What's the Problem With Orleans Darkwa?

TC : 11/18/2015 11:32 pm
Just checked his stats to confirm what my eyes told me; he's got the best rushing average of all four RB's. What can't he do that is limiting his touches and getting Jennings and Williams more? Vereen I can understand, to a degree, because of his flexibility as a receiver. Williams I don't get at all. And while Jennings is a solid journeyman back, he's lost most of whatever burst he may have had. Darkwa is very quick to the P.O.A. and runs with great power for his size. Does he have a problem knowing his blocking assignments? Can't handle a blitzing LB? Can't remember plays? Runs the wrong way? I'm legitimately flummoxed!
Well for one thing (or two), his average yardage has dropped each week

Also, has he caught a pass yet?
He is buried on the depth chart.

Plain and simple.

I said it weeks ago. When you have four rb's you have zero rb's. I wish the Giants would get a back into a rhythm and flow of the game instead of wheeling through four guys. I believe it is holding them back.
He certainly is their hardest runner

But I do recall one play in the fourth quarter where I was watching and said to myself that 26 made a bad choice on blitz pickup. That might be the issue. Because I have certainly wanted to see him carrying the ball more
No one hits the hole

faster than Darkwa, which is something the Giants have been missing for a very long time. I would have him out there every time over Williams.

Agree, think it's a key factor in the inability of any of the backs, the entire run game, to establish a rhythm. Pick a top guy to take the bulk of the carries, at least 18-20 a game, and keep Vereen in rotation depending on formation, down and distance, etc. Definitely feels like it's holding them back.
With only 23 running plays

against NE, there weren't many opportunities for 4 running backs. I am sure the Giant’s coaches are pleased with his play. I’d like to see him get more opportunities.
Nothing wrong with him, the Giants

Just refuse to take "1 yard Andre" out of the rotation.

Too many RB 's getting carried IMO, they don't allow them to get any momentum going.

Instead of Thunder and Lightning

The forecast for this backfield is Partly Cloudy with Drizzle turning Colder expecting Flurries.

I'd have no problem using Vereen as the feature back and Jennings as the backup. I'm not a big Darkwa fan but not opposed to Orleans getting goal line carries. Williams just simply needs to be taken out of the rotation.

I think Vereen is the perfect fit for this offense with his speed and pass catching skills and needs to be used the majority of the game. It seems like the Jints are trying to keep all 4 backs fresh for the whole game but it's not producing.

Vereen is too small to be the featured back. Well not just too small, but not tough enough, he's not a pile pusher or physical runner at all he's just fine where he is. You should be a Darkwa fan, he's the best pure runner on this team.
I don't think Vereen is too small
Cruzin : 11/19/2015 8:58 am : link

That's why I said he should be the feature back. Not impressed with Darkwa at all, I think he's 3rd on this team behind Vereen and Jennings. I would like to be impressed by Darkwa, I'm open minded but as of right now no one is producing and Vereen is under used.
I'd have pared down the rotation by now
Torrag : 11/19/2015 9:14 am : link
Darkwa would be my main guy carrying the rock with Vereen the change of pace/3rd down guy. Leftover carries when Darkwa needs a blow would be Williams. I'd be phasing out Jennings.
I personally want Darkwa to start
NYG4246 : 11/19/2015 9:37 am : link
Give him 15 carries and see how it handles it. He runs hard, never stops his legs, and moves up field. I like Jennings but he dances to much and doesnt cut it up field fast enough. I loved the Willians pick last year but he is a guy who needs a bunch of carries to get going and I like what he brings to the table but withouth the workload he isnt very effective.

I love Vereen as the shotgun/3rd down back he hasnt showed to much running the ball between the tackles but I like him.

Darkwa has also made several good blocks in pass protection, they all seem to block well for the most part.
I like Darkwa,
Simms11 : 11/19/2015 9:39 am : link
but is he the answer at RB? I know we use a committee approach, however, I'm no a fan of that because I think the RB has to get into a rhythm, the flow of the blocking and the game in order to be effective. I think our running game is effective enough to help our passing game out with play action, etc, but I think we need that Bell-Cow RB. Is Darkwa that guy? I don't know, but I think the Giants will be in the market for that type of RB next off-season. Is it a priority? probably not, but I think it will be one of the positions they look at very closely.

Agreed!

It is because he cannot block or struggles with Blitz pick up which you identify in practice and thus not play him in a game where it can kill your $20 Million QB
I believe the Giants are playing the RBs exactly how they can/should
USAF NYG Fan : 11/19/2015 10:56 am : link
It's a RB by committee and each one brings something different to the table. I think this is what many teams in the league have switched to. RB are not as valued as they once were so a feature/ever down back seems harder to find.

IMHO it should be Jennings as the lead back with Darkwa spelling him first. This should give Darkwa the opportunity to supplant Jennings if capable. Williams should be a backup at this point. I use to believe he is our best short yardage RB but lately I'm not so sure. Vereen is an excellent 3rd down back and I wouldn't mind seeing him split out in the slot from time to time. He should continue that role.

Here's how I see each back:

Jennings is a jack of all trades, master of none. When Jennings is in, the defense has to account for the run, pass protection, or a receiving threat out of the backfield. I believe he's probably the 2nd best on the team at everything in a RB skillset. He is an all purpose back but cannot be an every down back because his body can't handle all the reps.

Vereen is a great 3rd down back. I don't see anything special from him when taking the handoff. He excels at pass protection and even better as a receiving threat. He is a prototypical 3rd down back and a dominant one at that.

Williams is single cut and run type back. He runs with power and usually falls forward. He can pass protect. However, he's not a receiving threat. When Williams is in, a defense expects the run.

Darkwa is a runner and best taking the handoff. He hasn't been much of a receiving threat and only ok in pass protection. He does seem to slip through holes in the line better than any of the other RBs. He also finds and hits the hole fast. He still seems raw and in need of work but isn't ready to take the primary role. Like Williams, I think a defense sees him and thinks run. However, I like Darkwa over Williams and Darkwa should be getting carries over Williams.
He needs to storm into Coughlin's office
spike : 11/19/2015 12:26 pm : link
and demand more carries.

He's our dark horse.
I'm not sure weather or not that would work
Cruzin : 11/19/2015 12:54 pm : link

Flooding the HC with personal demands would be like pissing into the wind.
I have been calling for him to get more touches
Matt M. : 11/19/2015 12:55 pm : link
at the expense of Williams. At the end of last year, I thought Williams looked like he was improving in terms of vision, patience, and instincts. This year, he has absolutely zero value to this team.

Regardless of whether Darkwa gets more carries or not, I do not like the way they are rotating the backs. I like Vereen cemented at the 3rd down back and the back in 2 minute drills, plus some more. I think Jennings has been looking better the last few weeks. Other than a carry here or there and a short yardage situation, why should Darkwa or Williams get a carry, let alone a whole drive dedicated to them?

We won't know until we leave him the fk in there. I don't get TC's obsession with rotation. Wtf doesn't he lv the hot hand alone?

he'll tell you himself he's too small to be a feature back, that's why he's never been one.

Darkwa is buried down the depth chart for now, if he continues to perform well (and practice well) then perhaps he'll overtake others. He seems to have gotten more reps than #44 lately.
