Even Giants coaches aren't exempt from Ereck Flowers' scowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Ereck Flowers is a great big 21-year-old grouch. It's one of the things the New York Giants like best about their rookie left tackle, but it can still take them aback when they see it first hand.

"I'll tell you a funny story," Giants offensive line coach Pat Flaherty said Monday. "Do you know he got mad at me when I worked him out before the Buffalo game?"

Even Giants coaches aren't exempt from Ereck Flowers' scowl - ( New Window )
I've read a lot about how his season has been up and down

Too many people have said as much for Layman like myself to dispute, but he passes the eye test for me every single Sunday.
I think he is going to be a good player
dep026 : 11/17/2015 1:09 pm : link
but he has really, really struggled the last few weeks. Seems like there is at least 1 penalty every game, and giving up constant pressure.
That was a fun read.

The thing about the sunday tv eye test
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/17/2015 1:16 pm : link
for offensive line, is that they're not on screen enough to really gauge their performance barring a major mistake that calls for a TV instant replay.

If Snee and Flaherty say he needs to improve in certain areas, I feel pretty confident that that's coming from an educated place.
Can't think....
Strip-Sack : 11/17/2015 1:20 pm : link
of too many rookie LT's that have done better starting from Day 1...probably a short list these days. Gotta love the kid!
The guy has a 'tude....
Doomster : 11/17/2015 1:24 pm : link
Playing a tough position as a rookie, he has done well....he has a way to go, but the potential is definitely there....
Hey, if he gives you the nasty scowl
Bill in UT : 11/17/2015 1:26 pm : link
just run past him on his left side, like everyone else does, lol
Great pick
AP in Halfmoon : 11/17/2015 1:28 pm : link
He's been very solid and will only get better
Many of us said we needed more nasty
dune69 : 11/17/2015 1:42 pm : link
on this team. This young man is a good start. Many watch the LT you-tubes and see a great athlete make great plays, but if you were not old enough to watch every game, you would not see the great amount of nastiness and playing hurt that LT brought to the team. I like this kid's attitude.
What should be noted
dep026 : 11/17/2015 1:45 pm : link
is that Beatty last3-4 years were all better than Flowers this year. I am hopeful on the kid, but lets be realistic on his performance this year.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/17/2015 1:46 pm : link
I wouldn't agree with that. Beatty had a very bad year right after he signed the contract.

Also, this line is playing with MUCH MORE toughness than it has in years...and Flowers has a lot to do with that.
He makes a ton of mistakes
armstead98 : 11/17/2015 1:47 pm : link
I love the pick but he's been a pretty big liability in pass pro. Every game there are a few plays where he lunges and the defender takes advantage to get some pressure on Eli.

As the coaches have said, he has a lot of work to do on his technique. It's all fixable.

But for now he's playing like a rookie.
The kid is a player and a leader. He has been solid. Yes, he gives up
Victor in CT : 11/17/2015 1:47 pm : link
the occasional pressure and gets beat, but those claiming that he gives up "constant" pressure are watching a different game than I am. He has been excellent for a rookie LT and is getting better every week.
I see him getting beat fairly regularly with speed to the outside

It's been a pleasant surprise but he is going to have to gut it out for the next 6+ games because his body is going to start tiring .I hope he did his off season lifting and took his condition Serious I think an off-season in the gym and we got ourselves one hell of an LT
Not sold on this pick

Everything down to Jerry making the pick in .5 seconds worries me.

Hopefully he proves me wrong
He could just as easily as OBJ have said i cost us the game
WillieYoung : 11/17/2015 2:03 pm : link
Unless my eyes were deceiving me the strip sack near the goal line was on him. He got overpowered by Chandler Jones who is not the biggest DE. Bad mistake at a critical time.

I agree and mentioned it in a thread within last 10 days.
He and Collins have already had a college season with 14 NFL-level games.
For them the bye is perfect to just rest, restore, heal for the next 10.
EF needs to pop up and speed up feet quicker for the speed rushers. He has the strength if he gets into the correct position on the initial contact.
Personally I thought we would run behind him more and let that nasty go forward.
This really would have been a great year to have him at Rt then move him to left next year, similar to the WR move from G to C.

You're right, Beatty was awful that year. But the point is we all were critical of Beatty and years in which he performed better than Flowers has this year. I think the OL has improved due to Richburg's move to center and Pugh to LG.

Now again, I think Flowers will be good and happy we took him. But I really dont think he has been anything but average this year. He has had some killer penalties and given up killer sacks this year.

LOL what about the supposed despondent looks in the war room after the Giants picked Odell. Remember that? Geezus.
Real treasures in this thread
BigBlueJ : 11/17/2015 2:25 pm : link
1. He is still hampered by injury
2. He is a rookie - they play like 10 games a year.
3. LT is a tough position for a rookie.
4. I swear to god most of you said you understood that rookies will make mistakes - these are mistakes rookies make. Right on schedule BBI taketh it back.
5. They are rookies.
He'll be an All-Pro RT for us for several years

Yes, I said RT.

Love what he brings.

Need to find his bookend at LT next year and go to war with that line for a decade.

From some of the comments...
Strip-Sack : 11/17/2015 2:30 pm : link
on this thread, you'd think the kid's been a turnstile...too funny. He's a rookie with some things to improve upon but no doubt a homerun of a first round pick.

yatqb : 11/17/2015 2:54 pm : link
is nuts. What do some of you expect of a rookie going against one of the best DEs in football?

