Glauber: Decisions on Curz, JPP, Amukamara, and Beason

Victor Cruz faces an uncertain future with the Giants after being placed on injured reserve with a calf injury that required surgery this week. But he's not the only Giants player whose status for 2016 is in doubt.

The Giants have big decisions to make not only on Cruz, but also on three other players whose futures are complicated by injury issues: defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, cornerback Prince Amukamara and linebacker Jon Beason.

Tough roster decisions ahead for Giants with Cruz, JPP, Amukamara and Beason - ( New Window )

I think our best bet with Prince
Big Blue '56 : 11/20/2015 3:35 pm : link
would be the Transition tag which allows us the option to match any offers, if we cannot come to agreeable terms
I think there's a strong chance Cruz
USAF NYG Fan : 11/20/2015 3:42 pm : link
takes a cut to stay in NY. I'm not sure he gets as many endorsements elsewhere.
Beason is gone
BillT : 11/20/2015 3:45 pm : link
I've think he'll retire. He knows he can't continue and who would pay him even vet min given his injury history.
This really is not rocket science
Funkhouser : 11/20/2015 3:49 pm : link
Beason is gone.

Cruz is gone if he doesn't accept a major cut, not restructure, a pay cut.

Prince can't play ten games a year. Offer a reasonable increase, nothing too substantial.

JPP should again be offered a reasonable contract that won't break the bank. A lot still depends how he performs over the next 6 games.
Very sloppy reporting on Amukmara.
Big Blue Blogger : 11/20/2015 3:50 pm : link

He's in the final year of his $8.18 million rookie contract, of which $7.5 million was guaranteed.
Strictly speaking, that's accurate - sort of. Amukamara was paid $8.18MM for his first four seasons. The Giants exercised his fifth-year option at $6.9MM. So he will have earned over $15MM by the time his initial commitment to the Giants lapses.
Would prefer to retain all but Beason
JonC : 11/20/2015 3:51 pm : link
and perhaps the injury histories for the big three will be enough to temper their expectations, and offers from other teams, while hammering out compromises with each.

Still need to draft each of those positions to keep the pipeline flowing and hedge injuries.
Beason will most likely be gone.
Randy in CT : 11/20/2015 3:54 pm : link
Prince back though for less of a contract than I think he's hoping--he's very good but not always on the field and that costs money and roster spot for an additional player.

JPP at a fair price? YES.

Cruz? Depends on his condition.
I'm not even sure why he mentions Beason.....
BillKo : 11/20/2015 3:55 pm : link
pretty much a no-brainer.

The man is older, and is injury prone.

Cruz - either a substantial pay cut with incentives, or he needs to be released.

I think the Giants will work hard on JPP and Prince to take reasonable, fair contracts.
I'd only bring back JPP and Prince
David in LA : 11/20/2015 4:00 pm : link
.
I think you let Cruz try to go on an incentive laden deal
jcn56 : 11/20/2015 4:03 pm : link
If he's not willing, or he can't make the roster at that point, then it's time to bid him farewell.
I think just about everybody
Gman11 : 11/20/2015 4:04 pm : link
here would agree that Beason is a goner.

Prince? I'd keep him even at his current pay.

Cruz? If he doesn't take a pay cut then adios and thanks for the memories.

JPP? He isn't worth $10 million. No way in hell. He's better than what they had before he came back, but that's not saying much. I really would not break the bank for him.
There is no decision on Beason,
Mr. Bungle : 11/20/2015 4:08 pm : link
outside of "bench player making the vet minimum." He absolutely, positively cannot be treated like he has any potential as a starter whatsoever.
I'm not so sure they don't franchise JPP again
Milton : 11/20/2015 4:09 pm : link
If he proves in the final six games that he is still a feared pass-rusher, it makes just a much sense as it did last year.

