Your most overrated player in the NFL...

OBJ_AllDay : 11/19/2015 10:42 pm
Mine would probably be Calvin Johnson: This guy has lost more than just a step. Maybe its the big frame leaving him open to injuries, some of it is the qb play and dysfunction of the team BUT i'm sorry a top 5 wideout does not perform like this guy week in and week out. I would give just about anything to have Tate on the other side of OBJ.

Tough room re: Calvin Johnson. He's banged up, and just past 30, but there is no doubt that he deserved the recognition he got most of the last decade.

moreso than Sherman? Im convinced Sherman would get shreded without the same help he has over the top as he does now. He's struggled this year badly and lacks top end speed. Peterson has speed in spades.

of course he was great at a time but the last 2 years he doesn't look like the same guy.
Yes
theking : 11/19/2015 10:48 pm : link
I've seen Peterson constantly get picked on.. He makes a big play or has a return TD every now and then but his cover skills aren't great.
Calvin?
UConn4523 : 11/19/2015 10:48 pm : link
he hasn't been a top WR in a couple of years and everyone knows it.

Matt Ryan is mine. Never seen a guy come up so small so often who still gets the praise he does.
I agree
Rob in CT/NYC : 11/19/2015 10:49 pm : link
but it seems like a reasonable career arc, so while I agree that he doesn't looklike Megatron, but we may just disagree on the word overrated - I wouldn't use it for an aging great, but no big deal.
Cam Newton?
pjcas18 : 11/19/2015 10:51 pm : link
just kidding..

Matt Ryan is a good choice.

Ryan is a good choice.
Devon : 11/19/2015 10:54 pm : link
He's a very good QB, but he catches little to no blame for anything that's gone wrong in Atlanta and for his teams consistently failing in win or else games.

It's weird because he's not even some force of personality nor does he have any jaw dropping specific skill to draw people in and get himself the pass pretty much no other QB in shoes would get.

I agree w Ryan but I think Russel Wilson is right behind him. Damn close
QBs are pretty easy for this
UConn4523 : 11/19/2015 10:59 pm : link
and I agree on Wilson to an extent. A few injuries to their offense and his game has gone to shit.
Calvin aint overrated

JJ Watt
Mason : 11/19/2015 11:32 pm : link
he gets praise for the same thing that others at his position get criticize for to be honest. The guy racks up those sacks against stinky OLs and is quiet against quality opponents. But when his stats last year was broken down against his opponents above .500 vs under it was just confirmed for me.

An important distinction. He was a generational talent. He got old.
Russell Wilson
madgiantscow009 : 11/19/2015 11:58 pm : link
It was RG3, Kap, Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, the next running quarterback.
Calvin ain't the problem in Detroit, he can still produce

stafford and the OL have been horrible.

My vote goes to Matt Ryan with Andy Dalton not very far behind
Matt Ryan
JOrthman : 11/20/2015 12:11 am : link
The guy has been blessed with HOF talent at times in his career, studs at all skill positions and he consistantly comes up short. I have yet to hear any negative press on him. Like someone said, he doesn't even have a strong personality that draws people in to be hyped from that perspective.
The
Semipro Lineman : 11/20/2015 12:39 am : link
Dallas Cowboys offensive line. Their leading rusher averages 3.8 yards per carry and the entire team only has 6 rushing touchdowns. In addition, the Cowboy QB's have been sacked 20 times opposed to Eli being sacked 15. For the best unit in the league, you would think that they would do a better job of carrying the team through tough times
Dallas offensive line??
grizz299 : 11/20/2015 2:50 am : link
My gosh, no QB and no running back what do you expect?
Now they add Collins. Wow .

Big Ben circa 2004-2008ish
SHO'NUFF : 11/20/2015 4:08 am : link
Russell Wilson circa his entire career
Tom Brady to a certain in extent
After last week's Giants' game
BlueLou : 11/20/2015 4:17 am : link
I'd nominate Brady and OBJ.
are you sure
PaulBlakeTSU : 11/20/2015 4:39 am : link
Calvin is so washed up and overrated? I think it's more due to the dysfunction in Detroit.

Look at Larry Fitzgerald's stats from 2012-2014.

Has to be accounted for but you expect a lot more than he gives. 1 or 2 plays a game isn't worth his salary cap hit
I have a hard time calling a CB overrated,
ballanda : 11/20/2015 6:57 am : link
since legally they're barely even allowed to play football.
Adrien Peterson
Milton : 11/20/2015 7:09 am : link
But it's close.
I agree about JJ Watt
jjgmrg901 : 11/20/2015 7:25 am : link
Love the back story about being a walk on and everything but now they speak of him in same breath as LT and he is nowhere close to taking over games like that.

