NFT: Knicks Chat:Kristaps Porzingis is a colossus

dk in TX : 11/22/2015 9:47 am
It was great to see the Knicks grind out a victory last night with Carmelo Anthony in a serious foul trouble. KP stood like a colossus and intimidated the Houston Rockets in the paint. I live in Houston and boy, that felt gooood!! Thank you Phil Jackson.

I came across this KP's draft video. Enjoy.

Yeah, well Knicks fans feel that pain, and it's a hard pain. Stephen Curry was drafted one slot ahead of the Knicks.

but I could see a few of them wanting to play with Porzingis and the Knicks. They are a lot better, fun to watch, and I think JP is a player to build around. What position should the Knicks look to upgrade in the offseason ? Would love to see another scorer (and better defender) to complement Melo and eventually replace him.
Agree on SAS!

Yeah he would still go one if the draft was today, KP though would move up from four that it certain. The Lakers are the team that will have the biggest regrets.

Take a losing/bad team and transform them into a winner all by himself. Even Jordan couldn't do that. Those that did?

Russell, Alcindor, Magic, Bird.

Short list.

There were people on the Lakers that wanted KP and he was the pick for a while. They they cooled on him. There is a lot of 2nd guessing lot here not just on KP, but on 2 or 3 other players they should have taken. They are not happy with Russell.

By the people saying KP would go #1 overall? By non-stop talk of KP with very, very little national coverage of Towns?

#4
DanMetroMan : 11/22/2015 11:48 am : link
story on ESPN was Porzingis monster game. Towns put up 28 and 14 with 4 blocks in his second career game and I didn't hear anyone going nuts. Towns has 11 or more rebounds 8 times already this year. Most people on here realize I'm a massive KP guy so I don't feel the need to defend him but Towns looks like a franchise player, I'd take him over Wiggins and Irving (previous recent #1's), obviously over Bennett, Davis is obviously a historically amazing talent.

I just never expected this out of him, especially as a rookie. Porzingis was compared to Bargnani a lot, I thought this was interesting...

Bargnani: 2 games of 13+ rebounds (528 games)
Porzingis: 4 games of 13+ rebounds (14 games)

DanMetroMan : 11/22/2015 11:54 am : link
line is GM's likely were scared off by past euro busts and shame on them. Watch KP in a single interview and you could see this kid is closer to an American player (fluent english) with a huge motor vs. some soft Bargnani. His personality is closer to Dirk than these Euro losers.
I enjoyed watching KP play center last night.
Ira : 11/22/2015 11:55 am : link
Ultimately, I think that will be his position, once he gets stronger. Then it will be more interesting to compare him with Towns. Okafor is clearly not in this competition.

Not to say it wouldn't have happened anyway but I wonder if Phil's genius in voicing the possibility of he being similar to Sean Bradley has anything to do with it coming so early?

At the time that comment seem to really get under KP's skin and Phil Jackson has a history of using the media in motivating players.

I actually think Phil is just brutally honest. I don't think he was making the Bradley comp as an insult. IIRC, he was just saying that freakishly tall skinny guys like Porzingis might have trouble with the physical aspect of the NBA because of the leverage disadvantage they'll always have to deal with against shorter/stronger guys.

That was a real concern with KP. But I think the beauty of Phil is that he will straight up say "this is what worries me about him" instead of beating around the bush. I think it's possible a guy like KP took those concerns to heart and made sure to put an emphasis on being tougher.
At least the Knicks are a fun team to watch again

I'm not saying he wasn't being honest but his choosing to say it publically so soon after the draft is fairly unorthodox and since we know he isn't stupid I can't help but think he believed there was a benefit in doing so.

KG could play PG on offense and could guard slow PGs like Calderon on defense.

KP is ridiculously unique himself and there are definitely similarities between him and KG. I'd agree that he is more similar to KG than he is to Dirk.

It's a small sample size for both guys, but KAT is at 16.0 pts 10.4 reb 2.4 blk with KP at 13.2, 8.8 and 1.5. Can't deny KAT is the goods. That said, KP is getting more publicity because of the large market vs. small market deal. Doesn't matter in the end - both great picks.

I don't see anyone who is a great comp. Dirk at the same age could easily go coast to coast off the dribble. Dirk also had more handle, less of a run/jump athlete. I think KP is one of the hardest players to compare others to in the history of the sport.

I'm not saying they are equivalent but to use your comparison I am saying he reminds me more of a Ralph Sampson with range than a Garnett with more range. Plus the game was very different when Sampson played and the threes weren't really even part of the game when he entered the league. To be fair and accent that point he only attempted four total 3-pointers his rookie season.

What I love about Porzingis is that he is such an all-around talent that the fans/media all fell in love with his game even when he was shooting 38% from the field and like 20% from 3 before the last week.

He's at 43/31 right now

Bargs is 44/36 for his career
Raef was 47/36 for his career
Dirk is 48/38 for his career

I wonder what kind of percentages KP will have in his prime.