Hopefully they will be able to work out deals with Cruz and Prince that are incentive-based.
I think JPP and Prince are what keeps them up at night
Ben in Tampa : 11/20/2015 4:12 pm : link
Cruz and Beason are more cut and dry, and perhaps inevitable
The trouble with Prince is
BillT : 11/20/2015 4:14 pm : link
If you don't resign him you have to sign a starting FA CB. That's big money and one might not be available. JPP is like Prince. Sign him or replace him. Same problems again. With Cruz under contract I'm sure they will work out something that makes sense.
Beason's gone
old man : 11/20/2015 4:14 pm : link
Cruz needs to be restructured or gone; either of Prince/JPP need a contract, team friendly, the other gets a tag.
You guys are probably correct re Beason,
Big Blue '56 : 11/20/2015 4:20 pm : link
But I think what many of us have learned by now, is that nothing is a "no-brainer" with this regime
As i understand it
Matt M. : 11/20/2015 4:21 pm : link
Cruz is not that easy to do what is being suggested. They would have to cut him, leaving him open to the FA market, in order to give him a significant pay cut and/or incentive laden deal. Otherwise, it is a re-structuring of his current deal which I don't think can actually reduce the total value by more than a certain percentage. Salary can be reduced, but converted to a bonus, which would be amortized, likely over a longer period.
Beason has to be be almost certain to be cut.
Matt M. : 11/20/2015 4:23 pm : link
Cruz, as I mentioned above, can be tricky. JPP is essentially playing now to see what value he has to them, if any. He might actually be the easiest of the 4 to bring back at this point. Prince is likely the best or second best player of the 4, but has yet to play a full season. They may be just as inclined to let him walk. I do like the idea of a transition tag to be able to match offers, though.

Not true, Kiwi took a big paycut
Players can do a restructure that pays them less.

Matt, wouldn't it be reduced a bunch if by restructuring with more years? Not that I believe we should necessarily do that if he's good to go, just using a hypothetical.
Obviously what Ron said is true,
Big Blue '56 : 11/20/2015 4:30 pm : link
but if they had parted ways with Kiwi, would Cruz command more on the open market than an older Kiwi would have?
The Prince and JPP
TMS : 11/20/2015 4:47 pm : link
maybe. The other two are already retired, Why repeat the Beason mistake with Cruz. Lets move on and let them as well. This front office has to learn the game after all this time. Don't they ? MO.

You can do anything you like with a contract as long as both parties agree. Reduce salary outright, turn salary into bonus, extend, whatever. I think Cruz will agree to a reduction for next year based on the last two years of being paid and not playing.
Beason will probably be gone
Rjanyg : 11/20/2015 4:50 pm : link
I hope JPP is brought back and I hope that both sides can make it reasonable. The Giants were very patient with JPP and one can only hope that he appreciates that when negotiating his new deal.

Prince is a good player but can't stay healthy. Again, he has been paid a good amount of money for the amount of playing time he has actually had. Hopefully he signs a reasonable contract and stays.

The biggest question mark is Cruz. He is a fan favorite. He came out of nowhere and helped lead this team to a superbowl. I think if he shows he is healthy prior to next season his contract goes unchanged.
And the Giants have the leverage with Cruz
BillT : 11/20/2015 4:51 pm : link
No one is going to pay him with what's happened in the last two years. He will take a reduction for next year to show he deserves to play out the remainder of his contract. That's a better deal than he can get if released.
Beason and Beatty will be gone
David B. : 11/20/2015 4:54 pm : link
Unless Beatty thinks some other team is going to pay him starting OLT money -- which doesn't seem likely. He could be back if he wants reserve OL money.

JPP -- depends on his performance this year. Cruz -- incentive based contract.

Prince -- re sign (i.e. normally). He's still quite young and quite good.

my predicitions
giantfan2000 : 11/20/2015 5:05 pm : link
Cruz cut
Beason retires
Prince leaves Giants

JPP stays with another tag
I love these articles
The Turk : 11/20/2015 5:05 pm : link
and everyone's comments that "I want him back at a fair price." A fair price by definition is what the market will bear for the player. the only way to determine that is to allow the player to test the market. when a player tests the market he may like his deal and take it without offering a right to match. To avoid having the player test the market his notion of what he is worth must match the Giants notion of the same.

Beason gets offered the vet minimum (if anything)
Cruz will get an offer that is almost wholly incentive based
Prince will get a big number but with an easy out if the injuries continue and he can't play
JPP - I have to think that either (a) there is at least the parameters of a deal in place or (b) they have already parted ways with him
My opinion on Beatty..
LakeGeorgeGiant : 11/20/2015 5:14 pm : link
is starting to shift. I'm beginning to wonder if the better plan would be to release him and sign a younger tackle like Glenn.

Putting Beatty at RT at this age coming off an injury feels like putting a square peg into a round hole. Glenn might be a better fit at RT. We can afford it (maybe 6 mil?), and the cash we save on Beatty will cover a large chunk of the first year salary.

