Is there anyway for this team to clinch in week 16?

mirwin : 11/17/2015 5:54 pm
I'm just wondering as I would love for week 17 vs philly to not matter, would be good to be able to rest our starters not risk losing them for possible playoffs if philly just gonna be dirty again.

I'm assuming it is possible but we will fuck up at least 1 game just enough that we have to beat philly and I honestly just don't think we match up well enough to beat them, our line just can't handle them while other teams seem to do it pretty well, even after our line does well vs buffalo, for the most part New England and others just don't under stand what it is vs Connor barwin and fletcher cox?
Doesn't matter.

TC will NOT rest his starters
Of course there is

win the rest of our games and redskins and eagles each lose 2
Remember: 11-5 still mathematically possible.

So, sure.
It's time for Tom Coughlin

To push all his chips to the middle of the table. Win out!

its not the same team, but going into Week 14 in the 2011 season your New York Giants were sitting at .500 (6-6). They would close out the season with two victories in the division and a win against the Jets finishing 3-1 over that stretch.

Today heading into Week 12 the Giants sit at .500 again (5-5), can they go 5-1 or 4-2 down the stretch? Coughlin, Eli, JPP, and Nicks have been here before. Time to rally the troops over the bye and get that first big win which all but closes the door on Washington as they would be 3 games behind us with 3 to go (assuming a loss @Carolina).
If the Giants go into the final weekend 9-6...

...chances are they will have already clinched, because I doubt the Eagles will make it to 8-7.

another possibility

NYG tied with PHI after week 15.
DAL and WAS out of division race.
NYG have beaten WAS or has CO tiebreak in hand.
No wildcard possibility.
NFC east team has worst record of division leaders (this looks certain).

Then the Vikings game would have no playoff or seeding implications.

not understanding? How would week 17 not matter between Philly/Giants if they are tied..let alone week 16 game vs Vikes. The philly Giants game would matter for div. title then
because if giants win the tiebreak by beating PHI
ray in arlington : 11/18/2015 8:14 am : link
it doesn't matter whether they are tied with them going into week 17 or a game behind. In either case the giants win the division if they beat philly and they don't win the division if they lose or tie.

Dallas had this situation in 2011. They played Stephen McGee in week 16 because they had to beat the Giants in week 17 regardless of their week 16 result.

oh I think I know what you mean now. I'm not talking about another possibility for the thread title. I'm talking about a different scenario where the week 16 game doesn't matter but the week 17 game does.

1 way: win 5 straight. And mirwin, have you forgotten the lesson of

2007? PLAY TO WIN. EVERY DAY.Teams that "rest starters"lose. Ask the Peytom Manning Colts teams how well that theory worked

TC will rest his starters if he feels it's appropriate. This is something I love about his coaching. He plays to the situation and doesn't react to the media or fans telling him what he should or shouldn't do.

In 2007 he coached week 17 like the playoffs depended on it.
In 2008, in Minnesota, Eli was done after the 1st half

So let's not pretend he's married to either philosophy.
I'm gonna double post to really emphasize this point
Mike in Long Beach : 11/18/2015 10:17 am : link
The 2007 game gets all the publicity, as it should... but somehow fans have translated that to "Tom Coughlin never rests his starters."

From the recap of the box score posted below.

Quote:
Really, it was the Giants who gave the Vikings all they could handle despite a bunch of backups on the field and a clearly conservative offensive strategy in the second half.

"We always talk about improvement and how important improvement is. That's the way to improve right there, under game conditions," coach Tom Coughlin said.