Other than it being a different era with regards to the three point shot who does he remind you of?

Maybe it was just me because I watched Sampson a lot when he was in college and as a pro but I see much more similarities between he and KP than a lot of other comparisons. Hopefully KP will avoid the injuries that took there toll on Sampson

Strange how NBA Draft evaluations are so often wrong. The perception was this was a 'soft or weak Top 5' class. Now it turns out there could be two franchise chips in play. Towns and 'Zinger are having impact on the floor out of the gate and both should only get better at their age.

If Ralph was coming up today, I'll bet he would shoot threes
Greg from LI : 11/22/2015 1:43 pm : link
35 years ago, big men just didn't do that. Ralph had a great stroke. If he had worked at developing a long range game, he probably could have done it. He could do almost anything.....except stay healthy.
KAT has an easier job for a rookie
Phil in LA : 11/22/2015 1:46 pm : link
he's playing the 5. I've seen a lot more C's compile good numbers as rookies than I have 4's, who play all around half-court, and don't have the offense running through them.

Bill Cartwight had a terrific rookie season because they ran the offense through him. The Knicks are not running the O through KP, and he's still be spectacular, which is really unusual.

Btw, you'd still have to take KAT first overall just because of a more certain floor.
Wont take anything from KAT
Deej : 11/22/2015 1:58 pm : link
I'd take him #1. But you can make the argument for Porzingis. And this is it: There is a decent chance that his jumper is undefendable. People bitch about fundamentals today (stupidly IMO). What's really going on to me is that players are bigger, faster, and better than ever. The defenses are So fucking good. A good defense can shut down just about anyone. Except some guys who have elite elements to their game -- elite post, shooting, or slashing skills.

KP is potentially one of those elite shooters. The guy launches 3's from like 11-12 feet up. Look at some of the pull ups he did last night. Those are not tough guards -- they're unguardable. And his defense is looking like it could be special.

That's where he may have an advantage on KAT. Also, and I love KAT, but he's a bit of a weirdo. Fun guy, but also has imaginary friends. KP has that steeliness that so many studs have.
Sampson could never be a post player...
manh george : 11/22/2015 2:07 pm : link
or inside defender. He played at 7'4" 230 or so and could never bulk up.

KP will get to a solid 250-260, easy. And he will be able to score in so many ways from the post that Sampson could not. And defend inside against full-sized centers.

The thing with upside vs. Towns is that it is really impossible to tell. I think a pretty good case can be made that KP's ceiling is higher. He is an incredible learner with an incredible attitude, and is displaying maturity at 20 that none of us could have imagined. He will have many ways to score that Towns can't match. That stroke is already there, too, he just needed to get his legs. And KP will be a go-to player at the end of games that a pure center cannot be. Will this offset Towns' very high skills as a pure center? I have no idea, but the possibility is certainly there.

An extremely athletic 7'3" player who will ultimately have superior knowledge of the game and a world-class stroke will have no one to compare to in modern BB history. Comparisons are useless.
The last time there was a player like KP was...never.
Sampson was b/f my time
Deej : 11/22/2015 2:10 pm : link
but wouldnt there be a difference between the need for bulk then vs. now? Many fewer bulky centers to guard.

manh george : 11/22/2015 2:30 pm : link
Let's ask Moses Malone. There were lots of bulky center back then. They just weren't typically that athletic. But they pushed Sampson around when he went inside.

One other thing with KP's potential impact:

Consider how much better the Knicks will be at the end of games if KP is the one who needs to be double teamed, leaving Melo one-on-one with ample space between them, so switching won't work.

There was always talk that Melo, even at his best, needed another star to take the pressure off him. They may already have him, maybe not for now, but soon.

In terms of Phil's Sean Bradley comment, I think it's too early to dismiss that from the discussion. We haven't yet seen teams decide to take KP seriously and get seriously physical with him. It's a long season.

What is his career average for scoring? Has to be less than 10 per game I would think and at this stage of his career it is expected he might be considerably less than his career average.

Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 11/22/2015 8:26 pm : link
super tall skinny guys like Bradley can struggle with some of the more powerful guys they face who have a serious leverage advantage on them.

It's a possible issue that KP will have to deal with, although he seems to be showing outstanding hustle and toughness with his rebounding.

and Lopez is about six year younger, has a career of 8.2 and has average about 10.78 the past three.

Glad to see it though and your post points to more evidence the Knicks were better off moving Chandler.

I actually like Lopez and I think it's because I really don't expect
PhiPsi125 : 11/22/2015 8:36 pm : link
much from him. He's a good player. He'll have games where he's on and games where he's off, but for the most part I view him as a positive player. Plus, I love it when he beats the heck out of the other team's mascot. It's stuff like that that make it seem like it's a loose locker room. If we can get these rotations worked out, I think we might have something here.
KP should keep working on that hook shot
blueblood : 11/22/2015 8:39 pm : link
it would be a serious weapon if he could develop a "sky hook"
I don't think there's an apt comp
Phil in LA : 11/22/2015 8:40 pm : link
He's longer than almost every F ever, and the proper comps might be for someone like Magic Johnson, who was a freakish size for a PG, or something like that. Of the 7'3" guys in NBA history, none were doing what KP is doing, and like Magic he might turn out to be just a one time freak rather than a progenitor.

