronk's stats)
2012 (Allen's rookie year)

10-21-2012: 6 catches 78 yards 2 TDs
Allen didn't play the 2nd Jets Pats game that year.

2013
Gronk missed the first game due to injury
10-20-2013: 8 catches for 114 yards

2014:
10-16-2014 5 catches for 68 yards
12-21-2014 3 catches 31 yards and a TD

one game he was held under 5 catches and 50 yards and still scored a TD.

I'm not questioning you, because who knows whose got coverage on a given play, but that's some uninspiring success.

Did you leave Harris out on purpose or by oversight. Not just as a pass catcher either. We might have a significant ST advantage.

oversight. I like the Giants ST. Harris has exceeded my expectations, but he's been inconsistent as a receiver. We'll need the good Harris to show up tomorrow.
I would use the defensive end..
EricJ : 11/14/2015 4:28 pm : link
to jam him first. Hold him up without holding. Then with his slower start off of the line it will give the safety or LB a better shot at covering him.
The Giants offense?

I think you are vastly underestimating the Oline advantage
It will likely be a huge factor in this game

I expect we will do what we please, they will struggle to run or protect Brady
One thing to do with all the receivers including Gronk
Ira : 11/14/2015 8:46 pm : link
is to hit them in the first five yards. Brady is going to have to get rid of the ball quickly with that oline. If you can hit the receivers before they get started, that should make it difficult for him to find someone open.
Some of you are delusional
pjcas18 : 11/14/2015 9:02 pm : link
Ben Watson had 10 catches for 150 yards and a TD against the Giants and Brees is not Brady and the surrounding cast in NO is not as good as NE.

JPP won't make enough of a difference.

The tough thing about having a corner or safety
Jimmy Googs : 11/15/2015 8:05 am : link
on him is that they cannot get him on the ground after he catches it. Watched a lot of highlights with him this week, and he pushes guys to the ground fairly easily.

Need a very strong Safety-type or agile LB.

Not exactly on our roster...
