NFT: Knicks Chat:Kristaps Porzingis is a colossus

dk in TX : 11/22/2015 9:47 am
It was great to see the Knicks grind out a victory last night with Carmelo Anthony in a serious foul trouble. KP stood like a colossus and intimidated the Houston Rockets in the paint. I live in Houston and boy, that felt gooood!! Thank you Phil Jackson.

I came across this KP's draft video. Enjoy.

Didn't the character Colossus in the X-Men cartoon
Mike from SI : 11/22/2015 11:41 pm : link
have a Russian background story? I'd be willing to use that as his nickname.
Mudiay
Anakim : 11/22/2015 11:47 pm : link
Emmanuel Mudiay posted 17 points, two rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one block vs. the Warriors, but he shot only 6-of-21 from the field and turned the ball over three times.
Just how awful has Mudiay's shooting been? He's on pace to be the first qualifying player since 1960 to shoot worse than 34 percent from the field while taking at least 13 attempts per game. He's clinging to late-round value in 8-cat leagues, but is basically unusable in 9-cat thanks to his 4.4 turnovers per game.

Could Lance Thomas be on his way to developing into our 3&D player? These guys often come "out of no where" and develop a little later.

Similar size/athletic profile to Carroll (a big 3&D). Carroll didnt really start to be a 3 point shooter in earnest until his mid/late 20s. Thomas is 27 and just added a 3 point shot. Obviously played really great man up D on a top tier SG last night.

Too optimistic? Or could he be at a launching point of his career? Even a lesser Carroll would be really valuable. Im sure fans in MEM, UTAH, DEN, and HOU were scratching thier heads that Carroll turned into a max player.

Yes! Been saying this for a bit now. His defense has been great, and he can guard the 2 - 4. If he can get that awkward looking shot to go in on a consistent basis, he should definitely stay as part of the rotation.

I'm not saying he wasn't being honest but his choosing to say it publically so soon after the draft is fairly unorthodox and since we know he isn't stupid I can't help but think he believed there was a benefit in doing so.

I think this is exactly what he did and Porzingulous said as much. Makes a lot of sense as a motivational tool, or because he knew better and wanted to get everyone even more worried so when he played well, people would be in even more shock.

Porzingis laughed off the comment.

Thats what Phil does to get guys to work hard, the 7-foot-3 rookie told reporters Wednesday. That fired me up. Im not Shawn Bradley.

The way I took it was that Phil was lowering expectations on him so that it gave him time to develop. The fact that Porzingis already understands Phil and used that as motivation is just the icing on the cake.
I never imagined that Porzingis would be playing this well,

The Knicks have two great players. Porzingis was the best player on the floor against the Rockets.

I don't know how high his ceiling is.

I just know that injuries are all that can stop him from reaching it.
I would trade the OKC Win
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/23/2015 8:16 am : link
to blow out the Heat and KP goes for a triple double against Whiteside.
I'm not trying to get ahead of myself

but you see each skill he brings to the table after 14 games and project him mastering those skills in a couple of years and put them all together, it is mind boggling

Jose Calderon played with Pau as a kid in Spain. Says KP is better than young Pau.

Jose Calderon, however, remembers Gasol as a skinny teenager when they first played together with Spains national team. Calderon also sees similarities but admits that right now, Kristaps is better.

If Im not mistaken it took Pau a little bit longer to get those big numbers, Calderon added. But also remember, Pau was the Rookie of the Year. Lets see where we are at the end of the year. But this is a good start.

ROY is a matter of competition
Deej : 11/23/2015 10:00 am : link
Porz would be the front runner if he was doing this in the 2014-15 season. But KAT has bee playing at an all star level. KP's win shares per 48 minutes, probably my favorite advanced stat, is .149. That's better than the rookie year WS48 of 16 of the last 18 rookies of the year (Blake .152, Paul .178). KAT is .173, which is allstar production.

watch out for KP to be voted in as an East starter. Last year the good people of Latvia threw their support behind one of their countrymen, a relative nobody named Zemgus Girgensons. They propelled him to first place in the fan voting with 1.6 million votes. What if they do it again this year? The Eastern conf forwards last season were LeBron (1.47mm votes), Pau (974k), and Melo (647k).

Could we have two Knicks starting in the ASG?

