The 4th and 10

Fort Mill Mike : 11/16/2015 12:04 pm
I've not yet been able to go back and look at the recording. I just might delete it without re-watching. But, can someone break down for me what happened there?

I know it seems over simplified to think "don't let anyone get 10 yards passed the line of scrimmage!" but someone did and I'm curious who and maybe why? Did the defender slip or get faked out?
This is the play I keep coming back to
Mike in Long Beach : 11/16/2015 12:06 pm : link
even more so than the Collins' dropped INT. I don't have a technical breakdown for you, but for fuck's sake. God forbid we got a stop there.
Casillas backed up too much
djl8699 : 11/16/2015 12:07 pm : link
which gave Amendola the space to pick up that first down. Bad awareness by him on that play, if he stops at the sticks Brady has nowhere to throw.
Linebackers dropped back to far

plain and simple...
No blitz = first down

At least with this defense the last few years.
Casillas got too much depth
JonC : 11/16/2015 12:11 pm : link
similar to Unga on the goaline in past games, they lose awareness.
4th and 10..
Big Blue '56 : 11/16/2015 12:19 pm : link
Brady has done this for a living, as aggravating as it is..It's not exactly Bradford coming through on 4th and 10
Add to this that Casillais

sad thing is watching
bluepepper : 11/16/2015 12:29 pm : link
it I never doubted for a second that the Pats would convert that play. A 4 and out by this D against that O in a situation like that just wasn't going to happen. The missed turnover was our best shot. Brady f'd up and we didn't make him pay.
you can also add in the play before the FG attempt
UConn4523 : 11/16/2015 12:32 pm : link
where, and I forget which 2 players, over bit on Amendola's catch and spin to pick up an extra 4 or 5 yards. At 59 yards out Pats may spike the ball to go for the first down instead of the FG. And who knows what happens then.

UConn, pretty sure that was Casillas as well; I saw that happening immediately and said don't overcommit to his first turn. Poor awareness, particularly because Casillas (if it was he) had a S coming from the other direction to close down the exact move Casillas was reacting to. Not clever
came out of the slot

we were at the line and casillas gave to much ground in the center of the field - seen this before? Dallas/Unga.

it's also possible to say that, with the way our Safeties were playing, the LB felt he had to get deeper....):

UConn4523 : 11/16/2015 12:40 pm : link
sounds right. The safety being in position made it all the more frustrating that the LB bit so hard on it.
knew it was going to Amendola
Csonka : 11/16/2015 12:50 pm : link
before they even got in the huddle. with Edelman out and Gronk doubled ... no doubt. just a question of whether he'd get the 1st down.

Yea short and medium passing game is basically the entire Patriots. This is just another 10yd gain in context. I was MUCH more afraid of them breaking the big play deep. If have found losing that way much harder to take.

Thanks man. We actually bought a house in Springdale in August so i'm not longer in harbor point. Things are good though, been a crazy year so far (baby right after we moved into the house) and couldn't be happier.

How's everything with you?
Spags betted on getting the pass rush there...
BillKo : 11/16/2015 1:12 pm : link
and having coverage.

I would have blitzed and forced Brady to hit a hot receiver.......

In hindsight that's totally reasonable.
But with the game on teh line on 4th down and you blitzed... the BBI altakockers would be saying "live by the blitz and die by the blitz."
I think it would take huge stones to dial it up there. Everybody would be second guessing, instead of just analyzing.
The more painful play was the missed tackle by Kennard ...
Boy Cord : 11/16/2015 1:57 pm : link
... that set up the FG. On the other hand, had he made the tackle, Gostkowski may have ripped our hearts out with a 65 yard FG.

So glad this was regular season and the Giants play in a weak division, and conference, for that matter. Wild Card is in play as well. Did not think that was possible prior to season.
Why Spags doesn't go to six DBs there is beyond me
Vanzetti : 11/16/2015 2:06 pm : link
How many times do we have to see a receiver beat a LBer in that situation. You know the Patriots saw that on tape and were going to that play at the most crucial moment. They basically sent everyone downfield to let Amendola work one on one against the LB.

six DBs and blitz a LBer
Vanzetti : 11/16/2015 2:08 pm : link
I hate this conservative shit about worrying about the big play or the surprise run or screen. No guts, no glory. You have to pressure Brady in that situation and force a quick throw.

Which is why a good coaching staff calls TO once they see the formation. Same thing the didn't do in the first game against Dallas. And lets not forget that Casillais also blew the tackle on the last play which got them 6-7 yards closer for the FG. Fundamentals
Here is the All-22
BigBlueinChicago : 11/16/2015 8:43 pm : link
At the snap of the ball, Wade is lined up against Amendola. Casillas is lined up right at the yard to gain for the first down. His job to make sure any receiver does not get past that area in this spot.

A case can be made he should back up a little bit so he can align himself with the marker in the event he backs up too far as two other Giants defenders are located in the slot to his left (Patriots right).

Wade runs with him with one eye on the running back who begins to leak out of the backfield after the initial chip block.

Casillas begins to back up as the ball is snapped, but now finds himself at the 34 yard line as Amendola cuts and is right now at the first down marker as Brady releases his pass. Uh oh.

Casillas is now out of position to make the game winning play. Drive continues.

By far I'm no expert, but I see this a lot. It will be 3 and and 2 and I'll see our corners playing back ten yards or worse yet a player uncovered. Sometimes I'm sure it's the scheme, but others I can't for the life of me understand what they are doing.
Worst part of this play
SethFromAstoria : 11/17/2015 12:33 am : link
was there wasn;t a single one of us who thought we would make this stop and win the game. Literally 99 out of 100 Giants fans must have known we would let them convert this as we've done so frequently over the last 5 years.
Giants on 4th downs......Sigh
SethFromAstoria : 11/17/2015 1:02 am : link

So...

5 of 9 on 4th downs
only 1 incomplete pass by QB's on 4th downs (more than 4th and short)

On 3rd or 4th and Short...

- Opponents are 33/50 to get the 1st down. (66%)
- Runners average 4.5 yards per carry
- QB's are 21/31 with a rating of 98.2
