Your most overrated player in the NFL...

OBJ_AllDay : 11/19/2015 10:42 pm
Mine would probably be Calvin Johnson: This guy has lost more than just a step. Maybe its the big frame leaving him open to injuries, some of it is the qb play and dysfunction of the team BUT i'm sorry a top 5 wideout does not perform like this guy week in and week out. I would give just about anything to have Tate on the other side of OBJ.

Now Dez Bryant is overrated too, from a Giants fan? How many times has he punched our garbage defense in the mouth? What could we do about it? nothing ...
Romo...thats a VERY good one
RForlan789 : 11/20/2015 8:12 am : link
If I didn't have to hear a Giant fan rave about how great Romo was, it wouldn't be too ...soon. Ah, work time for the 39-J.
Kaepernick
Giants2012 : 11/20/2015 8:17 am : link
The guy couldn't read a defense and praised as Revolutionary.
Pretty sure Adrian Peterson and Tom

Brady were jokes.

If not, the only thing dumber than saying Peterson, is saying Brady.
Tom Brady
joeinpa : 11/20/2015 8:19 am : link
No one has ever been as good as we make him. He might be greatest of all time, a sentiment I do not share, but really they often make him sound inhuman.

Never happened...

Witten has eaten the Giants lunch and stolen their lunch money. Bryant has crapped-out...
I guess my definition of over-rated is different than most
USAF NYG Fan : 11/20/2015 8:40 am : link
Cutler for example is not highly rated because he shouldn't be. Megatron is on the downside of his career and I think "experts" would rate him accordingly. Kaepernick just got benched so how can he be called "over" rated.

I like Ryan and Wilson so far for QBs. I might include Andrew Luck myself but not sure that's fair. I think Suh is an excellent choice as well outside of QB. I also agree with the Dallas O-Line. They are good but often talked about like they are all time and they are not even close to that.
Romo is an interesting one
UberAlias : 11/20/2015 8:42 am : link
Some people overrate him, some people underrate him.

I anticipate he will get more credit than he will deserve if they turn things after his return. The team's losing streak has been about a lot more than just the QB play, but they probably rally around his return and I expect other areas to pick up.

If they lose a game or two after his return though, things could also implode.
Wilson
UConn4523 : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
is further proving this year how awful the decision to not go to Lynch was in the SB. With a hobbled Lynch that team as average at best with an offense that doesn't do a single thing well. Now that they can't pound the ball, Wilson is on track for his most attempts and turnovers of his career. He's only thrown 10 TD's in 9 games (0 rushing TD's too), that is HORRENDOUS.
RG3
pjcas18 : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
owned this title for a couple years.

I don't think Russell Wilson is overrated, he's not considered an elite QB, is he? he's kind of a Joe Flacco who can run. or maybe I'm just out of touch with the nationally accepted ratings.
Megatron and Antonio Gates are the same category...
BamaBlue : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
once dominant players that are clearly past their prime. I don't know if overrated is the right term. They still can make a play now and then, but are nowhere near their stature as 'great' players.
I'll throw Revis out there, not because....
Crispino : 11/20/2015 8:55 am : link
he's not a fine player, but because of the fact that he gets away with more pass interference than any cornerback in the game. Half of the plays he makes draw a flag when other players make them. His reputation seems to have made him immune from getting called for interference.
JJ Watt and it's not even close.
NYGmen58 : 11/20/2015 9:29 am : link
He's a great player but the way the NFL/media polishes his knob every day is ridiculous.

Russel Wilson also in a close second. Again, a very good player/athlete, but definitely not in the top 1/3 of qbs.
Watt
UConn4523 : 11/20/2015 9:36 am : link
happens to play a position that, with proper gameplanning, can be neutralized for long stretches. He will always get his but I don't see JJ Watt or any DT changing the face of a franchise.

Even in our SB runs, Strahan, Tuck, Osi, JPP all had moments and it took the sum of the parts for them to hit home on Brady. Watt needs Clowney to be Clemson Clowney otherwise he's going to be held in check a lot on game day. I don't think it has anything to do with Watt not being a great player, he is.
Russell Wilson easily
jimfinn81 : 11/20/2015 9:37 am : link
He's the second highest paid qb in the league and is easily the worst player near the top of the salaries list.

the guy is one hell of an athlete but his numbers arent really good..everyone hoots and hollers about him like hes the best in the league....and mvp talk? give me a fucking break

he is 21st in the NFL with 2037 passing yards, names like Cousins, Alex Smith (whos a good qb but barely throws the ball more then 6 yards) and rookie winston in front of him

he is 12th in the nfl with 15 Td passes to go along with 9 picks

he has completed only 56% of his passes

he has 11 turnovers this season - 11 int and 2 fumbles

I think he is top 5, not 2nd though. I think Palmer should get the nod for that one.

Carolina is going to start losing some games soon. They have some tough ones coming up.
Overrated by who? The media?
Cruzin : 11/20/2015 10:48 am : link

Anyone who said Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Adrian Peterson needs to just leave the football site and go find a knitting board to post on.

If this weren't a Giants board, you know the answer would be Eli.

I'd say Tony Romo but certainly agree with Matt Ryan.
Some weird names on this thread.
Curtis in VA : 11/20/2015 10:56 am : link
How can you call a future Hall of Famer and perennial Pro Bowler overrated?