On a different plane I would nominate Sheldon Day from Notre Dame. Everyone raves about how he is a force and can't be blocked but the few games I have watched he almost always blocked and pushed out of the way
Watt and Wilson are good picks
Go Terps : 11/20/2015 7:36 am : link
I'd also mention Aaron Rodgers. He's very good, but the people already talking about him as an all time player go overboard.
Marshawn Lynch

+1, although I think Flacco is pretty overrated but it won't win an argument because he has that SB.

I don't agree. He plays the game with heart. Say what you will about his off the field behavior (it was horrid) I love how he plays on the field. Tom Brady is in a great situation...but he works hard to make himself successful much like the Mannings.
I think QB's are generally overrated
AnnapolisMike : 11/20/2015 8:06 am : link
but they affect the outcome of the game more than any other player.
Dez Bryant...
BamaBlue : 11/20/2015 8:06 am : link
Not just because he's a whiney, weak sister. Bryant has always come-up small in big spots. Dropping passes, failing to stay in-bounds, not fighting for passes. Yet, he is referred to as one of the top wide receivers in the league. Yeah... Dez Bryant for MOP (Most Overrated Player).
Calvin Johnson? Adrien Peterson?
RForlan789 : 11/20/2015 8:09 am : link
Are overrated? I've never seen such grand stupidity ooze out in one place ever. Adrien Peterson? thats literally the stupidest thing that I've ever read.

As for Russell Wilson, oh I overrated, I just gave THE definition of overrated, which is RUSSELL wilson. Friday Morning groups before work, the big Sand Castle.

#1 Russell Wilson
#2 Cam Newton

...basically any player that has ever been in a play in the NFL and did something good is going to be casted as overrated, especially Adrien Peterson lol fucking stupidity has no bounds
Romo and Cutler
Mike fr Warwick : 11/20/2015 8:10 am : link
Imo enough talent to trick you into thinking you could rely on them to win
LOL
RForlan789 : 11/20/2015 8:11 am : link
Now Dez Bryant is overrated too, from a Giants fan? How many times has he punched our garbage defense in the mouth? What could we do about it? nothing ...
Romo...thats a VERY good one
RForlan789 : 11/20/2015 8:12 am : link
If I didn't have to hear a Giant fan rave about how great Romo was, it wouldn't be too ...soon. Ah, work time for the 39-J.
Kaepernick
Giants2012 : 11/20/2015 8:17 am : link
The guy couldn't read a defense and praised as Revolutionary.
Pretty sure Adrian Peterson and Tom
pjcas18 : 11/20/2015 8:18 am : link
Brady were jokes.

If not, the only thing dumber than saying Peterson, is saying Brady.
Tom Brady
joeinpa : 11/20/2015 8:19 am : link
No one has ever been as good as we make him. He might be greatest of all time, a sentiment I do not share, but really they often make him sound inhuman.

Never happened...

Witten has eaten the Giants lunch and stolen their lunch money. Bryant has crapped-out...
I guess my definition of over-rated is different than most
USAF NYG Fan : 11/20/2015 8:40 am : link
Cutler for example is not highly rated because he shouldn't be. Megatron is on the downside of his career and I think "experts" would rate him accordingly. Kaepernick just got benched so how can he be called "over" rated.

I like Ryan and Wilson so far for QBs. I might include Andrew Luck myself but not sure that's fair. I think Suh is an excellent choice as well outside of QB. I also agree with the Dallas O-Line. They are good but often talked about like they are all time and they are not even close to that.
Romo is an interesting one
UberAlias : 11/20/2015 8:42 am : link
Some people overrate him, some people underrate him.

I anticipate he will get more credit than he will deserve if they turn things after his return. The team's losing streak has been about a lot more than just the QB play, but they probably rally around his return and I expect other areas to pick up.

If they lose a game or two after his return though, things could also implode.
Wilson
UConn4523 : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
is further proving this year how awful the decision to not go to Lynch was in the SB. With a hobbled Lynch that team as average at best with an offense that doesn't do a single thing well. Now that they can't pound the ball, Wilson is on track for his most attempts and turnovers of his career. He's only thrown 10 TD's in 9 games (0 rushing TD's too), that is HORRENDOUS.
RG3
pjcas18 : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
owned this title for a couple years.

I don't think Russell Wilson is overrated, he's not considered an elite QB, is he? he's kind of a Joe Flacco who can run. or maybe I'm just out of touch with the nationally accepted ratings.
Megatron and Antonio Gates are the same category...
BamaBlue : 11/20/2015 8:44 am : link
once dominant players that are clearly past their prime. I don't know if overrated is the right term. They still can make a play now and then, but are nowhere near their stature as 'great' players.