I'm all in on the good people of Latvia. They've given us the gift of basketball hope. We should build infinity NATO bases there to deter Russia from fucking around.
Whiteside's production in Miami
Deej : 11/23/2015 10:26 am : link
is beyond allstar. I like him coming out of college (Im always a sucker for a flier on a high upside big). But this is unbelievable.

KP and Whiteside shouldnt directly match up much. Bosh should cover KP, as Miami isnt going to want to draw Whiteside so far from the basket.

KP might get the start. Unfortunately, I don't think Melo will, though he'll probably be on the team. I could see the starting frontcourt being Drummond, KP and James based purely on voting.
Speaking of Whiteside...
manh george : 11/23/2015 10:46 am : link
what a remarkable bounce he has had.

How often in the history of the NBA has a player gone from this:

Quote:
In November 2013, Whiteside signed with Al Mouttahed Tripoli of the Lebanese Basketball League. He was released in April 2014. The next month, he joined the Jiangsu Tongxi of China, before leaving them in June after 17 games.

On September 25, 2014, Whiteside signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. However, he was later waived by the Grizzlies on October 22, 2014. On October 30, 2014, he was reacquired by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Two days later, his rights were traded to the Iowa Energy. He officially joined the Energy on November 14, 2014. On November 19, he re-signed with the Grizzlies. However, he was waived again the next day. On November 22, he re-joined Iowa.
...

to what he is showing now--15 points, 11 rebounds, nearly 5 blocks per game?
He's a very unique story
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/23/2015 10:49 am : link
but what you hear out of Miami is that the reason he was available is that he was an attitude problem, which contributed to him washing out of a few places.

NBA teams usually hang on to legit 7-footers that have his athletic ability. Javale McGee got tons of chances.

It looks like he's cleaned himself up.
Yeah that
Deej : 11/23/2015 10:54 am : link
Or PEDs.
if he keeps this up
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 11/23/2015 11:04 am : link

Literally zero chance Drummond will start over Melo in the all star game....

Drummond is having a great start to the year but he plays in Detroit and is getting zero exposure..

Detroit has ZERO national games...he is not nearly as popular as Melo...

The end of games possessions should be high pick and roll/pop between Melo and KP every time...

If the big sinks Melo has a wide open jumper...

If the big plays it agressive he has KP for a wide open jumper...
What would be really murderous with KP

is a guard who can drive and kick. Because you cant close out on him AND he can put the ball on the floor. Hope Grant gets his shit together soon. Shooting aside, his finishing has gone to hell.

Im really at a loss as to how high his ceiling is.

and the only reason i didnt think the Knicks would draft Porzingis was because he was said to be so much of a project...I thought there was no way with Carmelo signed that Phil would take a project...

I remember when Eric first mentioned Porzingis i thought there is no chance and when i first watched his DX video i thought Bargnani clone because it said he would be weak defensively...

Whne the pick happened i was surprised because he was supposed to be such a project but the more i watched of his full games of his euro games you saw the glimpses...

I am ecstatic that i was wrong about him...

Draft
Deej : 11/23/2015 1:48 pm : link
I saw a top 3, and they went 1-2-3. After that I had KP in a group with Hezonja, Mudiay and Winslow. Of those wanted Mudiay but wasnt overwhelmingly in favor of one over any of the others.
If the season ended today and there was no lottery
Deej : 11/23/2015 1:54 pm : link
Sixers would draft 1st, 4th, 17th, and 25th.

Simmons + Jamal Murray/Kris Dunn? And what if Embiid comes back? Added to Okafor, Noel, Saric, Covington etc.

I was afraid Russell would fall to the Knicks and i wanted nothing to do with him...

Okafor i was 50-50 on, i thought he would struggle more offensively than he has because his game is back to the basket and i did not think he would be able to back his way down as easy as he did in college plus i thought his defense would be crap....

It is the only way for them to rebuild...They are never going to get a Free agent to sign with them so they have to rebuild through the draft..

It sucks for their fans but they are doing what they have to...

It's not Des Moines, Iowa. The other major sports teams in that major city attract free agents just fine, but that's probably because they're run like a professional outfit and don't encourage quit.

they may have to overpay a bit and would have no shot at some players. But they could have gone bargain shopping like we did. They dont even try though.

I really hope it blows up in their face. I hope the Lakers get the #3 pick, Philly slides to 4 and their player kind of busts. I hope they get just good enough to mostly be out of the running for the top of the draft in future seasons.