When I think of the term overrated, I think if the players career to this point...not how they are currently playing.

Aaron Rodgers?

Calvin Johnson?

Adrian Peterson?

JJ Watt?

Dez Bryant?

How is Tony Romo overrated? He's a great QB who has multiple comeback wins on his resume.

Is today opposite day or something?
Russel Wilson was very good those first few years
djm : 11/20/2015 11:08 am : link
but he along with the team have slowed down this season. HE was anything but overrated--production is production anyway you slice it and WIlson produced. But he isn't producing this season. Maybe it's a little bit of the OL or Lynch or Wilson regressing or a combo of all three but Wilson's not making the plays he made from 12-14.

I would use the word contributed. Lynch and the defense produced. Wilson was given a first class ticket to ride along.

I kind of have to agree with this. This QB, sans Peyton manning, has probably had more offensive weapons than anyone in the last 10-12 years. It doesnt mean he is a bad QB whatsoever, but for all the love and fame he gets - he doesnt have enough on his resume.

How many QB's would you take ahead of him?
Drew Brees
Chris684 : 11/20/2015 11:25 am : link
aka St. Drew.

He has made a living surrounded by major talent in that dome where every game turns into a track meet.

Ask him to win a big game on the road and it gets alittle hairy.

He's also had some high interception totals but in those seasons the narrative is that "he's pressing" trying to do too much.

Stop it. You're killing me. Drew Brees won a Super Bowl. He's been a top QB throughout his career.
What Cam Newton
KWALL2 : 11/20/2015 11:28 am : link
Is doing this year is proving he's been underrated.

He's one guy who certainly has a much bigger impact then what you see on the box score. His running skills forces defenses to change gameplans. Because of it he's able to produce points (3rd in NFL) with the worst set of skill position players in the league.

After the GB game the packers said they changed what the plan was to eliminate Olson after Newton had a few big runs early.

What he does in the Red Zone is special too. Nobody else can do what he does here. It makes the team much better that he's able to produce such a high red zone TD % even without even avg talent at WR.

Cam Newton is one of the most valuable players in the NFL right now.

Curtis, Where would I rank Romo ?
Cruzin : 11/20/2015 11:31 am : link
We'll give him normal production for games missed this year. In no particular order:
Brady
Rodgers
Palmer
Big Ben
Rivers
Carr
Cam
Brees
Eli

Romo's a good QB, I'm a Dallas hater but I'm being objective here, when I say Romo is the overrated I'm saying for his godlike status from the media he should be a perennial playoff participant (say that three times fast).

Thats a fair list for the most part, but I would definitely take him over Carr and absolutely over Rivers, and maybe even Cam Newton.

Its not like anyone is calling him the best QB in the league. No one with any sense would say that he's better than Brady or Rodgers but you could make a case for him being top 5 and I think the attention he receives is appropriate. Maybe we hate it more than we normally would because he plays for the Cowboys and we hate the Cowboys.

I can't believe I'm defending Tony Romo. I feel dirty.

seems like you're making a different argument.

To be overrated doesnt mean you are not GOOD. It simply means that you are given more credit than others for a similar body of work or held on some type of pedestal by the national media.

My only issue with Watt is his manufactured personality. He's the best DE in the league, but man, does he come off like he's NFL's John Cena.
For me, Russell Wilson is the most overrated
David in LA : 11/20/2015 2:13 pm : link

Russell Wilson by far
Wellington : 11/20/2015 3:08 pm : link
Glad someone said it.

So you have the best OL in the game, a top 5 RB, and the best defense in the game... my grandmother would look great throwing play action passes behind all of that - and she's a cadaver 6 ft underground.

Give the guy an OL as bad as the Giants were last year, or the Steelers a few years back or the Pats now! Forget it. Andrew Luck put up monster numbers last year getting killed by defenders and handing off to Trent Richardson and the ghost of Ahmad Bradshaw. Cmon.
It's easy with Watt
Mason : 11/20/2015 3:47 pm : link
He is praised for the same thing that other DEs get destroyed for putting up big stats against weak opponents but not doing it against quality opponents. It's just that simple. No one has to debate the issue, it is not an opinion. It is based on fact. His stats are mostly against AFC south teams, Jaguars, Colts and Titans. When he plays teams outside of his division his production... wait for it... is average.

For example JPP put up big numbers against the AFC south last season and was criticize for it because they were seen as weak. Hell even fans of those teams have pointed this out and the fact that Watt gets to play them twice a year.
Richard Sherman
trueblueinpw : 11/20/2015 6:44 pm : link
He has so much talent around him - its hard for me to see how he's an elite player. He's good - but is he really the difference with that Seahawks defense? I don't think so.

most underrated QB in the NFL right now (Flacco #3, Palmer #1).

Romo is overhyped, but not overrated.
81_Great_Dane : 11/21/2015 11:49 am : link
Joe Buck likes to talk about "THE LEGEND OF TONY ROMO" and crap like that, but nobody suggests Romo is at the level of Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning (before this season).

I think Romo is really good, a tough guy on the field, and a big difference maker. Look at how Dallas has struggled without him -- much more than New England struggled the year Brady was out.

I find Romo annoying, and I get bored hearing TV people blather about him, since his team really hasn't accomplished much -- but that's their blathering, not his. I have huge respect for him as a player.
