Victor Cruz faces an uncertain future with the Giants after being placed on injured reserve with a calf injury that required surgery this week. But he's not the only Giants player whose status for 2016 is in doubt. The Giants have big decisions to make not only on Cruz, but also on three other players whose futures are complicated by injury issues: defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, cornerback Prince Amukamara and linebacker Jon Beason. |
Cruz is gone if he doesn't accept a major cut, not restructure, a pay cut.
Prince can't play ten games a year. Offer a reasonable increase, nothing too substantial.
JPP should again be offered a reasonable contract that won't break the bank. A lot still depends how he performs over the next 6 games.
Still need to draft each of those positions to keep the pipeline flowing and hedge injuries.
JPP at a fair price? YES.
Cruz? Depends on his condition.
The man is older, and is injury prone.
Cruz - either a substantial pay cut with incentives, or he needs to be released.
I think the Giants will work hard on JPP and Prince to take reasonable, fair contracts.
Prince? I'd keep him even at his current pay.
Cruz? If he doesn't take a pay cut then adios and thanks for the memories.
JPP? He isn't worth $10 million. No way in hell. He's better than what they had before he came back, but that's not saying much. I really would not break the bank for him.
Hopefully they will be able to work out deals with Cruz and Prince that are incentive-based.
Not true, Kiwi took a big paycut
Players can do a restructure that pays them less.
Matt, wouldn't it be reduced a bunch if by restructuring with more years? Not that I believe we should necessarily do that if he's good to go, just using a hypothetical.

Cruz is not that easy to do what is being suggested. They would have to cut him, leaving him open to the FA market, in order to give him a significant pay cut and/or incentive laden deal. Otherwise, it is a re-structuring of his current deal which I don't think can actually reduce the total value by more than a certain percentage. Salary can be reduced, but converted to a bonus, which would be amortized, likely over a longer period.

You can do anything you like with a contract as long as both parties agree. Reduce salary outright, turn salary into bonus, extend, whatever. I think Cruz will agree to a reduction for next year based on the last two years of being paid and not playing.
Prince is a good player but can't stay healthy. Again, he has been paid a good amount of money for the amount of playing time he has actually had. Hopefully he signs a reasonable contract and stays.
The biggest question mark is Cruz. He is a fan favorite. He came out of nowhere and helped lead this team to a superbowl. I think if he shows he is healthy prior to next season his contract goes unchanged.
JPP -- depends on his performance this year. Cruz -- incentive based contract.
Prince -- re sign (i.e. normally). He's still quite young and quite good.
Beason retires
Prince leaves Giants
JPP stays with another tag
Beason gets offered the vet minimum (if anything)
Cruz will get an offer that is almost wholly incentive based
Prince will get a big number but with an easy out if the injuries continue and he can't play
JPP - I have to think that either (a) there is at least the parameters of a deal in place or (b) they have already parted ways with him
Putting Beatty at RT at this age coming off an injury feels like putting a square peg into a round hole. Glenn might be a better fit at RT. We can afford it (maybe 6 mil?), and the cash we save on Beatty will cover a large chunk of the first year salary.
Thoughts?
How do they feel about Beatty when he is healthy?
After a full season with Flowers at left tackle, where do they feel his future is?
The wrong answer on any of those questions could mean Beatty is history.
I'm more concerned about Ayers, Brinkley, and Merriweather honestly. I would like to see those 3 kept on 1-2 year deals.
Prince and JPP would be nice to keep at a fair price.
Cruz would be good to keep at a reduced price and if he is healthy.
I hope Beatty is kept as well.
Beason needs to go. Kuhn can be picked up whenever he is needed IMO. Randle who knows.
Unfortunately Beatty, Prince, JPP, Cruz, and Beason all could be big gambles based on injuries.

Ayers is an interesting one. He is OK, but not great. He hasn't been healthy, and he is 30. They might not sign him.
Merriweather will probably be gone depending on FA and the health of Berhe and Jackson.
Brinkley will return I think.
Not sure how the two are related, but when they do this, you have to assume the player gets a little more than they think they would on the open market. Otherwise they would refuse and force the team to cut them
Prince - transition tag (I like that suggestion)
Cruz - agrees to a restructure with incentives
JPP - franchise tagged again
Beatty - cut or restructure (RT pay)
We've been fortunate to have had two guys in a row who are Pro Bowl quality slot receivers. It takes a special receiver to excel at the slot, because there's more to it than just physical talent, you need to be smart and you need to put your ego aside and be all about Eli. Smith was able to do this. So was Cruz. Not everyone can.
I'm rooting hard for Cruz to return from injury. He won't be easy to replace if he can't. And as Reese said, the money situation will work itself out once Cruz has put his injuries in the rearview mirror.
I can tell you the Giants debated David Wilson or Cordy Glenn in the war room, and picked the "explosive weapon". They had Shady envy that offeason. Glenn in, Beatty out would not shock me in the least.

...and what a talented, young offensive line we would have.
I'm liking this idea a lot.