I agree. I post about a week or two ago that he needs to watch tapes of Kareem and try and perfect a Sky Hook. With his height it would be all but impossible to defend.

For that matter he should pay Kareem to work with him this offseason.
Why does he need to pay Kareem?
Phil in LA : 11/22/2015 8:44 pm : link
His second hook last night was a sky hook, and that other night he was doing Hakeem's dream shake? The guy just watches tape and mimics moves.

You don't think he could learn anything at all from talking and working with Kareem?

steve in ky : 11/22/2015 8:56 pm : link
I guess we will just have to agree to disagree whether arguably the best offensive center in leagues history who happens to be of similar height to KP could teach him anything or not.
That's not the discussion
Phil in LA : 11/22/2015 9:01 pm : link
we're discussing if there's any utility in paying another coach, when they've already tried that with Kareem and it didn't work. I'm sure there are things KP could learn from Kareem, who's lived llonger, but what's the need to do that since KP is already picking up the skyhook without any help from Kareem? Hakeem has been training guys up and getting some results, but he too, was more of a back to the basket 5 than a 4 which is what KP is. Willis Reed has been hanging around and he was a 4 who became a 5...
I simple don't see the downside
steve in ky : 11/22/2015 9:12 pm : link
of KP working with Kareem for a couple of weeks during the off season. If he doesn't gain anything it's not a big deal, if he learns anything that helps him grow as a player it is more than worth it.

I find it a little odd you seem to have such an aversion to even the idea of it. What could possibly be the downside to it?

Could Lance Thomas be on his way to developing into our 3&D player? These guys often come "out of no where" and develop a little later.

Similar size/athletic profile to Carroll (a big 3&D). Carroll didnt really start to be a 3 point shooter in earnest until his mid/late 20s. Thomas is 27 and just added a 3 point shot. Obviously played really great man up D on a top tier SG last night.

Too optimistic? Or could he be at a launching point of his career? Even a lesser Carroll would be really valuable. Im sure fans in MEM, UTAH, DEN, and HOU were scratching thier heads that Carroll turned into a max player.

not a 5. Kareem was a back to the basket offensive guy, KP is face up. He's already learning post stuff from the staff they have. He's using hook shots (an by the way, Phil Jackson had one), the Hakeem dream shake and is working on the Dirk stuff. And he's not really just like any one of them. I see no point to putting him with Kareem just because they're both tall.

Just how awful has Mudiay's shooting been? He's on pace to be the first qualifying player since 1960 to shoot worse than 34 percent from the field while taking at least 13 attempts per game. He's clinging to late-round value in 8-cat leagues, but is basically unusable in 9-cat thanks to his 4.4 turnovers per game.

Yes! Been saying this for a bit now. His defense has been great, and he can guard the 2 - 4. If he can get that awkward looking shot to go in on a consistent basis, he should definitely stay as part of the rotation.

Jose Calderon, however, remembers Gasol as a skinny teenager when they first played together with Spains national team. Calderon also sees similarities but admits that right now, Kristaps is better.

If Im not mistaken it took Pau a little bit longer to get those big numbers, Calderon added. But also remember, Pau was the Rookie of the Year. Lets see where we are at the end of the year. But this is a good start.

That's better than the rookie year WS48 of 16 of the last 18 rookies of the year (Blake .152, Paul .178). KAT is .173, which is allstar production.

manh george : 11/23/2015 10:46 am : link
what a remarkable bounce he has had.

How often in the history of the NBA has a player gone from this:

Quote:
In November 2013, Whiteside signed with Al Mouttahed Tripoli of the Lebanese Basketball League. He was released in April 2014. The next month, he joined the Jiangsu Tongxi of China, before leaving them in June after 17 games.

On September 25, 2014, Whiteside signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. However, he was later waived by the Grizzlies on October 22, 2014. On October 30, 2014, he was reacquired by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Two days later, his rights were traded to the Iowa Energy. He officially joined the Energy on November 14, 2014. On November 19, he re-signed with the Grizzlies. However, he was waived again the next day. On November 22, he re-joined Iowa.
...

to what he is showing now--15 points, 11 rebounds, nearly 5 blocks per game?
He's a very unique story
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/23/2015 10:49 am : link
but what you hear out of Miami is that the reason he was available is that he was an attitude problem, which contributed to him washing out of a few places.

It looks like he's cleaned himself up.

Okafor i was 50-50 on, i thought he would struggle more offensively than he has because his game is back to the basket and i did not think he would be able to back his way down as easy as he did in college plus i thought his defense would be crap....

It's not Des Moines, Iowa. The other major sports teams in that major city attract free agents just fine, but that's probably because they're run like a professional outfit and don't encourage quit.