Thoughts?
Sorry..
LakeGeorgeGiant : 11/20/2015 5:16 pm : link
I thought Beatty was a part of this discussion as well.
Beatty's future depends on a variety of variables...
Milton : 11/20/2015 5:37 pm : link
How concerned are they about his history of injuries?
How do they feel about Beatty when he is healthy?
After a full season with Flowers at left tackle, where do they feel his future is?
The wrong answer on any of those questions could mean Beatty is history.
Lots of off season decisions
Patrick77 : 11/20/2015 5:41 pm : link

I'm more concerned about Ayers, Brinkley, and Merriweather honestly. I would like to see those 3 kept on 1-2 year deals.

Prince and JPP would be nice to keep at a fair price.
Cruz would be good to keep at a reduced price and if he is healthy.
I hope Beatty is kept as well.

Beason needs to go. Kuhn can be picked up whenever he is needed IMO. Randle who knows.

Unfortunately Beatty, Prince, JPP, Cruz, and Beason all could be big gambles based on injuries.
Does Cruz really have a role for the Giants...?
BamaBlue : 11/20/2015 5:42 pm : link
Cruz is a slot receiver that has not shown the durability to be used in that role. Do we expect him to be able to be more durable after back-to-back injury plagued years? I'm afraid this is very similar to Steve Smith's position a few years ago.

Ayers is an interesting one. He is OK, but not great. He hasn't been healthy, and he is 30. They might not sign him.

Merriweather will probably be gone depending on FA and the health of Berhe and Jackson.

Brinkley will return I think.

Not sure how the two are related, but when they do this, you have to assume the player gets a little more than they think they would on the open market. Otherwise they would refuse and force the team to cut them
And to add to the above
ron mexico : 11/20/2015 5:52 pm : link
The agents can obviously figure out how much dead cap space they would create with a cut and factor that in
Predictions (Really Guesses)
Trainmaster : 11/20/2015 6:20 pm : link
Beason - cut/retire
Prince - transition tag (I like that suggestion)
Cruz - agrees to a restructure with incentives
JPP - franchise tagged again
Beatty - cut or restructure (RT pay)
I have to say...
Milton : 11/20/2015 6:47 pm : link
It's disappointing to me how easily some of you are ready to give up on Cruz. He was instrumental in a Super Bowl run and has done nothing but represent this team well. I think some of you were spoiled by the fact that the team went from Steve Smith to Victor Cruz without skipping a beat, so you think anybody can play the slot at a high level with Eli at QB. It's not the case.

We've been fortunate to have had two guys in a row who are Pro Bowl quality slot receivers. It takes a special receiver to excel at the slot, because there's more to it than just physical talent, you need to be smart and you need to put your ego aside and be all about Eli. Smith was able to do this. So was Cruz. Not everyone can.

I'm rooting hard for Cruz to return from injury. He won't be easy to replace if he can't. And as Reese said, the money situation will work itself out once Cruz has put his injuries in the rearview mirror.
I took from Reese's comments
ron mexico : 11/20/2015 6:50 pm : link
that they would need to do something with the contract as its currently structured
.....
BrettNYG10 : 11/20/2015 6:55 pm : link
The number of receivers that came back and performed well from the surgery Cruz had was low - combine that with another injury and him nearing 30 and it's hard to be optimistic about him going forward. I'd still like to see him back on a small deal to see if he has anything left, though,
Given that we would have 3.8 mil of dead cap by cutting him
ron mexico : 11/20/2015 7:04 pm : link
I'm guessing they will settle in the 3-5 per year range as opposed to the 7.75 per he is due now
To me Prince
Ginny Poo : 11/20/2015 7:14 pm : link
is just another guy out there. Never impressed and always hurt with pussy injuries. Living on being a first round selection but should have gone in the third round. JPP I make an aggressive push for, The other two guys.......say bye bye in the car!
It does appear they're slowly trying to phase Jennings out
JonC : 11/20/2015 7:43 pm : link
but it's not a finished process.

I can tell you the Giants debated David Wilson or Cordy Glenn in the war room, and picked the "explosive weapon". They had Shady envy that offeason. Glenn in, Beatty out would not shock me in the least.

I echo Milton's view regarding Cruz
JonC : 11/20/2015 7:44 pm : link
I suspect it's mostly frustrated fans that want him gone, but fully expect NYG will do all they can to reach a compromise for him to remain in blue.
