Syracuse Football - fires Head Coach Scott Shafer

B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:06 am
It had to be done. And here we are again. From the mishandling of the Dungey injury to the drug failures to the sideline penalties to the horrific in game playcalling and decisions...it goes on and on. I hope they finally pony up the dough for a name instead of someone else's re-treads.

Doug Marrone is available

For once
JonC : 11/23/2015 11:15 am : link
it would be a legit boost to the program if they spent on a head coach. They need to boost its profile in order to attract better talent, especially on defense where they're always too small, etc. I'd like to see Syracuse become a force, especially since Army is unlikely to do it.

Can't trust Marrone, he's demonstrated that.
B - agree with all that you said.
Tom in NY : 11/23/2015 11:17 am : link
Sad season for SU, they just never seemed to develop any type of defensive consistency.

What are your thoughts on Pat Rhule?

Would he consider SU and upgrade from Temple?
I doubt Rhule
MookGiants : 11/23/2015 11:20 am : link
would take Syracuse, it's a step up but not a big enough one to leave.
Rhule has a pretty good thing
B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:26 am : link
going on at Temple. SU would need to open up the war chest.

I'd consider Ed Orgeron if he were up for another shot at a HC gig. He's the best recruiter in the country and is already familiar with Syracuse. Just not sure if he's HC material at this point.

It'll be interesting for sure. Word is they've had a search committee working for the last four weeks and have already contacted quite a few candidates via representation.

Shafer was a nice guy but not a good game manager and for some reason he plowed thru QBs like no other. All this stuff, plus Injuries killed any chance he had at success here.

They simply cannot hire another coordinator unless it's a big name who can recruit. Otherwise, it's time to nut up and pay. It'll be interesting how this new AD handles things. But he's already batting 1.000 with this firing.
They are getting their ACC check
HomerJones45 : 11/23/2015 11:26 am : link
to play the Washington Generals against the pay-for-play schools in the ACC, what do they care.
What a dumb comment
B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:29 am : link
They care because they have a crumbling Dome in desperate need of repair and revamping, there's an eventual goal of possibly building a new stadium, they should be making a hell of a lot more money through attendance and merchandising, and now that their "Olympic" sports programs are becoming national powerhouses it's well time to up the game with more revenue from what should be your #1 driver.

Hell, they won TWO National Championships this weekend.

But carry on with your smartass, ill-informed bullshit.
I had
dorgan : 11/23/2015 11:29 am : link
always hoped that Coughlin would return to SU when he retired.

That ship has sailed.
Love for them to do well.
kicker : 11/23/2015 11:31 am : link
The ACC needs more schools competing.

Do you guys have the $$$ for a big time coach? Wish Rutgers would do the same and fire Flood. Flood makes Shafer look like BIll Walsh IMO. Both schools need to do better as the area is so loaded with talent that even the 2nd tier kids are good enough to build upon.

They have the money. But there is a faction within the University that doesn't want to pony up. Ultra-elitist book worms.

Rod Carey, Matt Campbell and Dino Babers have been discussed. Even Matt Patricia. It's wide open. Problem is, there are a ton of openings out there.

Certainly congratulations are in order for those two national championships, and I mean that sincerely. I don't think Men's Cross Country is going to pay the bills, and neither are Olympic sports.

SU is getting the ACC dough as long as CATV continues to pay based on total subscribers and not on rating, which may change in the next contract, or the Tobacco Road schools decide they are carrying the load and want more of the money. So, the TV money needs to either support the school which is not a public institution, or pay for a new venue unless there are loads of alumni who are going to dig deep. They aren't building a new ballpark or hiring a big name coach with sales of orange merch. There is only so much money available.

So, they are going to do what they have to within their means which is to try and find an assistant from a pay-for-play school or a small school coach who wants to try for the big time.
Patricia..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/23/2015 11:43 am : link
seems like a good fit, but that is without any knowledge I have about his recruiting or his work ethic.

He is a young, energetic guy who might be able to breathe life into the program.

I get it and you're not wrong. But winning teams make a hell of a lot more money than teams that have only had three winning seasons since 2001. I'm fine with a MAC guy coming in who had success at N. Illinois or Toledo. But it cannot be another three year experiment churned through the meat grinder.

And the alumni with the money that you refer to experienced some of the best SU football in the 80's and 90's - so they want that back. And the University cannot afford to be part of the ACC, have TV cameras show no one in the stands, and get pushed to the dregs of 12 and 12:30p starts on MSG 2 every week.
And regarding money - let's not forget
B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:55 am : link
that the University raised over $1 BILLION recently as part of a fund raising campaign. The school is run like a corporation and they definitely have the capability to spend $3-$5 million/year on a coach.

Yeah, heaven forbid they not spend on a football coach and instead on professors and students. What do they think this is, a university?
A couple other names for you...
B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:56 am : link
Mike Sanford from ND and Scott Frost from Oregon.

I believe SU's AD Mark Coyle knows Sanford from Boise State.
It costs about $56,000/year
B in ALB : 11/23/2015 11:58 am : link
to attend the school. Professors are well paid, don't you worry smart guy.
Frost would be an interesting hire
JonC : 11/23/2015 11:59 am : link
Young dude, played the game at a high level, played in the NFL, has coached both sides of the LOS, top notch program immersion.

Would think he's in line to replace Helfrich if things go sideways, though.
and yet Mike London coaches on
Greg from LI : 11/23/2015 12:01 pm : link

I spoke to Terrel Hunt
BIG FRED 1973 : 11/23/2015 12:06 pm : link

I would like history..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/23/2015 12:13 pm : link
to have a guy who quit playing (Scott Frost) to have a much better career than the jackass who quit coaching a team like Marrone.

Problem with Sanford is if he had success he'd bolt quickly. Especially if he has success and ND opens up down the road.

I guess you can't worry about that but Syracuse would be nothing but a pit stop for him if he were successful
How about The Hat?

A buyout of LSU coach Les Miles' contract is "a very good possibility," a high-ranking source tells @schadjoe

I can't imagine
MookGiants : 11/23/2015 12:25 pm : link
Miles would want to coach at Syracuse. He's 62 and likely could just go into a TV role quickly and retire.

An interested observer. I was scouted by SU in high school but didn't make the cut for scholarship offer, unfortunately. A 5'9 195 lb strong safety faced an uphill climb.

Bruce Feldman, Fox Sports college football guy. He's one of the few national guys I pay attention to.
S.U. is potentially an excellent opportunity for a good young coach.
Phil in Joisey : 11/23/2015 1:25 pm : link
This program has nowhere to go but up. A bright, young Head Coach who can relate to 18-year-old recruits could help put Syracuse back on the football map in a few short years.
Was at the SU-NC State game Sunday here in Raleigh

Frost or Babers

are the 2 i would like. Eddie Orgeron in some capacity would be a homerun too.
Game was on Saturday obviously and not Sunday.

You can't blame Randy for running the score up. He had very little experience playing with a lead while at Maryland.
Bo Pellini is looking for a job
Mike in NY : 11/23/2015 4:01 pm : link
Or they could always hire the DC from Ohio State who was the interim head coach before Urban Meyer was hired and had a bowl game.
Pelini is under contract at

Youngstown State. SU would have to buy that out, right? Plus, pay Bo and Shafers last year.