The kid's a player, and he, Richburg and Pugh bring a lot of toughness and competitive fire to the left side of our line.
One thing that I think no one talks about
JOrthman : 11/17/2015 3:29 pm : link
Is overall the line has more of an attitude. In the past I've seen defenders push Eli around or get chippy on hits. This year when they try that the offensive line gets offensive and pushes back. One instance I recall, was a play (don't recall the other team) where Eli was down on the ground and the play was pretty much over, but they seemed to be pushing and shoving around him and the line seemed to see that and protect him. I didn't see that I years past.
I love this kid......
Simms11 : 11/17/2015 3:29 pm : link
he's got the right temperment for the job of LT and the left side has become a formidible group as a result. He'll get better and has shown glimpses of being just that. He wants to get better, he wants to win badly and he has all the tools. If he can get his technique to improve and get better against speed-rushers the sky is limit for him; a potential Pro-Bowler IMHO.
my eye test is seeing Eli getting 3 seconds to get a pass off
Dinger : 11/17/2015 3:31 pm : link
and not winding up on his back every play. Hes part of an increasingly improving line and I don't question the pick. I just hope his grumpiness doesn't translate into bad attitude down the road.
He's going to be fine
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/17/2015 3:35 pm : link
But people were getting carried away and embellishing how good he's been.

He's been better than most rookies that get thrown into the fire at that position, and that's really encouraging, because that standard is fairly low. He's been part of the solution, not a problem. He has not been great. That doesn't mean they're not thrilled in the front office. They should be.
Nothing like BBI pointing out a rookie LT is having some issues

From what I have seen
TMS : 11/17/2015 3:57 pm : link
he has awesome potential. Size, speed, power and attitude that could produce an ALL PRO, when he learns technique. Admit I wanted Shelton at the time. but he looks like a beast to me down the line.

our left side is going to convert 3-1's and punch it in on the goal line

Hmmmm. Comparing a rookie in his 10th game to a 7 year vet? Don't know about that one.

Good nucleus. Flowers has alot of upside.

establishing position and all the technical stuff evaluating lineman. Out of 50 plus plays you see a guy going wide around Flowers once a game or he grabs a face mask inadvertently or hands to the face and you harp on that. I say big deal, if the eye test means anything that 47 out of 50 snaps he is pretty fucking good

well said. I see the same thing
People see the bad plays
BigBlueShock : 11/17/2015 6:17 pm : link
Flowers is a rookie. He gets beat a couple of times a game and that's the only thing people see, and they say "he's struggling mightily!".

No, he's not. Try watching the game in its entirety. He is much more good than bad. The plays he gets beat on are the ones the average fan notices him, so they think he's struggling more than he actually is. Has he been great? Nope. But he hasn't had half the problems many on BBI like to believe.

My reference was to more beatty than flowrrs. I think he will be just fine and will get better. but a lot of people butcher about beattys performance some years, but performance wise beatty has had better seasons. but flowers, if he continues to learn and improve, will be a monster.

I agree 100% on Beatty. Giants fans just never embraced him. He was much better than his reputation. I could never figure it out. Is it because he's quiet? Not a "mauler" that people love? I don't know, but Beatty was pretty damn good for this team. I also think part of it was the contract he signed. Fans expect sometimes unreasonable results based on contracts. Particularly the fans that hated the contract from the time it was signed. They likely will never give the player the benefit of doubt
I love the kid

Tough position to play as a rookie. I also think he is definitely is ready for this bye as is most rookies at this point. Yes he has room for improvement but I love what I see.

He compared a seasoned vet's performance the last 4 years of their career to a rookie at the same position. What is there to agree with but shake your head at the premise. Flowers was drafted to play RT this season while learning LT at the pro level. He was thrown right into the mix with Beatty's injury.
Excellent player

for us at a position of need. Could you imagine what our line would be without him?

BBI critics here are harsh. Kid is in his rookie season. Many years ago a rookie wouldn't even see the field. Plus he is probably playing on a bum ankle.

Well if you bothered to read my entire post, it would be obvious that the part I was agreeing with was when he said that people loved to butcher Beatty. Beatty was a whipping boy on BBI and Giants fans in general. deep is right about saying that. It had nothing to do with Flowers. I already voiced my opinions about Flowers a on this thread.
He has his bumps
Joey in VA : 11/18/2015 6:19 pm : link
But overall he's done damn well this year. He almost never makes the same mistake twice in a game, and trust me I'm looking. He's going to be a Pro Bowl LT after next season
Beatty became a whipping boy
LauderdaleMatty : 11/18/2015 8:14 pm : link
Because the first year after getting an 18 million dollar cash bonus he sucked. He was MUCH worse than Flowers has been this year.

He has always been below average as a run blocker. Also there's a huge difference between a rookie being thrown in at LT and a guy who was given that big of a bonus. Making him uncuttable for at least 3 years. One where he was a bottom tier guy. One where he was average at best(last year) and this year where he never shed a snap. He was given a top tier signing bonus even though he was a JAG type. So instead of being an anchor to their he was a guy who needed help as much as any just guy on then to do his job.

That he was maybe the best guy on the OL last year is meaningless as the OL was atrocious last year. He will be gone next year most likely. We can move on w a kid who is tough as nails and will only get better
